1.5m isn't very impressive for a AAA title, especially after trying to appeal to everyone. A deep, complex single-player RPG like Skyrim sold far more than that, so maybe they should have tried to appeal to the RPG audience afterall. But instead of using Skyrim as an example, they looked to Call of Duty.
Yeah, and you know *
sighs* the thing about it is that fans were desperately trying to tell them Don't Do It.
But EA wants that market, or at least some of it. I don't blame them for wanting some of the C.O.D. market, but fans were trying to tell them that C.O.D. market just doesn't love ME like that.
Granted, there are quite a few that cross over and enjoy both games, but for the most part C.O.D. players just aren't interested in Mass Effect. They like what they have for alot of different reasons.
EA did so much to try and target that market, it was almost painful to watch. MP was really unnecessary. It turned out to be a nice addition to ME, imo, but they put alot of time and resources into it---trying to pique the interest of the C.O.D. audience. And to put it in the last game of a triology that was always SP...Really? Now you want to do that? Right now? Right now?
Vega, who I like well enough, was included to appeal to that market. A spot which really should have been for a ME2 character.
Marketing was trying to publicly downplay any RPG elements in the game, "we don't want to go down the RPG rabbit hole. There's a war on!" Fight, fight. Shoot, shoot.
The so-called early demo of ME3 went to Battlefield customers because EA thought they could go through a back door to sneak up on C.O.D. players.
They spent a fortune in marketing hyping up the game. Perhaps they figured they could buy their success. Totally forgetting the power of word of mouth. And the fact that gamers memories aren't as short as you think.
Meanwhile, fans were standing back watching in something akin to horror as BW/EA went galloping with a giddy delirium over a cliff. The whole time fans were yelling, "Stop! It's a trap!" But no. We don't know what we're talking about. So, okay. Fine. Go barreling off the cliff.
Instead of cultivating their base,( the ones that buy their books; comics; action figures; shirts....Swag) they tried to twist themselves into something they weren't to get the attention of a group that doesn't want them.
EA, no means no. They way you've been stalking the C.O.D. fanbase, they're gonna end up slapping a restraining order on you.
And it seems they pretty much figured their core base would swallow anything they served up. Took them for granted. Really. They forgot which side their bread is buttered on.
I would love to see Mass Effect succesful. If I had things my way, everyone would try Mass Effect because I think it's that cool.
But be who you are. There is a strong market for quality, Action/RPG's. A market that is being ignored because all publishers want to see is FPS, or Gears of War.
Like when Twilight was so popular. Everybody went chasing after friggin' vampires. Vampires! Everywhere!
Enough with the identity crisis. Embrace your inner nerd. There's alot of us out here....facepalming right now.
