Why is there so much hostility toward a "happy" ending?

This is amazing XD and it made me laugh out loud at work

*sighs* I really want to say "I knew it" in the end...and I want a "let's have pizza" End...You read this, bioware? It's not so complicated to please the likes of me! And I'll even buy a DLC or whatever if you do it right this time, promised!

But but but... I romanced Tali, I can't have pizza with her :( It's still a depressing ending!

She can have dextro pizza. Just don't try sharing any of it. ;)

Butbutbut...maybe they'll release a clarification DLC where you can see your Shepard making a special QUARIAN pizza! just for her (and liquifies it  for these emergency induction ports) Yummy! You see, a happy end can always work!

they say it was to give the ending a twist... SO DOES NOT COUNT!!!!
Pretty much throughout the entire game, all the characters were dropping hints about you dying. I think Bioware wanted us to be prepared so we didnt die of heart attacks. When a saw the little hints I was like 'challenge accepted' then i got to the end and... 'challenge soooo denied'... sorry trying not to rant. i was hoping for an ending similar to ME2 where your choices actually affect the end. Freakin DA:O had a looot better ending and I chose to die then, but i didnt have to. the ending was just one giant troll wihtout any closure

I just don't see how any outcome can be a happy ending.

Sure they could do something like show the aftermath of the ending in which shepard and tali bugger off but in order to reach such an end you'll be required to destroy the geth and edi, i love legion and i sucked when he died so it's a decision that would play hard on me.

shepard has synthetic parts keeping him alive, if he didnt die, theres a strong chance edi and the geth dont

I think it's just a posturing... "oh, I'm so mature I can appreciate the unhappy ending, it's realistic and the others who don't like it are crybaby whiners blah blah" ...

But the thing is, this is a game. A product from a gaming company, entertainment industry. I play these kind of games to have fun. To be the hero who overcomes all obstacles, beats all the enemies and gets the chick. It's really that simple for me. Playing a game to consistently get a kick in the groin everytime ? Not my idea of fun...
I can't fathom how some people at BW thought that would great for a game....

I agree. There is enough to be depressed about in life.

it can't be because there is no meaning behind  hit -  sense act of  just killing off the main  character.

The ending is completely deviod  and  hollow.    Any tragic ending will  have a meaning behind it - take Glory for example. Mass Effect ending was character assassination... Shepard  some one who dispite all odds  defied and made his or her own way.  Not only accepted but submitted to  The Catalyst in all three 3 endings.   It even fails as a tragec ending because that to happen Shepard would have to  defy the Catalyst and lose.. I.E  Chrono Trigger  - And the future refused to change.

I also agree with this.

I don't think you quite understand what i'm saying. A happy ending could be possible but only through destroying the reapers. But when if you do that it wouldn't feel like a happy ending to me since legion gave it's life for nothing and edi's gone. Shepard might get the girl but it doesn't fill me with a great sense of accomplishment as a perfect happy ending would entail the geth and edi surviving along with shepard getting the girl which is unlikely.

What I don't get is the notion that it's bad to have a 'perfect' version available for those who want one, as well as an amazingly disastrous one. It's a bit pathetic to have several shades of 'grey', ambiguous, maudlin for the endings, rather than the full gamut we could have.

After all, nothing spells 'replay value' more than the chance to go for the full 'medal ceremony' ending with 100% completion required - or to take the 'road less travelled', and sabotage everything to deliberately wind up with an ending where the Reapers conquer the entire galaxy. That was really fun to do in ME2, and there's so much potential for a bigger version of that in ME3 that to not have that scope feels likea massive waste.

We're definitely of a similar mind on this. Couldn't agree more, particularly on your second paragraph.

Because obnoxious 10th graders who write terrible poetry with depressing themes automatically trumps writers who make well-thought-out narratives and include elements of hope.

Nihilism isn't profoundly deep and meaningful. Only obnoxious 10th graders think it is, because it's more depressing than their own lives are.

Well said, I was going in wanting a wide array of endings watching whole civilizations fight for survival agains the greatest enemy in the galaxy. I was expecting them to rewrite the definition of epic to ME3 what I got was a convuluted mess riddled with more holes than you can count. as it stands now there is little to no replay value.

Because many people are neckbeard toting basement dwellers who need a daily supply of grim dark or they will esplode!

But in reality most probably cant tell the difference between a bad dark ending, and a good ending.
Dark does not equal good.

Lately, everyone is trying to be deep and stuff. In movies, in games, in books. Remember all these Superhero movies, where it became consensus that the superhero needs to have serious issues? Not being perfect. More like the broken hero who struggles with his own power? Having problems like everyone else. Screw that i say. I take a guy like Superman over any whiny "superhero" anyday. Or take Thor from the recent Thor movie. I loved his cocky attitude.

I love Disney Type happy endings :)
