But if I was given the chance? I'm torn between something snarky ("I need a drink and about eight lifetimes of shore leave"), exhausted ("just point me at the nearest bed"), apologetic ("oh, no, the geth.."), compassionate ("where's liara? who survived?")

I mean, you did win, sort of. Maybe.

If your squad asked you what happened, I guess you could say "Uh... we won? Maybe?"
I mean, you did win, sort of. Maybe.
Possibly.
Potentially.
Although maybe not.

Shepard: I think I just made out with your sister, Orianna.
<Miranda slaps Shepard>
Miranda: You're an ass. Now tell me what *really* happened.
Shepard: Short version, the Catalyst was a being of some sort. In the end, it gave me the choice of Controlling the Reapers, merging Organics and Reapers, or Destroying Sythethic life, including the Reapers and probably the mass relays. I picked the last option. Then I ended up here.
Miranda: You blew up the mass relays!? Shepard, are you *insane*?
Shepard: I didn't have a choice, Miranda. The Reapers had to be destroyed. I don't know what all the consequences were out here, so I need you to fill me in.
Miranda: Suffice it to say, the Reapers appeared to auto destruct. Then the relays started acting very strange. EDI came up with some *crazy* hypothesis about Synthetic annihilation being imminent, and as soon as the relays started going crazy, Joker took EDI, a few Geth, and everyone else on the Normandy and high-tailed it out of the system. If what you said about the relays is true, I don't know if, or where they made it.
Shepard: Wherever they went, I'm sure we'll see them again. Anyway, I suppose I should report to Admiral Hacket. I'm sure he'll want to debrief me.
Miranda: The Admiral can wait. The galaxy is safe. Orianna is safe. I think we can take a few moments and focus on us. I don't know if you've noticed, but we're the only ones here.
Shepard: You do realize I'm bleeding.
Miranda: Lucky for you, you picked the one girl who knows how to put you back together if you die.
Shepard: Good point. Unless you're hoping to do that mind control thing you mentioned before.
Miranda: Oh, I have the feeling I can already make you do whatever I want right now....
<fades to black>
<new scene>
Wrex: GARRUS, you've been looking through that scope for over an hour now. Did you find any sign of Shepard?
Garrus: Oh, I found him alright.
Wrex: Lemme see.
<Wrex pushes Garrus aside, looks through scope. Pauses, stunned. Looks back at Garrus.>
Garrus: What's the matter, Wrex? Krogan don't enjoy that kind of show?
Wrex: I just realized Shepard's kids are going to need someone to play with. I'm gonna go find Eve.
<insert other random interactions between various companions>

...so basically my answer to "Shepard, what happened" is "I just made out with your sister, Orianna". The rest is context.

Joker: "Wait, what?"
Shepard: "Organics will inevitably create-"
Joker: "No, I heard you Commander, but what about the Geth? They're synthetics and we just brokered peace between them and their creators. Yesterday. And then there's EDI, who I would litterally be shtupping the circuitry out of right now if it weren't for this damned war. Did you use any of these examples to counter his argument?"
Shepard: "I...I forgot."
Joker: "..."

If Liara asks (assuming they are reunited), he wouldn't need to say anything. He would let her read his memory/thoughts/emotions of what happened on the Citadel (and, assuming he had to track the Normandy down, in the time they have been separated fr). She is the only person my Shepard allows himself be completely open and vulnerable around. He would need support from someone who can understand the burden placed on his shoulders by being the one forced to make that decision.Bill Casey wrote...
What would you say?
Seriously. After the ending, say they found you alive laying in some rubble and said, "Shepard, what happened?"
What is your response to that?
As for anyone else, he'll put on a façade of confidence in front of them because they need him to be strong. If anyone else asks, he will say at most, "I did what had to be done. The war is over. It's time to rebuild." He won't speak another word about what happened for years to come, if ever.
That's what my canon Shepard would do, based on the motivations I made up for him early on.
