Instead of OMG DRAGON AGE PWNS OBLIVION IN THE FACE or OMG DRAGON AGE PWNS WOW!
(I still play WoW, I played and enjoyed Oblivion, and I've played and enjoyed many other games. Why are gamers so immature in thinking that a gamer can only play one game? Or *shock* one game at a time??? I can play DA:O save quit and log onto WoW to raid... or MW2 and kill stuff... But I digress...)

I've played nearly all of Bioware's games minus Jade Empire, and I thought it'd be interesting to rank Dragon Age in relation to Bioware's other work.

How does Dragon Age stack up compared to Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect?

Which RPG is your all time favorite and why? (Bioware games only, no games by any other developer) .

Personally it's a dead heat between Mass Effect and Dragon Age for me. I loved the sci-fi story line of ME , and the shooter-esque style gameplay was fun. Dragon Age has better characters and a much darker story, and a lot more possible endings.

What would make or break the tie is how Dragon Age: Origins will play into Dragon Age 2. If you can port your entire saved game from Origins into DA2 (Most likely) with all of the character decisions and epilogue choices, DAO will be incredible.  The lasting impact of quests, like Chant in the Deeps, or Dagna's storyline, etc etc can stretch all the way through the second game. (Not to mention the main quests, but can you imagine if a war gets called in DA2 or 3 because of your actions in DA:O?)

Anyhow I just wanted to divert from the OMG DA:O PWNS X GAME ! DA:O is a great game, so are a lot of other games. DA:O isn't perfect, there are gameplay elements, release bugs, storylines, and a few voice acting scenes "Who is that.... Grey Wardens.... (Groans and collapses) " AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!) that could have been better. Anyhow just wanted to see what other Bioware games the community has played and which is the Bioware community's favorite.

And now I'll leave you with ninjas! (They're everywhere)

:ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:

I liked Mass Effect the best, I think. I'm a bigger fan of sci-fi and shooting things with guns than I am of fantasy settings and semi-turn-based, select-target-and-let-the-spreadsheet-work combat, though there is a place in my heart for it.

I did like the storyline of Baldur's Gate 2 more than ME's, though. The whole soul thing is more interesting to me than saving the world or universe yet again in a game, and the main villain was cooler, and wasn't portrayed as someone that just wanted to kill everything because that's what he does. ME's universe is interesting, but it loses points for having mind-controlling aliens named Reapers.

A lot of gamers are males who cannot understand anything other than primitive either/or thinking. To them conversations are excercises in alpha-male dominance.

I have found something to like in nearly every game I've ever played. I play single-player games, MMOs, RPGs, FPSs, TES-style sandbox games, Bioware-style story-driven game...they all have something to offer that the others do not.

But to answer your question, so far I think DA:O may be my favorite amongst Bioware's catalog.

Favorite BioWare Game? Is this thread a joke? Any true RPG fan is going to say Baldur's Gate 2. Why? Because it is quite simply not only the best RPG but the best game ever.

PS: T remains the best

ME because of the conversation system, voiced PC, story and the not-fantasy setting although they still have to have magic stuck in there,

JE - Unique setting, clean fighting system, b\\the only decent inventory system Bioware ever stumbled across

KOTOR - First really useful implementation of the party interaction, good compromise combat system and great stroy.

BG2: Great story hobbled by the AD&D rule set but it did make my monk the baddest thing to walk the face of the planet.

BG: Last effort at an "open world", better gameplay than BG2 because, to me, the AD&D rule set is more interesting to play at the low to mid levels than the higher levels. Story isn't as good nor is character interaction whihc is why it is below BG2.

IWD: Pure combat crawler using a system where combat isn't that fun.

IWD2: More of the same.

NWN: Just not a very good game in the out of the box form. The 2 man party stunk outloud and for the love of god I can't even recall the story now which doesn't speak well of it.

By this comment alone I can tell that you're either gay (In no way is that an insult) or a fat chick.

I am so tired of this 'all men are a-holes' stereotype that women seem to cling to when they screw a guy over too many times and he finally leaves 'em. Am I saying that all men are good men? Nope. There's a lot of men who don't know how to respect a woman, and there's a lot of men out there who have no idea what a real man is. But in my experience, women cling to the 'all men are a-holes' simply because they can't hook the guy they want and have to settle for something less.

You will have to purchase a copy of the game to get a valid Neverwinter
Nights CD-Key. Of course, with this purchase you also get a lovely
Neverwinter Nights mapkin, a spiral-bound game manual, and three
plastic-coated aluminum-reinforced W1nd0z3 brand coasters.

because of installation instructions like these, the original neverwinter nights is still my favorite.

Dragon Age is really good....second best game ever made by BioWare...but it will never be nearly as good as KoTOR....BioWare just doesn't seem to have the capability of creating something that good again so I fear that KoTOR will remain the best game ever made for as long as this planet exists.

For me it is Dragon Age without a doubt. I have also played all of Bioware's games except Jade Empire and I find that Dragon Age was exactly what I hoped it would be. Yes I am not blind and have noticed that there are faults with it but as of yet I have not seen a game that is flawless so holding the developers to such a standard is unrealistic. Trade offs are an unavoidable part of the game industry, it may suck but it's fact.

Yes I also loved BG2 and still do. It is and always will be a classic in it's genre but now given the choice between the two I play Dragon Age. As for ME based on personal preferance it rates way down for me as I don't like the space\\futuristic setting so much. That said I still intend to give ME2 a chance but based on the above I do not believe it will topple Dragon Age for me no matter how innovative it is.

My top 3 Bioware games:
1. DA:O
2. BG 2
3. KoTOR.

Top 3 of all time:
1. Planescape: Torment
2. Dragon Age
3. Fallout 1

Mass Effect is still in its "shrink wrap" for me. =/  Never found the time to play it.

Gah, why make me do this?!?

I hate chosing.

BTB - for everyone who keeps brining up PST, that was a Black Isle game, not a Bioware game - though it used Bioware's Infinity Engine (just like Icewind Dale, also a Black Isle game - I miss Black Isle.)

Ok - I can only rank what I've played, so here goes -

1. Dragon Age Origins

2. Knights of the Old Republic

3. Mass Effect

4. Baldur's Gate 2 (w/Expansion)

5. Jade Empire

6. Baldur's Gate 1

7. Neverwinter Nights

It may be unfair to put BG1 above NWN since I finished the NWN campaign (though it took over 3 years and multiple tries to make myself play it all the way through) and I've never even gotten to Baldur's Gate in BG1. In fact, you drop beneath Jade Empire on my list and they are games I don't particularly like, I guess.

Jade Empire and BG2 are tough to rank one over the other, but BG2 wins due to having a party to control AND feeling more like the kind of CRPG I enjoy. Mass Effect and KotOR are hard to flip-flop as well, but let's just say I dislike the Star Wars franchise so the fact that I enjoyed KotOR as much as I did is a testament to that game's story.

And I agree Marlo.

People always get so wrapped up in the single game they are playing at the time and seem to put their manhood on the line for it.

WAR vs WOW was like that, same with the above BGII comments, or the Oblivion vs DA:O thread.

Anyhow never really ranked mine.

1: Dragon Age Origins--- No doubt to be beaten out by ME2 when it releases for its even DARKER storyline and shiny guns.
2. Mass Effect
3. KotOR
4. BGII

The degree of separation between number one and number four isn't all that great. More just within fractions of each other really and what mood I'm in on that particular day.

DA:O for it's ridiculous amount of possible endings and strong storyline.

Mass Effect for its weird harvester creatures from space and fun story line. With Jedi/Magic powers built in (Yipee!) and most of all its FPS-esque style gameplay that actually WORKED (Glares at Elder Scrolls). :alien:

KotOR for its early use of character interaction and its amazing use of the Star Wars setting.

BGII for being a fracking classic game that built the core of Bioware gameplay and influences their design process to this day.

Tough choice. Hard to rank them. I liked all. Would like to mention, that I also liked NWN2, but it's mostly by Obsidian, so it won't appear in my Bioware ranking. Same goes for KotOR2, which I felt was a bit unfinished when it hit the shelves anyway.

Note: All games on PC.

1) Dragon Age: Origins (played in English)

2) Mass Effect (played in English)

3) Jade Empire SE (I like martial arts! Well made gameplay, wonderful intriguing story) (German)

4) Neverwinter Nights (still love this for the great community mods) (German, English mods)

5) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (one of the best story twists ever) (German)

Concerning BG, BG2 I have to admit (shame on me), that I never completed BG so far after getting it in a value game pack. But I wanted to play it before starting BG2, so while BG2 is undoubtly a great game, I haven't seen it yet. I plan to change that, but with ME2 coming soon...

Usually the localizations are very good in Bioware games. But then again more often the English speakers tend to be even better, more carefully chosen, often more famous actors. I give Bioware a 10/10 for Flemeth for example. I am very, very happy, that since ME I get an uncut English original in Germany without the need of importing the game since Mass Effect. For that I love you Bioware guys. Don't ever change this policy again, please!

P.S.: Forgot to mention MDK 2, which was innovative and supposed to be great in it's time. But never played that one.

P.P.S.: IWD, IWD2 were actually from Black Isle Studios published by Interplay and even while playing in Forgotten Realms using Bioware's engine they are strictly speaking not developed by Bioware. Apart from that I didn't play them, especially while not even finished BG...

This actually but since i am a cyberpank type of guy Deus eX ranks higher than BG2 for me but only due to the setting alone. In terms of everything else a moded BG2 is a fearsome beast than cannot be toped by anything in the RPG land and arguably anything else.

Actually I would have to say the original NWN + expansions mostly because they kept me entertained for the longest time, I don't see DA having the same kind of potential since modding is harder now and persistant worlds isn't possible.

Still like BG1 best. I like the whole BG saga. But I appreciate the bewildering, scary freedom and journeying aspect of BG and TotSC more than I appreciate the technical refinements to BG2 and ToB. Then there is the experience ladder. BG2 got pretty bombastic in it's efforts to continue the climb. Doesn't do anything to me. Finally, I don't care anything at all for being spoon fed a "story" and being led along in a leash, even though I gather that is so precious for some. So BG2 doesn't score any points with me there either. I only recognizes that it frees development effort to be spent on other things.

Ask the question again, in a few years, when I've played more DA series games.

Way to read the title of the thread, champ.

1) Mass Effect - had its fair share of flaws, but I love science fiction more than anything. The universe is so fully-realized and the political tensions really stand out. Aesthetically this game really took me back to the glory days of 80s science fiction with neon lights and synthesizer music. Love it to death, just love it.
2) Dragon Age - because it took the BG formula, stripped out all the junk and beefed up the characters. I'm really surprised with this game, to be honest from all the marketing I thought this was going to be garbage. Get a new marketing team, Bioware/EA.
3) KOTOR - blah blah blah, everything else Bioware has made can be lumped in here, except for Jade Empire which I just really couldn't get into at all despite all the rave reviews.

When it comes to BG and BG2, sorry. It's mostly nostalgia driving those picks and while I enjoyed PNP AD&D, it was not good for computer games, though Bioware did an excellent job of adapting the rules accurately. I prefer Fallout 1 & 2 from that era.

BG2 hands down. I love DA:O but it misses a villain of the caliber of Jon Irenicus and has a too-obvious plot. Also BG2 has Minsc and Boo! I named my dog Minsc, but it wasn't the same

I really liked playing DA:O, it's an amazing game. And it's been quite some time since i saw such a quality RPG around to play on PC.

That said, the Baldur's Gate Series (I&II + expansions) still remain my all time favourite. In fact, i'm playing through it right now using a Mega MoD install. :)
