Hello folks :)

I'm not sure if this is because my game is broken or if it's just game mechanics so please accept my apologies if this should have gone into the Tech bit.

I've got the lovely Zevran being my trap expert.  This is my second character but I was a rogue myself first time around and I had traps as a skill.   At level 3, I was able to spot most traps and disarm most of them too.

I'm being a mage now and I'm relying on Zev to spot traps for me and he's also now at level 3.  I'm very fond of him but his trap skills are HOPELESS.  He can't see any of the ones I could (I can sort of remember where they were) and he can't disarm the ones he sees for toffee!!!

His Cunning is at 31 which I thought was plenty!

Is this my game or am I doing something wrong?  It's a bit annoying because it rather spoils my idea of him as a rakish, nimble-fingered daredevil and makes me think that he may really be a bumbling, butter-fingered fat-head.  *sighs*.

Any advice gratefully received.

The description on the trap skill is a bit misleading. It allow you to make traps and certain level of it extend the range of your trap detection ability IF you already have it. The ability to detect and disarm traps is under the talent lock picking skill that you can pick up in the talent pool. So as you level him up just have him select a level or two of lock picking talent.

Also cunning do affect your ability to detect traps and pick lock and higher score in it will allow you to detect higher level traps without as much investments in the that talent line.

This thread has a great explanation of this and other rogue skills:

Rank 2 and 4 of Traps increase detection range. The Deft hands tree will increase your ability to disarm traps and detect them. A 31 cunning would allow him to disable a trap/lock with a difficulty of 20. Every rank of the lock pick talent increases the cunning score by about +10.

Your first character had more than just the traps skill backing them up. You had to have had some ranks in the lockpick/traps rogue talent. Zevran starts off sucking wind in that department, but he can be a beast for doing damage.

Ah Haaaaaa!!! thank you so much!!! I understand now and have given him some training in lock-picking. I'll see if that sorts him out.
