Grown from the ashes of a previous project called Duranin, Songs of the North is a complete re-imagining, set in a modified setting and refined with all the lessons we learned from our prevous projects.

Songs of the North is about to launch in the coming months, and we are seeking roleplayers and DM storytellers like you to share in the adventure!

http://songsofthenorth.com/

What can I expect in Songs of the North?
SotN is a roleplaying persistent world where the focus is really on the player-characters themselves, their interactions with the world, and the choices they make. Our DMs shape and adapt story events based on what players choose to do, and we reward player initiative and exceptional roleplay above all else. Songs of the North has grown out of several different projects, taking the best ideas and philosophies from reach, and re-imagining them in a bold new world.

What's the setting of Songs in the North?
The setting is a fictional island in the Forgotten Realms, similar in size to real-world Ireland. This mist-covered land is both secluded and remote, surrounded by a powerful magical force called The Veil which shrouds it from the eyes of Gods and magi. Strange forces unknown to Faerun haunt it's dark forests and rocky shores.

What's progression like in Songs of the North?
Slow but steady. We want players to always feel like they are moving forward, but SotN is not a server where you will be epic level within a month. Players who fight enemies less often will find they earn bonus xp when they eventually do, as we have a "rest" system in place to narrow  the gap between players who can play all the time, and those that play infrequently.

What races are available in Songs of the North?
We have most of the standard races available, but in SotN we are willing to create new races as well based on exceptional roleplay and storytelling. If you really want to play that kobold, an excellent roleplayer will find this option actually open to them; keep in mind that we will not approve anything that does not fit the setting however, and that nonstandard races are meant to be rare and require a truly exceptional character story.

What classes are available in Songs of the North?
We have all standard classes and also include most of Kaedrin's PRC pack (a few classes from the PRC pack have been disabled for lore or gameplay reasons). Some classes are freely open for anyone to level in, but others, usually those with special lore or RP requirements, require approval first.

Core Philosophies of Songs of the North

Players can change the world.
You, yes you, can change the face of SotN forever, leaving a lasting mark upon the unique history of the server. Nothing is ever completely set in stone. Cities rise and fall, characters will live and die, and what was once the status quo yesterday may completely change overnight due to excellent roleplay and player initiative. Run for political office, start a mage tower to explore the mysteries of the multiverse, burn a village to the ground; Songs of the North is a dynamic world.

Adventure, adventure, adventure.
We're still recruiting DMs, but we plan to have a lot of them. DM-run events are the heart and soul of the Songs of the North experience. Scheduled events for the players with limited playtime, and ad-hoc events for those who like to hang around, there's something for everyone. Some events are one-off short adventures, others are long multi-event story arcs that react and change to player choices and actions.

Roleplayers before powerplayers. Now to be fair, "powergaming" is not always a dirty word. There's nothing wrong with having an effective character sheet, as long as it makes sense. But when the cards are down what matters most is the strength or your roleplaying ability, not your awesome AC. Which skills you choose to employ and how you choose to employ them will matter much more than how many you've managed to max out. Our staff and DMs know what they should be looking for in a player, and it's the exceptional roleplayers that will find the most reward.

Open communication between staff and players.
Nothing makes players grow disenfranchised with a server faster than the belief that their voice is not being heard, and that their opinions do not matter. Well, they do matter: a server cannot exist without it's players. You are the most important members of the community, and keeping players involved with the server is a lesson that should never be forgotten.

Are these the same developers that made the Myth Drannor world where you could only progress to level 6 without rp? I loved that world and miss my halfling bard from there. Will be looking foreward to what becomes of this project. :D

We are some of the same people from Myth Drannor (I was a DM there, and our lead scripter was a scripter for MD), but Myth Drannor was around for eight years and cycled many different developers in throughout the years!  I'm not sure the xp ever stoped at level 6 though, at least not during my time there; ours does not stop that low.

If you enjoyed MD, you will likely enjoy Songs of the North.  We have several old MD players among our community, and consider MD a good example of what a PW should be.

What happened with Duranin? You did a nice job designing that world. It's a shame it didn't survive.

Duranin didn't die, but it evolved.

Songs of the North is a reimagining of what Duranin was meant to be.  We've uncoupled the setting from the Forgotten Realms, have written an expansive new and original setting, and taken a hard look at our server philosophies and redesigned the PW based on player feedback and what worked and what did not.

Duranin lives on within Songs of the North (as do most of it's areas), but as a single contry in a vast new world.  We made such broad changes to the server, it was no longer the "same" server, and carrying on with the same name would have confused people.  Thus, Songs of the North was born!

I'm definitely interested once you get the site working again. I haven't RP-PWed since NWN and since the local PnP games have died out around here, I'm in need of a good game.

I must admit - I did so many things along with the other stuff I do in the place I usually do it in that I fear I broke the place. I apologize profusely.

Hey Kirin, I dunno if you remember that Obsidian Shore place *wink wink*, but I was a staffer there. I would be interested in trying out your server once you get it up and running!

Hey guys, the site is down right now due to the server box blowing up. I'm in the process of rebuilding it. Please bear with me!

I must say, Captain Victory, I am highly disappointed in you and your actions.  If I had a wooden ruler, I'd beat your forearms until you learned your lesson. :P

I had some problems with the server host recently (unfortunately the forums are on the same server, so they were down for a bit as well), but this has been resolved, and the server is back up. Even before our downtime, however, things were slowing down for our server, and Ariel and I have been discussing what we can do to address this problem.

We're entering a new phase of the server this Fall, and here's a list of changes and updates either already done or in the works:

EXPANDED DM STAFF

One of our primary problems has been a lack of DM staff to cover our player base. In a slow-progression PW like ours, DM activity is essential to the continued health of the playerbase and the server.

We have currently recruited several new DMs, but also invite you, the players, to apply for DMship as well. We'll train you to use the NWN2 toolset, worry not!

STATIC QUESTS

There will not be a ton of these as we don't want to emulate a "MMO" style of gameplay, but we plan to incorporate a few repeatable ones (that have level caps to prevent them from being used endlessly). This will first be implemented on current collectable quests, so that they offer a little XP in addition to their current item rewards.

IMPROVED ENEMY AI

In an attempt to improve the dull combat that often plagues NWN2, we are current testing TonyK's improved AI system with the server. Many enemies should react smarter, and prove a greater tactical challenge for players.

EXPANDED AREAS AND DUNGEONS

We've taken some feedback on the existing areas and content for the server and are reworking, adding, and expanding areas to offer more exploration and new challenges. This is an ongoing effort, and updates will continue throughout the season!

NEW RACES

In an effort to offer opportunities for roleplay, we are adding two new races: Shadowswyft and Lizardfolk. We will talk more about these races soon!

So in conclusion, no, Songs of the North isn't going anywhere at all. In fact, it's about to get a whole lot bigger! Stay tuned to our forums for more updates:  http://www.songsofthenorth.com

Unfortunatly we have moved on to a different project, due to a lack sustained player interest in this one.  Bioware's forums don't allow us to delete threads/posts.

We'll have details on the new project when we're ready to show it to the public.

Ahhh yes, I was on the forums before they went down reading about the new project (I'm Ebony on them). I'm guessing when your closer to release with the new project you will be putting up a forum/site for it?
