Is multiplayer worth the time?

Start on Bronze and work your way higher.
The store system is utter nonsense, but try the following: download Narida_L's multiplayer checklist (google it, search on this forum) and with your earnings buy nothing but recruit packs. When you have maxed out everything in the common section, move on to buying veteran packs for the uncommons. When you are done, move up to spectre packs. This system has saved the remains of my nervous system after trying to random unlock stuff.
You will find jerks, but you can always change lobbies.
About the dlc: the new maps are sniper heaver. (thanks Bioware:)
The most important thing, however, is to have a great time!

As an infiltrator you'll do really well. A good infiltrator can consistently outscore anyone else, IMO. In fact Infiltrator is the one class that I have no problem with being a low level on higher difficulties.
The only thing to keep in mind about the infiltrator is that, in multiplayer, there is no time dilation for your sniper rifle. I loved infiltrator in ME2, but I'm not a good enough sniper to do well without the time dilation. As a result, that's one class that I don't enjoy and haven't leveled up to 20 in multiplayer.
The other thing to remember about multiplayer is that the biggest asset you get in your single player campaign is that it multiplies your galactic readiness. The down side, though, is that your GR degrades by a percent or two every few hours. So if you go grind away in multiplayer to get a 100% GR rating at the start of your single player campaign, that advantage will evaporate completely by the time you need it in single player. So if your only reason for playing multiplayer is to boost your single player campaign, I'd wait until you're about to head in to the "no turning back" Cerberus headquarters mission.
But you should really give multiplayer an honest shot, just for the fun of it. The classes are varied enough that most players can find a character that really suits their strengths and interests. FWIW, playing the human engineer as a casting class is not too hard (once you get your level up a bit, which only takes a couple of games). Vanguard is also a lot of fun, especially on the lower levels where it's a LOT easier.
Have fun

If you have the salarian infiltrator, use the sequence: cloak/energy drain/shoot. Cloak gives you a damage boost, energy drain stops enemies in their tracks and strips/damages shields, shooting... well, it kills them. A headshot does very nicely.
The other infiltrators are nice too, but I just can't play them 'cause the SI is so good...

Interesting tip. I did recently unlock the SI (and promptly ignored it, cursing the fact that it wasn't an Asari Adept). I think my infiltrator class is a high enough level that I should be able to get cloak up to level 6 so I can cast a power while in it... I may give this a try, thanks

There are too many waves/the matches go for too long, I absolutely hate anything to do with random award equipment, and there's no story at all. What is the point?

lvl1 SI with a point each in energy drain and tactical cloak can keep up with the rest of a team on gold. I don't think you should try this right away, though...

I found multiplayer to be impossibly boring and more than a little frustrating.

well, the MP is mainly for shooter fans, that is true. I am an RPG/shooter kind of guy and find the MP extremely entertaining (to the sincere and often voiced dismay of my wife). Finding some people to play with just makes it even better.
A gold run with a random/mediocre team takes about 25 minutes. For a decent team gold takes about 20 minutes, silver around 16. An excellent team does them in about 5 minutes less. How is that too long?
The random award system is in fact horrible, can't argue with you there. The unlock list does help, though.
The point is to have fun, obviously. And the great thing about it is that if you don't enjoy it, you don't have to play!

I have just compelted the sp first time through, I am going to play another round and wanted to know if MP was worth trying, by trade I am not into MP much and last time had a rough experience with people being jerks since they always play MP. If its worth a try, I'd like to do it but really want to play with people who know what to do and do not expect much being my first play through. I also favor infiltrator so I like to hide and sneak up and snipe a headshot. I was also wondering if the dlc was worth getting that just came out, I have the collectors edition so I got most of the sp dlc already, any advice would help. I have the game on PS3.
Try MP, it's good fun, whathave you got to lose? I think I have the same issues as you - too many douchebags online that have no patience for people who actually work for a living/have family/do sports etc thus can't dedicate countless hours to multiplayer in order to become world class at it. I'm under no illusion as to my skill level, I usually play in the bronze matches and do ok and I find that 99% of the squads will help you out if you get into a spot of bother.

I, for one, do like the random award system too, it gives an element of surprise, like looting in Diablo 2.
I would say give it a try, maybe you'll enjoy it as I do.

What I love about the ME3 MP is the fact you can get by on powers alone if necessary (think adept, vanguard, quarian engineer), which means you don't have to shoot at all.
Also: don't worry too much about jerks. I play mostly in random games without friends, and so far it's been only in the demo that I came across one jerk. As long as you stick to Bronze difficulty until you truly get the hang of it, and don't head into Silver games below level 10, you should be just fine. Don't try gold before lvl 18 and at least one weapon upgraded to VII. (Of course there's always people who can do things earlier than this, but keep it as a rule, and you can bend it to your will)

The main problem with the multiplayer is the unlock system. To get the really good weapons, you need to be farming gold for ages, and even then that's not a guarantee. You need to be lucky too.

It also gave me the chance to experiment with the best powers, weapons etc to kill banshees, brutes, atlas' and other tougher enemies. I also like that I can test out different classes I haven't tried too often and I now have a better idea of which ones I will choose for my next single player game. (I normally stick with Vanguard but now I'm liking Adepts and Engineers as well).
I haven't found any jerks honestly. But then again I found turning off my headset allows me to play in peace and still gets the job done

Once I tried it, I didn't touch SP anymore.

If your only concern is that some players will be rude, this game has a more polite playerbase (usually) than other online shooters.

Some perks
1) If you promote a lot you will net a 75 PERMENANT war assets PER promotion under N7 spec ops in the alliance asset that carries through to every new game you start and is tied to your origin account. Getting lvls 1-20 is actually not difficult. If you do it enough times you can basically get the best ending everytime without having to get your GR past 50%
2.) It made me play the other classes/skill set. What I mean is I was able to lvl each class to 20 something I would not have done on SP. I found out that in addition to loving the adept, soldier, vanguard as I did in ME2 I also found I enjoyed the engineer and some of the new bonus powers.
3.) When you get to gold and are pugging a lot your gameplay improves. You'll learn to dodge better/more often, learn what skills work with your playstyle which don't, etc.
4.) Make some new friends (there are a lot of superb friendly non elitist people out there) that will talk the whole game about the crappy ending, chicks, etc. quite funny (although most do not talk I find).

I'll start off by saying yes, the multiplayer is completely worth it
The great thing about ME3 multiplayer is that at its nature it breeds cooperation. Now of course you're still going to find jerks or idiots that want to lone wolf it out. Most of the time though, they go down pretty quick and it's up to you if you want to rez them (I find they can still serve a purpose of being the resident "meat-shield" hehe). But I've already made quick work in making some friends and a good group of guys to pair up with whenever I'm online. I'd say give it a try and don't get frustrated the first couple of rounds seeing your tactics will be different in MP from when fighting in SP. I find it to be really rewarding and a lot of fun!
