Maybe it's a stupid question, but in the main games both of our heroes have been from Ferelden.
And although there are rumours that DA 3 might be taking place in Orlais, I do wonder if we play as another Fereldener.

Personally, I find the idea that the Blight caused various people from Ferelden to settle elsewhere to become adventureres and heroes pretty awesome.

But I wouldn't mind starting of as an Orlesian either, though I hope that you start with some sort of Origin if they do that, so you can learn a bit more about the culture and the country. (like they did for for the dwarves, elves, Couslands, ect.)

I think it would be amusing to have the DA3 protagonist being from Kirkwall, fleeing to Orlais after the annulment/uprising. Then the DA4 protagonist would be Orlesian, fleeing Orlais to (setting) in light of the DA3 ending.

Fleeing for everyone!

lol, this was what I was thinking
I kind of like the idea of being Ferelden though, it seems like all the great people were from Ferelden (Andraste was from Ferelden if I remember corectly)
but as long as we don't get an Orlesian accent,  I'd be fine with being from Orlais too

Interesting idea Quinnzel!  XD

Yes, Andraste was from Ferelden as well.
And one of the reasons I'm worried about playing an Orlesian is the accent, some of them are done well in the games. But I'm still worried about my character sounding like Isolde.... :pinched:

I don't really mind where he/she comes from though it would be funny if it was another Fereldener, if only so that everyone keeps calling them a Turnip LOL.

On a different note, I do think that playing a Ferelden character in Orlais could be... interesting.
Mostly because Alistair mentionedm in DA 2, that some Orlesian nobles wish to reclaim Ferelden, so yeah that might be interesting politically if you are a Fereldener and become more and more renowned as the game moves along.

No. I don't want another freaking Ferelden character. I'm tired of them at this point.

Personally speaking, I don't want my protagonist to be from Ferelden. DA:O and DA2 have both had Ferelden protagonists and I would like to see a different nationality get represented. Aside from my Elvish characters in DA:O and Hawke in DA2, I'm not really fond of having Ferelden protagonists (unless they're more along the lines of Maric, who is one of my favorite characters in the franchise). To be honest, I want an Orlesian protagonist (accent and all, because we all know that Bioware can do it without overpowering everyone when they try...Leliana for example), just like my favorite Warden is my custom DA:OA character. That's just my view though.

Oh I hope so.  Basically, it would increase the chance of Orlesians repeatedly referring to your character as a teyrrrrhhnip.

Some British accents are annoying rather than soothing as well.
I have faith that Bioware will find good French VA for the main characters, and I really hope the main character is Orlesian.

Although...

Yeah, and then they need to make a prequel game where you play as Andraste.  (Wait, you'd get gender locked.  Umm, you play as the person behind the scenes who was responsible for Andraste's success.  Yeah. B))

Personally, I think it'd be funny if the PC is ALWAYS from Ferelden (or thereabouts--Orzammar counts) just like the PC in the ES series is ALWAYS a prisoner at the beginning.

Ferelden--we may be dirt poor and covered in dog hair, but we're a nuclear generator for world-bestriding colossi.

I will be satisfied if the protagonist is Ferelden, but an Orlesian would also be awesome given that we haven't been exposed to that as much. In the end it all depends how BW wish to have the character's background in the game (do they want to have a link to Origin through the escape of many Fereldans during the blight, or do they want to explore something new and unique to Orlais? Both are cool)

Ferelden would be fine but someone from the Anderfels would be very interesting................

So long as they keep that Orlesian accent away from me I don't particularly care one way or the other. But if I could choose, I'd choose Neverra or Nevarra or however they say it because Cassandra is from there, the background is awesome, and they're right near Orlais and Kirkwall as well so it works on multiple levels.

Part of me wants an Orlesian protagonist (with a decent voice!) simply for diversity, but I'm warming up to the idea of the PC being another Ferelden. I also really like the idea of him/her being a refugee from Kirkwall.

I think the developers might lean towards making the protagonist Ferelden because it's a linking element in the games, plus it would be fun to see how a Ferelden in treated in Orlesian society. Also, they have to be really careful who they pick for the voices if the PC is Orlesian.

Yes please!

Anyone actually know where the turnip thing came from? "Dog lord" and "Oxman" both make sense, but turnip's still a mystery to me.

If we're gonna be an adventurer where the character is from is irrelevant.

But it purely depends on the type of character which we are playing.

'Radish' means radijsje, 'Turnip' means knolraap.
But yeah, both are vegetables and they look basically the same, so who really cares... (besides me obviously.  :P

that makes them exceptionally different. For instance, turnips are a well-known weapon in mario bros., whereas radishes are red and spicy.

... I think Rivainis should be radishes.

I imagine the use of turnip is just a slur meant to imply a sort of backwater, unsophisticated population. A barbarian culture thrived in the early days of Ferelden, and the current society is based on freeholds (such land ownership may imply a lot of farms). So too, the turnip is a common vegetable, often used to feed livestock, so it's not really viewed as a cash crop or something of incredible value (though it has many uses).

It could also be an indirect reference to the "just fell off the turnip truck" derogatory phrase.

That's smart - thank you. Image IPB Reminds me of DAII's "Worthless, am I? My father's farm supplied eggplant to half the South Reach!"
