he knows full well where Hawke and the other companions are, and i think they may still be with Hawke.....and i think he is trying to help his friends stay under cover because he doesnt trust the Seekers

he is a compulsive liar after all, and very loyal

Yep, the whole gang is probably in the hidden cellar entrance to Darktown with their ears pressed against the door stifling their giggles at Varric's version of the story.

Somehow...I can most certainly see a sarcastic Hawke sitting in the balcony and whispering sarcastic comments to himself the whole time.

Varric: After waves and waves of templars, Hawke and company (with the help of Orsino) successfully protected the heart of the Gallows from the templar assault.Posted Image

Cassandra: What happened next dwarf... Get to the part about the Knight-Commander.Posted Image

Varric: WAIT!! Wait!! In a surprising plot twist... Orsino was an insane blood mage the entire time! Posted Image

Cassandra: whAT!? Posted Image

Varric: Ya, it turns out that he was in league with that crazy necromancer back in Act II.Posted Image

Cassandra: Why haven't we got a report about this.Posted Image Wait... Act II? What do you mean Act II?Posted Image

Varric: Posted Image

Varric: Did I say Act II?Posted Image I mean right before the Qunari Invasion. Us dwarves and our silly ways of retelling a totally factual story...Posted Image

Cassandra: Whatever. Get back onto the story dwarf.Posted Image

Varric: So Orsino, being the insane blood mage he is, casted a spell to merge himself with all the dead bodies of the mages that died in the templar assault.Posted Image

Cassandra: Dead mages? I thought you said Hawke killed all the templars before they could reach them...Posted Image

Varric: Did I?Posted Image You know how battles with mages get. Fire, ice, lightning flying every which way. They must have died because of friendly fire...Posted Image

Cassandra: Back to the story.Posted Image

Varric: Right. The battle was verocious. Arrows, spells, and blood going everywhere! But in the end, Hawke and company was once again victorious in conquering the wicked foes that put themselves before him.Posted Image

Cassandra: Should we book a trip to Orlais to continue this interrogation? With how this story is progressing, i very much doubt you will finish it before we get there.Posted Image

Varric: Keep your britches on, i'm getting there. Posted Image
Varric: So, after the battle against the the insane Orsino, Hawke battled his way out into the courtyard, battling remaining squads of templars, demons, blood mages, and all sorts of crazy things!Posted Image

Cassandra: MEREDITH, dwarf!Posted Image

Varric: Right. So Meredith was waiting for us in the courtyard. BUT SHE TURNED INSANE AS WELL!!!Posted Image

Cassandra: .... Posted Image

Varric: It would seem that she made the Lyrium Idol from Act I into that big glowy sword i mentioned early. That and she now seemed to believe that the Maker started talking to her.

Cassandra: Act I? ....nevermindPosted Image
Cassandra: She thought the Maker was talking to her?Posted Image

Varric: Ya. I told you she went insane.Posted Image
Varric: So, she basically told us we were all blood mages or their thralls and attacked us! All through out the battle she was flying around...

Cassandra: Wait! Wait.... She was flying around?Posted Image

Varric: Well... maybe more like jumping, but those jumps were around 50+ feet high. Now that i think about it, i wonder how she didn't break any bones when she landed...Posted Image

Cassandra: ....flying?Posted Image

Varric: Oh, and she was bringing the statues around the courtyard to life too!Posted Image

Cassandra:............... really? Posted Image

Varric: Really.Posted Image
Varric: Would I ever lie to you?Posted Image

Cassandra: Posted Image

~MANY HOURS LATER~

Varric: Hawke sure is lucky to have such a wonderful dwarf friend like me, huh Bianca? Posted Image

Biance: .....
Varric: I didn't know how further i would drag out that story. Though, I'm surprised they bought it.Posted Image
Varric: Insane blood mage Orsino? Crazy flying Meredith? Posted Image
Varric: You would think the elite Chantry Seekers would be smarter than that. That just goes to show you how great of a storyteller i am. Posted Image

I would like to hear commentary on how much of DA2 was exaggerated from Varric (like, I can't be expected to remember how all the dungeons I visited in 7 years looked...) in DA3 if we meet Varric or have Cassandra talk about learning about Hawke.

This is the cynic in me talking, but I daresay we'll find out how much if DA2 was outright fabrication in future games :P

Well considering at the end how he says it, yes, it rather
obvious he knows where they are located.

Seeker: Please, if you know where the Champion is you must
tell me. They may be the only one who can stop this war before it begins.

Varric: Is that what this is all about… (LONG  PAUSE) in that case I wish I could help you.

Seeker: Just tell me one thing: is the Champion dead?

Varric: (Obviously being coy) Oh, I doubt that.

Oh, he knows, he certainly does know. I am pretty sure the
Seeker is aware of Varric knowing where they are all located but understands no
matter what she tries to do, he is not going to give up their location, so lets
him go instead.

LOL that would have been awesome! I hope that if they bring Varric back in DA3 as a cameo or a companion he'll make some sort of in joke about that. The Dragon Age team seem like the type of guys who like laughing at themselves, so it'll probably happen.

I agree that he may know more about Hawke's location that he lets on.  I'm not sure I buy into the fact that they're all together, though.  It'd be easier for Hawke blend in if he's not with a giant throng of people.

  • Sebastian: When you tell people about this part of our adventure, what are you going to say?
  • Varric: That depends entirely on the audience, Choir Boy.
  • Sebastian: You change the story to suit the listener?
  • Varric: Of course. All the bull**** in the world won't convince Hawke we rescued him if he finds us first.
