The Mass Effect 3 drama continues. Since the game launched last month, fans havevocally expressed their distaste for the endgame, claiming BioWare did not allow players to fully forge a unique destiny. Now, these users have scored a strong ally: the Better Business Bureau.Image IPBThe BBB thinks Mass Effect 3 represents false advertising. In a post to the firm's consumer news and opinion blog, BBB director of marketplace services Marjorie Stephens explained that BioWare directed a misleading advertising campaign for Mass Effect 3."The issue at stake here is, did BioWare falsely advertise?" she wrote. "Technically, yes, they did."Stephens made her claim by analyzing two of the game's much-distributed marketing tag-lines. The first line she examined was a promise that Mass Effect 3 players will be able to "Experience the beginning, middle, and end of an emotional story unlike any other, where the decisions you make completely[/i] shape your experience and outcome."Of the line, Stephens says BioWare did not deliver the player the ability to fully craft their own unique experience. "There is no indecision in that statement. It is an absolute," she said. The second marketing line Stephens referenced was, "Along the way, your choices drive powerful outcomes, including relationships with key characters, the fate of entire civilizations, and even radically different ending scenarios."Regarding this statement, Stephens says BioWare's messaging is very subjective. Reading this line, she claims, a player would have a difficult time reaching the conclusion that "the game's outcome is not 'wholly' determined by one's choices."Stephens ended her blog entry by noting companies have a responsibility to accurately craft their marketing messaging."The lesson to be learned here is companies should give careful consideration to how they word their advertisements. Otherwise, there could be detrimental effects, especially in the era of social media and online forums."Last week, BioWare announced the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a free piece of content headed to gamers this summer. The content aims to address fans' concerns regarding the Mass Effect 3 endgame by providing "greater context," but no new endings.

Of the line, Stephens says BioWare did not deliver the player the ability to fully craft their own unique experience

My question is, what does that even mean. The statement is very vague. What constitutes a unique experience? You can customize your armor, character, squad, choose which quest to do, choose how you respond, and depending on those choices determines what happens in the story. This isn't RPG Maker or Minecraft. I don't get what their definition of a unique experience is. The experience is no more unique than in ME1 or ME2.

As for the ending comments, they are right in that it is subjective. I mean, earth being saved or destroyed, and the outcome of the reapers, etc.. is pretty radical differences even if they are not portrayed that well in the cutscenes.

Regardless, this is the BBB being discussed. If Bioware offered to pay subscription fees, than they would end up having a AAA rating.

yep, knew this would happen. I guess all of us "entitled nerds" were right. I wouldn't have been so vocal throughout if they hadn't outright lied to us. There is "marketing hype and exaggerations" and then there is outright lies like "you won't just get ending A,B or C."

If they had been truthful or even obscure about the ending, I wouldn't have like it but I wouldn't have considered myself a "take back" person. I hated DA2 because of the broken promises and deviation from what worked in DAO, but I just let that game die on my shelf because that game was bad all the way through. The whole ME trilogy was awesome until the end. Why they would lie about the ending KNOWING we would find out is beyond me. Time to hire different PR people I guess.

What BS are you referring to?  TFA lists direct quotes from Bioware.  That they said these things prior to release are FACTS.  They are in the public record.

Please read articles before commenting that they are BS.

or

just add another link to some employees blog post that has absolutley no connection to BBB stance or case.

Um, the link is an interview with the exec producer of ME3, which talks specifically about the endings.  How is this hate mongering or a second-hand opinion?

This is not the stance of the BBB it is a consumer post.

regardless of how someone perceives that article, it IS on the BBB site and does point out that there were lies told us about the ending in the guise of "marketing".

Keep posting this kind of stuff until EAware fixes their product to match their claims of "no A,B,C" ending and "your choices matter".

If the rest of you don't like to see this kind of stuff...too bad. don't look at the thread then. we were lied to. period.

Hold the line!

"The issue at stake here is, did Bio Ware falsely advertise? Technically, yes, they did."

Even if it's a blog, it's just more bad press.

Now just a question of what Forbes might have to say about this. Certainly it is something that Ea BioWare needs to be aware of and perhaps go back into what they planned for the Extended Cut and make even more changes.

The author:

"Director of Communications at BBB of Northern Indiana. She oversees their annual Torch Award for Marketplace Trust and Student of Integrity award program, of which she finds deep satisfaction. Her goal is to educate as many people as possible regarding ID theft, scams, and both personal and professional ethics."

BBB could have a field-day with the misstatements.

The single proof BioWare/EA has to show to refute BBB's claim is to define Mass Effect 3 as a full game AND a set of DLC.
