I seriously can't see taking any bonus power but this one. 99% of all the projectile firing enemies use distruptor rounds or rapid fire weapons designed to take down shields (SMG's). 

So why would you take any other bonus power since this forgoes shields for extra boost to armor and thus damage resistence?

Because some powers are more useful. Fortification also slows power usage, and therfore is less useful for the Adepts and Engineers. I'd rather take an ammo power for one of those classes instead, as they don't get one by default.
