All of you who have profile pictures that are of a different gender than themselves, you're confusing me. I'm all for people defining their own gender identity and blazing their own glorious path, ambiguous to painfully and awkwardly obvious. Nevertheless, if you have a female profile picture, I'm going to assume you're a woman. If you have a male profile picture, the opposite. I feel comfortable in assuming that the gut reaction of other people is similar.

I could be completely wrong; a lone, confused sailor on an endless ocean of solitude.  Still, unless you want people to think you're of the opposite gender, you should probably match your profile picture to your kibbles and bits. If, however, you wish to confuse others and occupy the social space otherwise reserved for your opposite gender in an anonymous setting, proceed.

You're only confusing yourself.

Here's some basic guidelines about the internet or anything that uses it.
  • That's a man.
  • Even if it tells you it's a woman, treat it like a man.
  • If something someone said makes you angry or otherwise flustered, you're most likely getting trolled.
  • If you're not getting trolled, then you need to get over yourself.
  • If you can troll it, you probably should.

That's really one of the problems with internet, anonymity.
People act like a jerkoff simply because they can and most probably it's motivated by problems relating to themself than other people.

I agree with you, AgnosticTheocrat. People are entitled to do what they want of course, and maybe it doesn't strictly matter, but if you do have an avatar of the opposite gender you can't get annoyed when people continually refer to you as the wrong gender.

I personally find it fun to make the best representation of myself that I can using the character creator; it takes a lot more skill than just setting out to make "a pretty face." After all, the presets are generally attractive already.

I just go off into my own merry little world, put my fingers in my ears, and go "la la la" when it comes to knowing who is who. ^^

And I agree with wynne, I usually make a PC look something like me, or at least how i'd like to look if I had the looks ^^

Exactly, I did my best with the guy on the left here. You can check out the Pics of DAO players thread if you want to see how I did.

Just to be clear, I have no problem with anyone who is LGBT, nor do I want to minimize anyone's struggles with gender identity. I'm not trying to flame in that direction whatsoever. But as Wynne said, if I call you a she because of your profile picture, you can't get mad at me if you're a guy.

Agreed. I would have thought everyone did that.

There might be a few people that I know use the other gender for an avatar, but I'm not really concerned with remembering whether someone is doing that. If they've been around the previous off-topic forum long enough, then it's generally easier.

You'll only end up landing yourself in trouble that way.

And if they tell you otherwise, it's not going to be good enough until, as mentioned above, they've been around for quite some time.

You'll find that people who troll people over the internet are actually pretty docile and less likely to throw a fit if insulted in real life.

Unlike the insultee, who will immediatelly get butthurt and is the kind of person who causes problems for others in real life.

Not really.  Unless you're looking to cyber with someone, then you just need to be whacked over the head with a blunt object.

Otherwise, it's a pretty safer-than-sorry internet lesson.

Just use general unisex pronouns.
