Saving .UTC files with the toolset causes a crash

I've been trying to edit the ingame .utc files, to change the appearance and abilities of certain bosses, however whenever i try to save them the toolset freezes up and crashes, does anyone know a workaround for this? I've tried using a K-GFF editor, but it is out of date and corrupts the file.

Yes, could someone please supply an answer to this? I'm eager to find out how to fix it myself.

I ran across this same issue. Fingers crossed that it is fixed in the next toolset patch.

Although it could very well be a copy protection issue. The Shale and Warden's keep DLC files won't open in the Toolset and most of the source game files are Read Only.

Update: I have discovered a reasonable workaround, if you create and export a .utc file you make yourself, you can reopen it and copy-paste the fields from your edited boss .utc file and save them. Then you can rename the file and it seems to work. It's not perfect, but it seems to get the job done.
Here's a pic of my edited Zathrian(which I've been experimenting with)

Hmm, well I'm trying to edit a party character, you think this would work on that as well.

I'd assume so. Just create a new .utc and copypaste your edited party member utc fields into the new utc, change the name and save it. It should work properly. If it doesn't you could try editing the party member through a savegame file.

I tried it through the savegame, but I'm trying to change one of 'em into a hurlock, but his head morph messes it up, and you can't edit their head morphs in the save file sadly. =/

Aww damn, for a minute I thought it worked, then I noticed that he wasn't following me and that his icon didn't appear. This makes me sad.

Nope, it still doesn't work. I copied all the values from alistairs utc and put it to my new one, saved the new one and it still crashed. Doesn't work on party members still.

You'll need to edit the .utc files then, though Hurlocks and other npcs like the lady of the forest, don't use morphs, so you can leave that field empty. They use parts and their should be a part list which you can add in to your character npc so that the head will show up.

Editing the utc is no problem at all, it's saving it. -_- Why must there be little bugs like that which have to ruin everything you've anticipated lol.

You sure you can't save it? I was able to save my Zathrian npc by doing what i listed above. All i had to do was create a new .utc from scratch and copypaste the information of my edited utc over it. It removes the saving restriction that way.
Edit: sorry, didn't read the edited version, party members must still be glitchy, though this workaround works for the npcs.

I don't think I can do it with party members until they fix this issue, because apparently party members use certain references to make them actually count as party members. I mean, the first time I just copied all of alistairs values over from his utc to my new one except appearance and name. The second time I copied all of alistairs values over to the new one, including the name and appearance values and then it crashed when I saved that one. So I'm thinking it's gotta be something with the name value because I don't think it really has anything to do with the appearance.

But this pisses me off, mainly because I saw that someone was able to change the mabari dog pet to a wolf by changing the utc, I tried doing that myself but it crashed when I saved it. How in the world they did that, I have no idea. Maybe it's because of vista...ugh I hate this OS so much.

Yep, you're right. I just tried it myself, i cannot get it to save, even with a newly created .utc, it's strange that i can get Zahtrian to work though.

I think they purposely make these bugs just to make us mad, then they go and fix it in a patch and go "Hey sorry gaiz, we iz just be havin' shum fun!" >__>

Wait, what operating system are you running on? It might just be my rage, but possibly it's another problem that vista is causing. -sigh- I really just want to be able to edit these things without encountering errors, but there's just always got to be some rather coveniently placed bug to ruin your day.

Trust me, we don't put any bugs in just for fun, because they are not fun. We try to put the fun into the games instead. :)

With version 1.01 of the toolset, you have access to these creatures in the toolset directly, so you don't have to do messy editing of the .utc file with the GFF Editor. You can just open the up in the toolset, make the changes you want, and then export them from the toolset. Its a much cleaner and more user friendly process.

In house, we do very little editing with the GFF editor, it is used more frequently as a "viewer". I have filed a bug about the crash, but you should be able to do what you want without using the gff editor now anyway.

With the gff editor, we can have a compact single creature only utc file that we can put into mods. But with the innate creature editor, which, by the way, is no more user friendly than the GFF editor, does not allow something so simple. it FORCES you to make a new module to export the files.

Ugh, I don't know what made you think that this was a good process to keep in the toolset editor.
