An agreement of civility, and a little bit of planning ahead with regards to the Extended Cut.

I'll come straight out and say it.

Recent weeks have begun to nag at me. I've said some downright cruel things on this forum about Bioware and so have a lot of us. I don't want to get into whether or not we were justified. What happened, happened. All I know is that I feel guilty.

That doesn't suddenly mean that I like Mass Effect 3 any better (except Rannoch and Tuchanka), or that I'm gonna go back on things I said. All it means is that in hindsight I feel that we as a community didn't always keep it as civil as we like to pretend we did, and almost all of us are guilty of contributing to ridicule.

I don't want anyone to apologise.

I want us to try and make an agreement for the future.

The extended cut will hit in the summer, and as with all things game related, some will like it and some won't. A lot of us are preparing for not liking it, and I think a lot of us already know what we want to say if we don't.

But when the extended cut is out, that's it. That's Bioware's vision. At this point it's too early to say if it's good or bad. It will probably be good insofar as it fixes a specific part of the game, even though my objections to ME3 go beyond just the lack of an epilogue. But even if it turns out to be horrible, I feel like not much is won by coming back to this forum and raging about just how miserable of a company we think Bioware is, and what sellouts they are, and how we're never buying their products again and so forth.

There's people behind the screens at Bioware who get to hear all this, and it's never fun to be at the receiving end. Making people feel bad about the entertainment they create and insisting on letting them know how little you think of them is not useful, in any way, even if in your gut it initially feels like something you should do.

What I'd like to achieve here is to get those of us who are willing to put their names under this together to make an agreement beforehand on the following:

When the EC comes out, and it turns out it doesn't live up to what we expected, let's be brief and polite about it.

This forum doesn't need another month of rage and anger, another month of visible bitterness from Mike Gamble and Stanley Woo and whoever else. It's not necessary. Again, when the EC is out, that's it. That's what we're getting, and no amount of screaming and shouting and cursing is going to change that.

Let's agree here that we can be polite about it. That we can say "thank you, Bioware, but no thanks" and leave it at that.

At the same time, let's also hope it does turn out to be awesome.
