Finally got a copy in the mail today, and for a fellow artist (and everyone else at that) it's a really inspiring collection of various artworks from all three games. It's comprehensive too; covering race, vehicle, weapon and environment
design, plus more.
One of the things that got me involved in the Mass Effect series, aside from the characters, setting and plot as they all appear in the series, is the artwork that was whipped up to create the universe. I've seen only a few snippets so far, oddly enough, in the two small books that came with the ME2 and 3 special editions, so it's fantastic to have such a huge quantity of high-quality images. The character development sketches are amongst the best, along with the breathtaking environment paintings.
On a small, negative note, it does, for me at least, highlight a few issues I had with the third game where I felt BioWare had the talent to invest in a few cases that ultimately were missed. Tali's face is one of those, and after seeing the various concept sketches for the quarian face, it reinforces the disappointment there. However, this is only because everything else you see in the book---and subsequently the games---is so fantastic.
It's a real testament that the final quality images were translated into the game so well. So many games---and some movies---have great concept art that is ultimately reduced in quality (or not seen at all) in the final product. But this book is essentially like seeing painted and sketched versions of what you see in the Mass Effect games themselves.
For anyone who's really into the aesthetic of the series, as I'm sure most of you are, or you wouldn't be here, I can't reccomend getting the book enough.
