It is very important that you understand the following, if you haven't already.

To recognize whether your game crashed (or not) in your Xbox 360 (anytime, not specifically in the menu), just raise up the volume of your T.V. (or sound device) loud enough to hear the sound made by the Xbox when you bring up the Xbox Menu (Xbox button in the control). If you hear the sound made by such menu(the menu won't open because the game is loading), then your game hasn't crashed, just give it a few 10-20 seconds to finish loading, then you will see the Xbox 360 menu appear, and you can exit it, the game will be good to go again.

I realized this because every time the game didn't load I turned the console off, but then I decided to see if the Xbox Menu worked, and I heard the sound it made, waited over 10 seconds, and then the Xbox Menu popped out and the game finished loading. This technique will help you identify if the game is completely crashed and you will have to restart the Xbox, or just wait for it to respond. This works for any Xbox 360 game and App, just focus on that sound made by the Xbox Menu, but don't waste the shot, it can only be done once; If you open the menu, and the sound is made but you don't detect it, there's no way to know if the console will respond or not, just wait.

Doubts, or if I didn't make myself clear, please do post a reply!

UPDATE! This will not help you at all with the freeze/crash in the main menu due to the recent update, it will only help you detect bugs after opening doors, making sudden moves, or overall freezing (that isn't actually freezing, just load lag).
