There are some plot gaps that I never got.

About the first blight and the founding of the Grey Wardens. How the hell did the Grey Wardens figure out they needed to drink darkspawn blood (+ archdemon blood according to Riordan) to actually defeat it?
Also, how did they get archdemon blood in the first place during the first blight? And how did they figure it out?

And finally, how did they figure all this out? Trail and error with the Archdemon?

EDIT: Whoops wrong section, plz move to the story section plz Mods

I'd imagine that they killed the first Archdemon only to watch in horror as the nearest Darkspawn mutated into another Archdemon and figured things out from there. as for the blood, well it's not so much that they couldn't kill an Archdemon (or make it bleed) without being tainted, it's just that it wouldn't stay dead

I suppose they figured out that the taint can be "useful" because tainted people start rambling about being able to feel the darkspawn. Know your enemy and all that. Becoming tainted is pretty much unavoidable when fighting the darkspawn, so it would make sense if they accepted that and searched for a way to prolong the inevitable madness/death and get something useful out of the taint in the meantime.

How they figured out that they would require archdemon blood to keep the damn thing from headhopping to its minions, is a good question though. Despair?  An educated guess from mages well-versed in ancient arts?

I imagine the first Gray Wardens were sort of an accident. Tainted warriors who fought the taint in them and realized they could sense the darkspawn.

Killing the archdemon might well have been trial and error. They saw others fell it, realized its essence moved into the nearest tainted thing, and then found that it was destroyed when it entered them, at the cost of their own lives.
