I was able to run around with blade armor and a revenant and simply wreck with this guy using the exploding blades on silver... No real strategy just testing out his toughness/ damage potential. Even specced as a mid/ close range brawler I was nigh unstoppable- so I can imagine speccing into recharge speed and using a heavy shotgun as was intended would be quite destructive
The thing is that Batarians are meant to use snipers or shotguns (because of the extra ammo capacity and the % weight bonus)
I use the "sniper" shotgun, the N7 Crusader and it works like a charm.
I literally eat enemies like a vaccuum cleaner
Close range brawler is more meant for the Krogans, Batarians aren't really supposed to do that, and you will go down fast in Gold matches.
Remember, batarians have same health / shields as Turians, not Krogans.

That was my point- even specced for non-optimal combat, I still found blades to be awesome. Using a shotgun and speccing for recharge would obviously be the gold-setup. Still though- great class
It is, I'm getting used to playing as this class because it's very reliable.

Ballistic blades? Yes, you want them. Exploding? Yes you want that too since the dot will be negated by either you or teammembers killing (for a solo-run, I can see it being viable). The stagger from the explosion is golden and will give you time to set up for the next shot if they survive the blast. Yes, that is right, the explosion has a blast radius with AOE effect. Just try standing next to it as it goes off.
Blade Armor? Yes, that too since you will be competing with your other bat-soldier friends to get that heavy melee in on the Brute and the canniballz/cerberus will try to melee you.
Spec out of inf-nades (don't need them) and have the heavy melee give you that 20 sec increase ot weapon damage. This is like a mini-adrush and on AOE-weapons (Falcon/Stryker) it works absolute wonders.
Equip Falcon (Cryo for absolute lulzfest) and enjoy that incredibly hoarse voice.

This specc will not work on gold, melee a "boss" on gold? in your dreams.
Batarians have the shields of a Turian, not a krogan, they are not made for heavy melee out in the open.
combined with the fact that their heavy melee takes twice as long as other heavy melee makes your "specc heavy melee" skill on Gold absolutely useless.

good stuff, i might just promote and go with damage and bleed. Cuz first time i went with cone and explosion. I use the m-300 claymore with it and the blades pretty much gives me free headshots cuz of the stagger
with the bleed specc you wont even need to fire a shotgun

I can confirm they do.
Works on Geth (including pyro's) and Atlasses.

Now that's odd, but good I guess. (until they fix it). What about Ravagers, Brutes and Banshees?

Actually.. I use a very similar build on gold, and it works amazingly. See, Batarians have the most powerful Melee move in the entire game, and can one hit Phantoms on gold if you spec it, and have a heavy melee in your belt already. In fact, funny enough, it is possible using a melee specced Batarian, to Stun lock a Prime to death (Yes, I know. What the craP) by alternating between heavy melee and Blades+Explosions. The trick is, you just have to hit an enemy with a Blade to stagger em before going in for the actual melee. In fact, it works if you do it on multiple enemies even better.
Also, I personally believe that Blades should be more about controling the battlefield. Having a dot in Gold is mostly completely pointless, since killing enemies as effectivly, and as fast as possible is what we really need to do, so if you go for the explosions instead, you're guarenteed to have more control of the battlefield, have two stuns on every enemy per shot, and it will prevent enemies from instakilling you (Well, really just Brutes and Phantom's. Atlas's and Banshee's don't get stunned from it) if you melee them.
The cool thing about new classes is, multiple builds will be played through, and played with, until an "optimal" build is found. So until you've had a chance to see these builds in action, don't just write em off like thta.

Also, for the enemies to get close enough to me that I can use the spikes, they can kill me rather quickly (pyros for example). Should I not be using the Mattock?

I ignored the grenade which perhaps was a bad choice?
The blades are good, but only in short range.

Also I just don't care much for DoTs, you'll just get kill stealed and not be appreciated because you didn't score high (by most players standards anyway).
DoT's are like only good solo really. If you have 4 people wailing on an atlas, your dots won't get to do **** and you'd contribute more with up front damage so overall just limited effectiveness. Although I will say I would love to see either 2 or more batarian soldiers running this setup and just stacking blades everywhere, would be funny.

I agree that your build could work but I am doing very well with my melee Batarian Soldier. I was the last one standing last night and I literally shotted four pnantoms in a row; combination of Graal, Ballistic Blades and Heavy Melee. It's a very fun build and viable if used strategically, ignores Inferno Grenade.
