Are you implying that this mission represents the whole of ME2's side missions? Because if you are, you are wrong. If you are not, I can't see the point in your post.

I don't mind that there are fewer side quests in ME3 to be honest, it makes sense that when most of the galaxy is burning you're occupied by more important enterprises.

Like fetch quests.

yeah this is my issue with that argument. There could have been side quests with relevance to the plot (like the monastery or grissom academy) that made way more sense than sending shepard to find an old flag. The only excuse for the number of fetch quests in ME3 is lack of time and when you factor in how little those fetch quests factor in, because of the lack of war assets in the final mission. It's just insulting.

I thought ME2 had the best (overall) secondary missions.

ME1 had the best secondary missions in terms of "story" but the actual missions themselves were fly to one of three identically-shaped bases and clear the bases.  On the other hand, the missions were mostly interesting.  The one with Tooms, one about the pirates behind the Skyllian Blitz, a bunch about rachni and Cerberus, etc.  Now, why Hackett is sending you on these missions is a different question... :D

ME2 had fewer story missions but they were all on different places. Plus, you still got a good variety... I thought the MSV Estevanico (?) one was particularly interesting the first time with the abandoned spaceship that's about to fall off the cliff.  Then there's the one about protecting the Quarian, and the one about shutting down the mech facility...

ME3... I don't remember a single sidequest in ME3.  Probably had to hold some base or other on one of the MP maps?  They weren't memorable at all.

Of course I'm not. I still feel as a whole me1 had the better stories, I think some of the side missions were remembered badly because of re-used bases and average combat system. But if you remember the actual quality in the stories, it was the best.

No wonder ME 3 didn't feel as 'meaty' as the previous games. It wasn't. That's one of my first impressions on my first playthrough, that there wasn't enough combat oriented questing. The fetch quests far outnumbered any of the others. Sad.

OP, I was actually planning to have a look at that picture, but I ended up spending more than 5 minutes reading the Garrus Vakarian stuff in your signature...

I know, it's amazing. I prefer the original ME ones to the chuck norris copy pastes but still great

Graphic is misleading... sure there are a lot of fetch quests, but these are usually done during other quests, so the time investment is actually small.

IMO ME1 only had
Save colony Eden Prime
Find evidence against Saren on Citadel
Feros
Noveria
Find Liara - forgot planet name
Ilos
Citadel

That was it for the entire game. Everything else was like a fetch quest, simple and with reused and boring assets and minimal dialouge.

I still think the quality of the 'core' missions plus the 'core' side missions (like N7/Cerberus) have only improved over time. I love ME1, but after replaying the entire series (on ME3 now) the quality of the missions has improved drastically.

Probably one of my favorite mission in the entire series is the Grissom Academy. Everything about this hits the right parts, imo.

Now the writing over this time period.............no so much :-(

In ME3, I'd like less "fetch quests" and more "hub quests". Only one hub world worsen the feeling that that the universe lives. ME2 has this good. But on the other hand, the ME3 has very thorough and longer plot quests.

I agree, though I think the balance between quantity/quality was better in ME2. Grissom and some of the others are great quality, but there's just so damn few of them it doesn't matter. I mean if you take out priorty planet side missions and N7 go to an MP map and shoot some guys missions there's what 4-5 real side missions?

Grissom
Monastery
Grunt and the rachni
That thing with Jacob and some scientists

I must be missing some right?

Anyone who has ever played all three should know that this is just a statistical spin job. Can we get a graph on how many times ME 1 reused the same sidemission bunkers/ships?

As much as I hate the Mako at the very least the ME1 assignements were more interesting in my opinion.

ME2 and ME3 missions are much more linear.

Your data are informative, but one thing ME3 did have significantly more of was squad mate interaction on the Normandy and Citadel. In ME2 you might have your intro conv, then something new after Loyalty, but that was about it. I'm 3 they move around, talk to each other, and generally have more to say. That made up somewhat for the smaller number of sidequests for me.

Too bad most of it was Kasumi/Zaeed style dialogue where you were disconnected and didn't participate.
