I never thought I would be still playing DAO now but I am and I am having a problem....
Before patch 1.05 I could rename my mabari in the human playthrough, I havent tested this as another race after the imprinting battle, but after the patch I cant rename it, I have tried this multiple times and everytime it just automaticaly names it dog...which is not a big thing but it would be nice to rename it, is there anyway I can rename it manually as the game wont let me I dont even get the prompt to rename it anymore?

If you're on a console I don't think any other opportunities come up to name it:/
If you're on PC though maybe you can open the command prompt or something and go in and name it there? I'm not sure, I don't play on the PC.

You're welcome.
Do you have any mods installed?

If you have the respec mod installed you will have this problem as I did when I made a new character.
Close DAO, uninstall the respec mod, 2 files,
1 in documents/bioware/addins
1 in documents/bioware/packages/core/data
re run the game, save it then reinstall the respec mod (using dazip) the welcome will re appear and you will be able to name your dog when you meet him in the castle larder.

Different options are opened to you.
I'll quote Mongoose who wrote a helpful post about it two years ago.
[*]If the toolset won't work for you (unable to connect to database blah blah) as it did for me, I used an editor, meant for Dragon Age 2 I think but who works like a charm with DA:O saves as well.[/list]
http://social.bioware.com/project/1936
Use the editor.exe
Follow the same path given by Mongoose, meaning :
Open your last savegame, whose patch should be like My Documents / BioWare / Dragon Age / Characters / "Name of your character" / Saves
Select the .das file.
Clic the "+" to scroll down the list and find :
+ (numbers) SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST
and then
+ (numbers) SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS
Here should be your dog with any other character in your party.
Dog goes by the name of gen00fl_dog.
Under his (numbers) TEMPLATERESREF, find (numbers) SAVEGAME_OBJECT_NAME, and select the line.
In the box below marked "edit", enter the name you want for your dog, save, and enjoy
Here is a screen if you need help to find the line in the gff editor : http://i47.photobuck.../gffeditdog.png
- If you are using any respec mod, as Deano1981 said, you will have to disable them before entering the larder in order for the name window to pop.
- If you don't have any savegames - or if you're too lazy to do it again
- you can edit your save via the toolset.

So until Bioware fixes things, here's how to change the dog's name through the toolset:
- Go to My Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Characters/[name of your character]/Saves and find the folder with your latest save. Make a backup of the .das (Dragon Age Save) file in the folder.
- Open that same .das file in the Toolset.
- Drill down to SAVEGAME_PARTYLIST > SAVEGAME_PARTYPOOLMEMBERS.
- Under should be a numbered list of entries, starting with 0, with information about each NPC party member you currently have. Look for the dog's entry; it's the one starting with gen00fl_dog under TEMPLATERESREF.
- You should see a field SAVEGAME_OBJECT_NAME
under the dog's entry, and the field to the right should say something like 63091:Dog.
Change "Dog" or whatever is currently there to your new name. In the OP's case, it would be 63091:Mischief. IMPORTANT: Don't remove the number in front of the name. I'm fairly certain that's for dialogue ID purposes.
- Save your new savegame and open it ingame for verification. Voila, renamed dog.

Huh, did they remove this intentionally or is it a bug? Seems odd to remove a feature like this.

Tis a bug, mostly due to mods (especially respec mods).
But some people who were not using any still had the bug with the 1.2 patch if I remember well.
