I don't think she got the job for her looks, I think she got the job because she's supposed to be a geek magnet. I also think that's what lots of other people are thinking. It's stunt casting.
Yeah, there's that too.
That's what I actually pose as my main reason in threads about Chobot.
She's that perfect "gamer girl" that guys like. Anime, manga, video games in underwear and provocative positions. What guy wouldn't like her?
They did a bad job on her character model, though. Melty face.
See, this, is all fine. I totally agree with everything you've said here. Perfectly valid criticism.
It's when people start ****-shaming Jessica Chobot, and saying that she must have slept with someone at BioWare to get the job, that it crosses over into a personal, and a sexist, attack. (Link leads to a feminism 101 explanation of ****-shaming and why it's misogynistic.)
I'm not going to join in any discussion of this, btw. You'll either educate yourself, or not. I'll just keep reporting personal attacks and sexism when I see it.
Yup, that's pretty much the sum of it. The fact that an individual can see a few pictures, dissaprove of a performance, and then immediately leap to making blatant negative inferences into the personal character or professionalism of someone they've never met or spoken to is ridiculous.

Hating her is extreme, I agree with that. I merely hated the character and really, really disliked her performance. But even then, it's rather fallacious to equate hatred of one person to a hatred of their entire gender. Just though I'd point that out.
That would mean that I also hate myself. <_<

EDIT: Siduri has the right of it. Keep it out of that realm and you'll be fine. Head back in that direction and you won't.

A reasonable assumption based on character? That's idiocy.FatalX7.0 wrote...

Misogyny is people saying she ****ed execs at Bioware to get the gig.
That's being sexist, which goes for both genders.
But, it can also be a reasonable assumption based on character.

I do have a problem with the inclusion of Diana Allers though. I mean, what was the point? If we needed an intrepid reporter to assist Shepard's efforts to drum up support in the war, why not Emily Wong?

I didn't say it wasn't.

I'd feel bad, if she hadn't insulted Mass Effect fans.
I don't like being called a whiner.

For the record, I believe that the people who said this were (generally) joking. If you think the joke was in poor taste, fine, I can see that, but I highly doubt people were being serious.

I have nothing against the woman, but I do think that there were better options for a reporter on Normandy, Wong or Khalisah would have fitted into the story better. I also didn't like that they killed off Wong on Twitter.
I also don't like the connections to IGN but certainly the sexists comments are out of line.

It's rather jarring hearing her in the game, using her 'Daily Fix' tone of voice (I really hope she doesn't talk like that in real life). I would have much preferred Emily Wong, but alas, Bioware murdered her with Twitter for the sake of unwanted fan service.
My new multiplayer goal is to promote enough classes that I can safely play the single player game without ever letting her on my ship again. That is, if the EC fixes the ending to the point I'm even willing to play the single player again.

Hating all women is Misogyny. Hating one person who happens to be a woman is not.
It depends entirely on the way you go about hating that one woman.
When you demean a single woman in a way that demeans all women, it is misogyny.
My thanks to John Epler. You're a stand-up guy.

Trolls don't get a pass for employing misogyny because they're trolls. FYI.

Me?
Any girl who behaves like that is visibly self-conscious. I don't like people who use their body as a means to an end.

If it was done entirely for fan service, that's a shame. Emily was kinda cute. I think one promoted character gives you roughly the same amount of assets as Allers does. Unless you're also counting the bonuses you get from the interviews, in that case I can't say for certain how many you would need. I don't know exactly how many assets those bonuses grant you.
