The real handicap isn't useing the AR on a vangaurd, but not taking nova. No nova cancel on insanity?

You can Nova cancel, but I stopped using Nova after Palaven essentially.  It isn't all that big a handicap in the end though because you can spam Charge much easier than in ME2, and Charge detonates combos (Biotic, Tech, Fire, Cryo).

As for the AR, it depends.  In ME2 this was a handicap because of lower burst damage (with the possible exception of the Mattock, which I did not have), and the character only had 2 total weapons, so total ammo was down.  And with no SMG or shotgun, it wasn't quite as good against shields.  In ME3 the only detrimental effect is that you have less burst damage than a decent shotgun, and most are behind the SMGs in DPS/weight.  It isn't a huge deal though.

Umm nova is the best detonating power in the game due to not having to worry about cooldowns. It can detonate multiple targets as well. Spam area reave and wide singularity (and dark channel if you have it) and every charge is followed by lots simultaneous explosions.

I barely used my gun as a vanguard on insanity. Which is why I don't think using a AR is even a handicap. It barely mattered.

I am not sure where you are going with this line of thought. The reason this character has an AR is because he did in ME2... not out of some desire for a handicap in this game. However, AR's as a class are not on par with pistols or SMGs in damage per weight, which is an important concern. You can't say that it doesn't matter since you didn't use your gun... weapon weight affects your charge cooldown so just taking an SMG or Pistol and not firing it is superior to taking an AR and not firing it.

As for Nova, it only works in synergy with Charge. It is hardly the best detonating power in the game on its own merits because if you do not have charge it has a fairly pitiful cooldown (shield recharge speed) compared to something like Throw with the bonus of leaving you vulnerable to enemy fire. I was messing around with a No-Charge Novaguard this evening on Mars in fact. If you aren't charging it probably is not in league with something like double Throw or Cluster Grenades.

In any event, sure I agree that no Nova is more of a handicap on a charging Vanguard than a mandate to take an AR and a Pistol, but the class is still more than powerful enough to roll through the game, and with Charge evolved to Radius, a biotic squad mate or two, and a biotic bonus power, you still have more than enough detonations. And why I said it isn't "all that big a handicap." You just have to alter back to more an ME2 style where you fire your gun and don't just pres 1 then 2 then F for melee maybe, then repeat over and over.
