Origins gives you almost complete control over companions.  Many games do not do this.  So why does Origins have to be like the many games that don't

Origins... doesn't? I mean, it didn't so it obviously doesn't.

I'm not sure what you're asking me here.

I lost you, what does Origins not do?

In Origins, once you get Sten his sword back, he treats it like any other weapon. If you take it from him and sell it to a merchant, he doesn't react to that. This is despite the fact that he considers the sword his soul and the last time he lost it, he flew into a blood rage and killed a group of innocent farmers.

This is akin to my character pissing in the sacred ashes while Leliana watches and doesn't react to it.

In my ideal RPG, Sten would react to this. In the best case scenario, he'd confront you, demand the sword back, and attack you if you tried to sell it. At the very least, you'd lose a large amount of approval.

If BioWare didn't have the time/resources for that, then they'd just bind the weapon to Sten.

In Origins, there are things your companion will not tolerate. This should have been one for Sten.

That was just due to game mechanics though, once you gave Sten the sword it became like the rest of the weapons.  But I do agree he should react to you selling the sword.

And Leliana will betray you if you mess with the ashes, instantly.  unless maybe you harden her which i believe makes her stop caring about the maker

IIRC, she'll attack even if you harden her. I was using that as an example of a companion acting against the usual script for a very clear reason.

Alternatively, I don't think Sten cares whether he wears Red Iron armor or Silverite armor, so being able to switch those out is not a problem in DA:O.

I love being able to adjust armors, but in a real life situation you wouldn't be able to tell your friends how to dress ("Not those pants, THESE pants!)

I realize a Dragon age game isn't real life, but I do love how your companions seem to have some sense of autonomy from the pc. Imagine making Isabella wear pants. Or telling Carver to change his shirt. Or telling Aveline she can't wear the headband anymore. Riiiiiight.

Now I also understand that in a war-type situation, everybody's going to be scrambling for the best armor they can find, and nevermind if it's in their favorite color - which is why (though probably unintentionally) it actually makes more sense to be able to change your companions' armor in DA:O that it does in DAII. Though how you ever managed to make the same armor fit Oghren as Sten or Leliana is beyond me.

So... I think interchangeable (and maybe color and fabric customizeable?) bonus pieces that still fit the signature look of each companion makes the most sense.

Well, in real life you wouldn't wear same clothes for 3 years non stop, just because they 'fit' your character and if you would find some bulletproof vest when going to a warzone, you'd prolly equip it over your stylish clothes.

Yea I read the rest and I'd liek to have some customization in the game, at least something like DA2 had with off pieces and me3 for the attires - 3 per char or more unlocked in the game (no, don't freakin make them buyable...)

Personally, I don't care about realism.

I would have liked more changes in companion attire over time, however.

In dragon age 2 you can sell sebastian family bow, without any problems, so yea It's same as stens sword (would actually be crap if you were locked when you got sword, no matter that stats gimp him alter on), of course some additional dialogues after you sold it would be nice.

As for Leliana, I remember her becoming hostile, leaving party and attacking me, making me execute her after I desecrated the ashes so dunno....

If you bring her to the ashes, then it doesn't matter, it does however if you don't and talk wth her in the camp about it.

... I guess I'm not really sure what we're supposed to be disagreeing on, here.

It seems like nothing more than a marketing thing to me. Bioware wants to make DA characters more like Assasins Creed and Gears of War characters so they can make more money on the characters likness.

All this does is take away the creativity Origins had.

Which they've never said.

Are you guys reading this thread:

Because halfway through Mike Laidlaw makes a suggestion about basing follower armour restriction on the stats instead of class that may allay some of your fears.

But arn't the followers limited to their own armour upgrades (to keep their ionic look)
