Played a few minutes last night, looks very simple and easy so far and nothing like the Risen difficulty but i was tired so only played for an hour.

Will continue tonight again and see what happens.

I've been playing it for 4 hours now. Great game, it's better than I expected it to be.

Well... I'm intrigued. How does it play compared to the original Risen?

Combat-wise for example?

Edit: I may or may not buy it this weekend. Looking for gameplay videos at the moment.

I just got to the second island. My impressions so far:

Combat
- fighting enemy charcters in particular is a ton of fun (feels like fencing, with extra stuff on top..throwing coconuts at them, using a pistol etc.)

- fighting creatures is kinda boring since all you can do is click the attack mouse button - you can't block their attacks or dodge. Some of them can also stun you so you can't do anything but take damage and run/jump away.

- but overall it's better than Risen for sure

Gameworld
- handcrafted and it shows - it's well very done

- exploring is fun and rewarding

- the two islands are relatively small, maybe there will be larger areas later on

What I dislike
- the hero can't swim

- no dodge in combat

- boring fights against creatures

I'd give it 8/10 so far.

from what you said about combat, it seems more like gothic rather than risen :?
How is the combat difficulty then?

If you've got a companion with you, it's pretty easy. If you go solo, it gets a bit harder. The combat is nothing like Gothic though.

Well the fencing part sounds like fun. As for the two islands, I have read there are lots more to explore. I don't understand why they removed dodge though.

Do you know anything about the magic system? I'm wondering if there's any mana regen or if you just need to chug potions. Perhaps it's silly, but that's actually one of my main concerns about magic.

There's no magic. Only voodoo stuff. Not sure how that works since I went for firearms path instead of voodoo..

Alright, well thanks for answering anyway. I'm trying it.

Edit: I have it, but I am not sure I can play it yet. My graphics card got fried recently and is in the hands of the manufacturer at the moment so it will be quite interesting to see if my laptop can run it or if it'll just explode :)

Been playing Risen 2 a few hours now. I'm on the first island. As expected, some things are a bit silly, but overall I'm really enjoying myself.

Patty is much more powerful than I am so far. Does more damage, starts out knowing some of the fighting moves. I'm guessing that changes at some point.

Don't worry there are all the combat moves like parry, and heavy blows from risen, and lots of more fun stuff like throwing sand into the opponent's eyes, kicking and so on.
Against critters you can't block, because this time there are no shields around. Guess it would be a bit silly in a pirate setting wielding a cutlass with a towershield.

This is my first piranha bytes game in which I use ranged weapons. And guns feel good. Luckily there is no auto target but real aiming.

And I'm enjoying it with a cold glass of Captain Morgan.

Yeah guns seem really good. In my duels so far, I noticed my pistol seemingly does 10 times as much damage as my sword.

I have decided I want to go with swordplay and something that works well with it. I'm thinking voodoo to occupy foes while I hack away, or perhaps the Cunning line with dirty tricks.

Only thing is, I don't really know how any of it works yet. You don't have mana, so I supposed you need some form of item (and maybe consumables) to use voodoo.

PS: I love the fact that you can tip crabs so they can't fight back. I was very surprised at first.

Haven't played one for myself, but from the previews I remember you'll get scepters and dolls. So you can curse enemies for a debuff and some damage and there is a scepter, with which you aim at two opponents at let them frenzy against each other. For quests there are some mainquests where you can remote control a guy to get infos and sneak into bases you normally have no entrance to.

Yeah I learned the trick but am missing the time frame when to kick the crabs so atm Patty is doing this for me.

Bah. Stuck. Can't join Steelbeard. Done eveything I can think of, and he just says it isn't enough. Got the rum, dealt with the sunken one, did the drinking contest, got the treasure, ran various errands.

Good game, but it could provide you with some sort of clue as to what you're supposed to do here.

There is another treasure from a corpse named Pete. And you can beat up two pirates at the cove. One wants gold from you for talking to the prostitute, the other simply insults you for being weak.

Did you free Largo?

I just got my own ship and there's a few islands to explore. Loving the game so far. Together with Sid Meier's Pirates!, it is the best pirate game I've ever played.

Btw, I am using some graphics tweaks (less pop-up, better viewdistance).

I've edited the thread title now that the game is out, would be interested to hear what you all think of Risen 2 if you've picked it up. I'm on the fence at the moment.

User reviews for it on Metacritic aren't looking good. It currently has a user review of 4/10 with most complaints suggesting it's like Risen but even worst and dumbed down. Most people complain about the controls, clunky combat and the fact that it feels unpolished.

The Xbox 360 version will probably be horrible then. I won't mistake of buying it like I did the first.

I think I've got it... the industry is dying because of idiots, not gaming companies. These 4 and 3 reviews are non-sensical! FFS! I saw a review repeated inbetween TWO different users ><

I can't give a full review, because I'm not done yet but I could give some clues for people that are interested:

First
of all it's a Piranha Bytes game and then it's a Pirate game. What does
this mean? Simple if you didn't enjoy Gothic 1, 2 and 3 (4 doesn't
count different Developer horrible gameplay), or Risen than you will
defenitely not enjoy this.
It has all the flaws and features of a Piranha Bytes game. The animations are ridiculous, the main character is of course nameless and set, the story is subpar and it has the typically 5 percent women rate.

Story/Gameplay: It losely follows up the story from Risen 1. After the Titans returned to the World the gods left, humanity is on the brink of annihilation and magic is lost. In Risen 1 there was still magic due to the chained Titan under the volcano. This time there is only Voodoo. The savages located on the Sword Coast are descendants from former slaves of the Titan Lords of ancient times.
The story unfolds like in all Piranha Bytes games. At the beginning almost nobody knows you. You have little to no skills and there are three major factions. Sounds familiar? Yes Gothic 1 had the Old and New Encampment and the Cult. Gothic II had the mercenaries at the farm, the paladins and the mages. Gothic III was a bit different. Risen had the bandits, inquisitors and mages.
But this is not the sole problem of Piranha Bytes almost every major developer has its stanard story. Like The Elder Scrolls' prisoner, or Bioware's only survivor of a reclusive organisation gathering allies to fight an ancient evil.
This time no matter what you do you become a pirate. Pirates in Risen 2 are more like the bandits from previous installments than the Pirates of the Carrebean from the movies.
Becoming a pirate reminded me of the good old Monkey Island games because you had to do many pirate related quests to prove your worth.
Later you choose to either help the savages and become a voodoo priest, or help the Inqusition and become a riflemen. The choice changes your skills. Voodoo priest can handle small pistols but no rifles. Instead they have various curses and get the opportunity to remote control given characters in specific quests.
Inquisition allied characters get real rifles and the training.
I chose Inqusition because I tried to rp a Sir Francis Drake/Conquistador kind of Pirate. And Rifles are fun.

Graphics/Audio: The music is really good. The maintheme is captivating and it changes the mood in fights or locations like caverns. The track running in caverns reminds me of the score from the original fallouts in some kind. But there could be more songs and the mood should change at key locations. For example at two times you leave an island with a ship and you won't get an epic depature song.
The graphics of the game are good and in some points really bad. The landscape are handpicked up to the smallest rock. You have to look twice to find all the hidden caverns and trails on the islands. But like the animations some things looks gross. Women's hands have the size of a excavator shovel. And dialogues are not really lipsync.
I can't say anything about the voice over because I play it in german sub (quite a change to play again in my mother tongue). But I know that the previous game had Andy Serkis and John Rhys-Davis as voice actors.

Combat: This is a matter of taste: I like that you have to learn new moves from trainers and how the combat works. Many people from other countries really distaste it. You get less moves for weapons like in Risen 1, but you get two types of tricks. Dirty tricks, which is connected to thief skills and tricks which is connected to hardness (a skill which covers things like fortification in combat and making you own rum). A good example of a trick is kicking a giant crab so it falls on the back and you could easily kill it. A dirty trick would be throwing sand or salt into the enemies eyes or shooting your offhand pistol.

Other skills: They range from training a monkey to break into houses and steal stuff, teaching a parrot to attack enemies and crafting. There are also two types of persuasion skills. You could craft cutlasses, rifles, rum, potions, and voodoo stuff. Character development is less clunky than in prior games. You have basic stats like Rifles or Blades and Thievery. Which each cover three talents and for this talents you can learn perks. Attributes are risen (sry for the pun) with spending Valor. Valor is like XP. So they start with 1 than you need 1000 valor to rise it to 2 and 2000 for rank 3. Perks have different requirements like having a specific stat to 6 and/or learned the previous rank. Learning perks also cost gold.

Conclusion: This is no TW2 with it deep choices, the environment is not as big as skyrim and it hasn't got the well presented dialogue of Bioware games. But if you liked the Gothic series this could be your game. If you only jumped the train because of the Pirate Setting you will be disappointed because this is no Johnny Depp movie.

And to the metacritic comments: Yeah metacritic give a 1/10 if the game is not what you expected and a 10/10 if your a fanboy. I won't have to remind you of the FNV disaster which was better received from the crowd as Fallout 3 and Obsidian, who had to fire people because the didn't get their deserved bonus.

It's a bloody good game. It is definitely MUCH better than Risen imho. If you like PB-style RPGs, it's a must have.
