I agree about it being a good game. I have Risen as well (and was a big Gothic 2 fan also), and I'd say I enjoy Risen 2 more, but that's just me. There are a few not-so-polished elements (like quicksave and autosave making a new save every time with no limit, that kind of thing), but overall it's just a really enjoyable and a very detailed game that's just oozing atmosphere.

I have learned voodoo most recently in the game, and despite the bad things I've read in reviews about it, it's quite enjoyable (although I'm having a very hard time finding enough gold to train). I'm guessing some of the control complaints have to do with the xbox version, as you can keybind different main weapons easily on the PC (which is absolutely essential for voodoo, because you don't want to cast Fear and then whack them with a not-so-sharp scepter).

1 day and a half and I'm 11 hours in. It's felt like three. This game hasn't got the polish of a big budget game, but it's got the passion. And that's what games lack now-a-days. It's not the Witcher 2 when it comes to plot. But **** it's a great game.

I've always thought PB games were more about exploration and atmosphere than plot anyway. But it's nice to see that the pirate theme works out relavitely well, and the English voice acting isn't horrible as I remember it from Gothic 2, where I actually laughed a few times because of the different accents. As a matter of fact, I think the voice acting works well so far.

I think the voice acting is great! It's not BioWare, but these pirates nail every line. And the cursing! Great use of swear words... the Witcher 2's dwarves curse better though.

It's a fairly typical PB game, with a pleasant "old-school" feel to it and a nice fresh pirate setting (I, for one, am beginning to get tired of Tolkien-esque medieval fantasy). The use of party members is unusual for them but I welcome it.

Combat is challenging (I died more times in my first 5 hours of R2 than in my whole playthrough of DA2), character growth is very slow (of course, you don't just get a skill when levelling, you have to find a teacher for it and pay him), exploration is fun, (although the lack of swimming was a bad idea) and you better buy maps ASAP, no quest compass, graphics ok but animations are quite poor, voice acting is passable, there are often multiple quest solutions and overall it feels like a rough gem. Can't wait to get the cunning skill which lets you control a pet monkey that breaks into houses and steals stuff.

Worth playing.

Just finished the game and I think this may be the best PB game yet. I love Gothic + Gothic 2 NoTR, but Risen 2 just surpassed them on my list.

Hopefully there's a lot more gold in the game than what I've found so far. I feel very poor. Perhaps I should have bought some thieving skills after all.

I ended the game with 19+k gold (though I do have the Treasure Island DLC), a ton of loot in inventory and I bought all the skills that were available to me.

Thieving skills are worth it for sure.

Unrelated, but I thought it was funny (saw this somewhere).

Obviously it was pirates.

Anyway just after making my previous post, I found 3 treasures and some other hidden stuff.

I'm liking voodoo so far. It sucks at first because you need to be at a specific Black Magic level to even use your scepters, and you don't start out with the Death Cult ghost either. But once you get to a decent level (and supplement with some jewelry), it starts to make sense. The story lines based around voodoo are fun too and you get to play other characters when you mind control them. Well, for a little while, but still.

I just realized I might be able to make two turkeys fight... Yep, needs to be done :)

It took some time but I am through.

Having experienced the whole game I will add some stuff to my "preview":

As I mentioned it got all the Piranha Bytes flaws, what I've forgotten to add I sure has all its features.
In contrast to other open world games it has some memorable characters. Best example would be the crew. A mad, white witch doctor, a kleptomaniac gnom, a young, inexperienced but eager marksman/gorgeous voodoo witch (changes with faction choice), and a ship's cook wo can't even boil water.
And yeah it's open world. After you get your own ship the whole ocean becomes your playground. Some locations will only be available after specific main quests, but you have to hop islands often to get to your skill trainers.
Previous Piranha Byte games had one big Island (not counting Gothic 3) and places with critters so powerful that you can get there only late game. That ended in walking around the same areas from the beginning of the game till 50 hours later in the game. This time there is more handholding. Handholding implies your crew/group members. Sure you get some good respones in certain situations, but for me it has more flair to solo the game. Fights are also to easy with group members. And some quests are nobrainers, because the active party member will comment and help to much.
Quests quality changes in midgame. There are a lot of fetch quests but they are presented better. And some outcomes are less predictable than in other games of this developer.
The statement that this is no Johnny Depp movie was connected to the last three parts of the series. Must be changed. There are sunken, fishlike monster pirates. There is an actual ghost ship. And you can become the second man in a local tribe. Later in game you get even stranded on a remote island. No, no turtles will help but the questline that follows was one of the most remarkable and funny in the whole game.
I later regretted taking rifles. Combat was fun and with maxed marksman skill far too easy. But I guess I missed a whole bunch of the comic reliefs. The whole voodoo puppet remote thing and talking with the majority of the savages.
The indigenous people of the sword coast have a epical ludircrous way of talking. Haven't played with english voice over, but they use words like "Bambule" (a german slangword from the seventies for trouble/brawling), "palaver" (another colloquially word; this time for chatting) and "hoshi" (remember Bill and Ted's Excellend Adventure).
And it has become the most accessible Piranha Byte game. You got questmarker, fast travel and a special marker for trainers and merchants on the map. Best thing all of this is complete optional. If you like to keep it true you can.

I would give Risen 2 a 8.5/10. This is the objective score.
If you are a fan of the studio since Gothic 1 and like the grumpy pirates like I do. Give it a 9.5.

I finished the games with using dirty tricks mostly and some times Voodoo. Voodoo is a bit underused in combat me thinks and using parrots, salts, coconuts, fire oil was more entertaining.
But using voodoo dolls in quests to control low-lives was a blast :)

Potion making(ritual) was better then previos games, but still i used it only for upgrading my stats. At least we are not becoming an unstopable juggernaut this time.

There was enough Glory to raise my 4 main stats to 9. With +1 help from artifacts they become 10. And got enough  gold to train any skill ı can, after some treasure hunting you start to swim in gold.

While i love swashbuckling fighting style, i really miss dodging from first game. Parrying was good against humanoids but monsters gave me real trouble. Especially ghouls, guardians and that fatso at İsle of Thieves. He was harder then any other fight in game.(end boss was a joke...)

As a Gothic fan i really liked the game, there is  only one that thing bothered me. It seems there was less exploration. While there is 7 islands most of them are pretty straight forward and traps/puzzles in tombs were easy.

There was a patch yesterday. Dodging is now in the game.

Parrying was good against humanoids but monsters gave me real trouble.

With the patch you can now parry most of the monster attacks.

Especially ghouls, guardians and that fatso at İsle of Thieves. He was harder then any other fight in game.

This fatty was easy for me. Just kiting and gun blazing with rifles.

(end boss was a joke...)

Yeah she was. But to be honest all Piranha Byte bosses were. At least we got no platform game like in Risen 1. I liked the approach of Gothic 1: Killing three demons and a cutscene for the boss fight.

A dodge and parrying monster attacks...
Its a bit late for me(and my little zoo :)) going to try muskets on my next playthrough.
But parrying monster attacks sounds like a bit overkill, dodge was enough IMHO(if it was like old versions)

And you are right, all of them bosses were cakewalk. Still remember killing undead dragon in 3 crossbow shots...
At least this one is humanoid and we can use every tactic in game. Attacking it with a coconut made my day :)
It was done in 4-5 ripostes :)

I'm a few hours into it already.
It's exactly what i expected: a Piranha Bites game, i.e. a game that your brain knows has flaws, but your heart doesn't care.

Risen? People actually liked that? With it's static faces, senseless plot and weed smoking monks? I suppose there was the combat system... it wasn't very good but it was there.

Risen has one of the best Chapters 1 and 2 ever, of any RPG's. Rushed chapters 3 and 4 showed us that the Piranhas still couldn't take all the time they might want to finish their games properly. Still, it is a great game, with the worst final boss ever, well, if you don't consider Marauder Shields the final boss in ME3.

I've juist started Risen 2, with the latest patch, gladly, because the worst thing I read about it was the combat and the patch is supposed to fix it to a degree at least.

I haven't got far but it has that great PB games feeling and atmosphere all over it. I hope I can play it more because ME3 multiplayer is so addctive that I can't stop playing it, except for the past 3 weeks when I was away and with no internet!
