Achieving the "best" ending without multiplayer is outright IMPOSSIBLE. Proof inside. Bioware please acknowledge this issue.

Thank you so much for your post and for taking the time to gather your facts concisely to make your case (looking at all those numbers gives me a headache)! I have been VERY disappointed ever since I learned (after I purchased the game) that single player mode is directly affected by MP (or more precisely, the 50% modifier). It was my understanding when I bought (pre-ordered) the game that it would be a single player experience for me, just as it was in the first two games. I was FURIOUS when I found out that MP is needed to "succeed." I can't recall any pre-release press coverage that alluded to this - I (and many others like me) proceeded on the assumption it would be a single player game - MP would be another way to gather assets, but it would not affect SP in any way.

I am hoping what you wrote in your OP is the case - certain folks at Bioware who really need to hear this to ensure it's at least addressed in some manner have yet to get the message (the "big wigs" are genuinely unaware of this pressing issue).

Mac Walters in an interview, where this very topic came up around launch. Saying how the MP will help you but you won't need it. Easier to put up with in text format.

Personally I wonder if they are even looking at the same game they shipped to us. All the things they say, maybe they have an in office version thats somehow different than the retail version. It is the only thing I can think of to explain this strange disconnect...

If any of you peeps have iphone, ipod touch or ipad (maybe you can get it on android too but im not sure), go download "Mass Effect Datapad". It has a galaxy at war minigame where you can raise your % instead of doing multiplayer, not to mention you can access your codex, recieve text messages from characters in the single player (including people not even on your ship such as miranda).

After you upgrade your fleets fully, you can get about 2.5% increase per turn (about 5 hours real time) on a second set of upgrades.

Not probably what people want to hear here, but its an option of increasing your % without playing multiplayer.

It's conceivable that they're not looking at the same version. There have been a couple of cases where what got burned onto the gold master wasn't the right set of files.

But not likely.

I have no iPhone or iPad. Neither do I have Xbox live gold. And the 'i' apps are not available for android. Should I be S.O.L? I know I am, but should I be?

No, Datapad is NOT a part of Single Player game, hence your argument is not valid. Plus I did not see a requirement to own Apple device on the box when I bought the game.

Bioware is fully aware of this issue as we are writing about it on this forum second month running, we have PM'd them (and they confirmed they read it), we have asked them on their Twitter accounts (and they replied)... So their silence means they either don't give a flying f@*&, or this was their intent form the beginning, to lure people into MP microtransactions and iOS apps.

I wan't making an argument, just simply saying there are other options. Maybe I should have said I pretty much agree with you guys on this. Multiplaying imho can affect the single player game, but should definately not be mandatory.

For instance, playing multiplayer matches could unlock upgrades and particular weapons which could maybe then ahve been found in the normandys weapon lockers. That would have been a nice touch, without making it necessary to play MP to get all the endings.

I think you hit the nail on the head there with the microtransaction line.

Great post, OP. I can only hope this help clearing the confusion about this issue (even BW seems very confused). They should really fix this and make every ending available even if you only played SP (you know, just like they promised us).

I realise this is well into the realms of splitting hairs, but was the phrasing "It's possible to get the best ending without playing multiplayer"?  If so, then technically it's accurate, as the iOS Datapad "game" isn't a multiplayer thing...

That said, that's still far from perfect as it relies on you having handed Apple a wodge of your cash for a suitable device; if the datapad was available on multiple phone platforms and possibly Windows as well (or even just a web page you could access through your account) it'd be more reasonable, if still a bit annoying.

Great post. This information was already scattered around, but this one was very well written and to the point.

I've been away the last few days for the holidays... I was hoping for a response by now.
I see they removed Jarret Lee's sticky, which is progress... but no word yet? Hmmm

I'm leaning to believe they removed Jarrett's sticky because they thought it is no longer and issue, everybody knows how things work and there's no need to explain EMS anymore.

First off, I acknowledge that people here have a legitimate point. You SHOULD be able to achieve the "best" ending without setting foot in multiplayer, and Bioware needs to address that.

But that said, I would encourage everybody here to at least give the multiplayer a try. I was skeptical too when Bioware first announced the feature, but I've actually been won over by how fun it is. (And honestly? 99% of the time nobody says a word in a match, at least on PC, so people who are reluctant to play matches with rude players hurling racist/sexist remarks left and right probably don't need to worry.)

I gave a try myself, as I was curious. However, latency issues make it unplayable for me. I can shoot anything only if I'm the host, in which case others can't shoot anything. I can't be the only one facing that.
Besides, to most of us, the attraction of Mass Effect is the story. As MP has no story... Well, you get it.

I have noticed the voices raised about this issue are getting louder. They'll be even louder still when the extended cut is released.

I think you are right Tietj.

In my own case, I'm only now speaking up about it because I reached the ending recently - after a thorough play through, taking my time to enjoy every corner of the game.  I avoided as many spoilers about the endings controversy  as I could, so in effect avoided threads about this non-achievable ending problem at the same time.

I wonder if there will be more people affected by this later as I have seen many people say they were waiting to play once the face import issue was resolved?

What do you want Bioware to say?  "Sorry, we're going to increase the turian war asset by 800 to help people get the best ending."  lame  :-

Well, the Turians should have more war assets.  I mean, they're supposed to be the biggest military power in the galaxy.

But you know, by the magic word "ART" they can explain everything.

Doesn't it?

This is really kind of a ridiculous situation. First of all, it's the easiest fix in the world. Second, the people complaining about this are not complaining about something subjective like the quality of the endings. Speaking for myself, I LOVED the game as a whole package, and I love most Bioware games (even DA2). The ending certainly wasn't my favorite part but I have faith in the extended cut.

I have nothing but respect for the company, but I would really like to achieve the 4000 EMS ending (especially when the extended cut comes out) and I don't have a strong enough connection to play multiplayer. I hate sounding like I'm complaining, just fix the problem already! Or at least acknowledge it.

Same for me. When I pre-ordered I was expecting what they promised me while implementing MP - MP is not required to achieve all endings in SP - they even claimed that we, SP players, should not even look at EMS and consider it. It all can be recitified - loose EMS for those who don't play MP - let TMS count or loose Shepard breathing ending or implement it for all those who went above 3, something k EMS.

They are aware actually. There have been previous threads like this, with all the data and everything, and Bioware did respond to one of them quite helpfully. I believe they said something like, "Don't call us liars! We are not liars! Thread closed!"
