Why did everyone hate this game? I wasn't around when this first came out, I never followed the news on it as Dragon Age never really appealed to me at the time but I finished Dragon Age 2 a couple of nights ago and I found it a great game.
I mean I really liked the whole concept of seeing the storyline evolve over the years in the game and the characters felt well fleshed out. Also enjoyed the gameplay, it felt like KotOR but better.
Personally it still isn't as good as any of the ME games but I really did enjoy it and I can get the whole re-used levels complaint, that was kinda annoying but other than that I don't see what was wrong with it.
So...

I didn't hate it. It didn't match all my expectations from a game that came from Bioware after Origins, Jade Empire, and Kotor. It still holds its own against other games that came out that year.
I think with Bioware games, people have come to hold Bioware to this really high standard, and the fact that DA2 was rushed, had less development time than the average game Bioware usually puts out, and the fact that the game had several tiny flaws that ultimately added up as a list of things that annoyed people, and it turned the game from a great game to a good game.
I personally think the hate is just the disappointment people felt that it didn't match the standard set by previous Bioware games.

I didn't hate it, and I generally have more fun playing that game than the first. My main issue was how Hawke seemed almost like a side character in his own game, a reactive force instead of a proactive one. Another issue I had was the fact that nearly every character in the game seemed to lack common sense which would lead to really idiotic situations (Thrask and Grace in Act III jumps to mind). The recycled environments are also a big issue, and the world itself was just so small and restrictive compared to that of the first game.

As I said. Relatively small issues that, if they stood alone, wouldn't be that big of a deal. But when there are several small annoyances, they add up and detract from the whole.

I know how you feel! I actually loved this game - in a lot of ways, in most ways, more than Origins. Yes, the recycled levels were lame, yes the world felt a little more restricted than Origins, yes the combat got significantly button-mashy, the list goes on..I understood how these and other things eally affected some players' experiences, but it certainly didn't affect mine.
I totally adored every minute of it. I'm starting a second playthrough, and I never really considered a second playthrough of Origins. A lot of people would disagree and think I'm crazy, but there it is!

I felt the same way on my first playthrough.

Eventually I changed my mind.
Then I settled that they are just two different games, each with it's own merits.

I enjoyed the game but I'm not too critical of Rpgs
I still enjoyed DA:O more though and I hope DA 3 is improved from DA 2.

Play DA:O and then go back and play DA2.see if your feelings differ or become stronger.
me personally i do love DA2 just wish the acts were a little more lined up to board.felt bit random at times, and combat while improved was mashtastic.
DA:O is still my favorite out of the franchise so far.im interested in DAIII

personally i loved DA2. there were some bad things such as the recycled environments and whatnot but overall it was a good game with an awesome plot. i felt a lot more attached to hawke than the grey warden in DA:O
but that's just my opinion...
