WOW is it ever different from 2 and 3....even moreso than I remember! The different weapons, omni-gel, the way you level up and how powers are used. When you look back it's like a totally different game, and I'm only 50 minutes in!
Is this because EA took over from Microsoft Studios? What do you think led to major changes within the game? What change do you like best? What change do you hate? Would you bring anything back if you could?
DISCUSS!
Just started a new Mass Effect 1 game and....

It is a different game.
Changes I like -
1. Taking out the junk weapons and armor from ME1. 95% ~ 99% of the things you loot are utterly useless and there is no option to turn all of them into omni-gel with a single click. While many love the messy inventory and claim that a messy inventory is essential to a RPG game, I simply cannot disagree more strongly.
2. The Mako handles like a mustang which kills the fun of exploration. Then they try to do it with a less annoying Hammerhead that likes to fire missiles at things that I dint not aim at. Good riddance to both the Mako and the Hammerhead. I can live with leaving the driving to the shuttle pilot.
3. More responsive and fluid combat in ME2 and ME3.
--------------------------------
The only thing I would like to retain from ME1 is the exploration part, minus the Mako and Hammerhead. With all that technology in the universe of Mass Effect, I am sure they are very capable of making better exploration vehicles that does not drive like a mustang or fly like a drunk sparrow.

I also just got the ME1 game and installed new. My question is are there any patches for it and if so where can I find them.

Beguiler59: If you bought the game from Steam it should already be up-to-date. Otherwise google "mass effect patch", it's the very first result (link to bioware.com).
I wonder why ME1 isn't listed in the menu here.

I think the reason the drastic changes were implemented was to appeal to a wider range of audience.
For example, mass effect 1, to level up to the max rank it could take almost 3 playthroughs! Thats a long time, considering the enormous amount of planet exploration and things you can only access as say, an engineer. Mass Effect 1 was great, but a rather long, slow game. Mass Effect 2 was a cover shooter, utilising ammo, which made it appeal to more casual gamers. Also, less time to level up to the max rank meant more people could enjoy the game without having to play for hours and hours and hours. This was pushed to the max with ME3, with Bioware probably being pressured by EA into making it appeal to EVERYONE.

One of the funniest parts of Mass Effect 1 is with the achievement awards, you can start building bizarre characters. I'm currently using an Adept with a Sniper Rifle. It's not terribly effective to mix biotics with sniping (well, except singularity), but it's damn funny.

After doing ME 2 and ME3 and after my 4th playthrough of ME1 just finished last night reaching level 58. I decided to play ME2 again and get the genesis so I could import my ME1 badass, everything went ok till I tried to import and it told me no saves found and to configure my saves. Well I can play ok but have no idea what they mean or how to reconfigure saves from ME1I have 4 of them.Any help out there?

Yeah, you have to use the Configure tool on the menu to tell the game where the ME1 files are.

My opinions on the series:
ME1:
+Best story
+Tangible bigness
+Best conversations
+RPG mechanics
-Inventory
-Some clunky gameplay
ME2:
+Graphics
+Gameplay improvement
+Interrupts
-Cerberus
-Lack of tangible bigness
-Deviation from main plot
-Ridiculous story
-Too many pointless characters
-Too dumbed down
-Terminator
-Mac Walters
ME3:
+Great gameplay
+Multiplayer
+Rannoch, Tuchanka
-Cerberus
-Bad story
-Worst conversations
-Horrible ending
-Space ninjas
-Space swords
-Mac Walters
I don't think EA had much to do with any of the problems in the latter two games. Mass Effect was very much Bioware's IP. I think that Bioware just tried a little too hard to appeal to EA's sensibilities.

Some of the things that most irritate me about ME1:
- Inventory management (not the inventory itself)
- Clumsy control
- RECICLED MAPS (Hangar, Bunker, Mine and Starship)
ME1 is a great game, but we cannot ignore that it had some flaws and ME2 fixed lots of them...... at the expense of ruining some things that were right, same applies to ME3
