See if we had that the "Not Fade Away" style of non-ending, at least Mass Effect would have ended on an epic cliffhanger.

Garrus: So, ten thousand husks between us and the target. Think we can do it, Shepard?
Shepard: Always have before.
Tali: An unstoppable army and impossible odds? Keelah, it must be a tuesday...
Liara: I admire your confidence, but we're going to need a plan?
Garrus: Got any ideas, Shepard?
Shepard: I don't know about you... but personally, I'm going to take out Harbinger! *Reloads shotgun* Lets get to work!

NOW THAT IS HOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE!

Indeed. Joss is brilliant at characterization and dialogue, but his endings almost always involve lots of unnecessary death - especially if a functional couple is involved. Give Joss Whedon a cast that involves a loving relationship, and you can be 100% sure that one of them will meet a tragic and terminal fate in the end.

Now THAT is an open ending as it should be, providing a sense of closure while being ambiguous enough to allow each viewer's imagination to fill in the gaps to their hearts' delight:

The fatalists can envision a tragic confrontation ending in utter ruin and death.
The martyrdom-fans can picture the crew dying heroic deaths as they successfully stop their enemy.
And those who crave a happy ending can see them succeeding against all odds, defying what seems like an unavoidable fate and living happily ever after.

To some extent I'd agree, but I feel like they could've made the ending much better without losing the element of art/open-endedness. The delivery is part of it too. Frankly, it's just not very good, on an ART level.

I would just like to point out that firefly didn't have a downer ending,I mean some of my favorite characters died but the majority lived, they uncovered a secret, took a stand, and got away in the end. Now imagine if ME3 had had an ending like that where after losing so many friends Shepard still got to make a heroic stand and fly away in the end. I don't think there would be a dry eye on the net.

What about Titan AE then? That has a very upbeat ending and was written by him :P

Yea, I'd be crying from laughing so hard at cliche happy ending.

Well right now I am laughing at the fact that anyone who isn't a 12 year old goth kid would think the ending we have is "deep" or "well written".

Thanks to this thread I am rewatching firefly,it looks great on Blu Ray.  I keep imagining how awesome Mass Effect would have been if Bioware had just made the gameplay and let someone like JW or JMS write the scripts for them.

Yeah well said.

I love your avatar.  How do you upload a custom avatar any way?  I have been trying but can't figure out how you get one besides the default ones on this site.  Hench the chicken, since I am in Delaware it seemed the most suited to me.

If he wrote ME3, we'd have gun duels everywhere ;c)

Honestly, love Firefly, curious about The Avengers.

And his quote: spot on.

NOW THAT IS HOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE!

If you just stop the game right after Shep's speech to the squad in London, it's not really too far off from this.

Now all I have to do is convince myself that everything that happened afterwards actually didn't, and I'll be ready to accept this as my canon ending.

In my head i have an ending where taking down Harbinger makes it so the other Reapers are unable to work togehter so they can be taken down one at a time.

Joker would get impaled, no question.

Though, since Joker is part of the ME franchise, it would be cooler when he turned into a Joker Husk.  He'd be the first Husk to take down Shepard with the power of Sarcasm.

Well if you went with my ending in another thread he could get into a sarcasm off with Standler and Waldorf.

Buffy and Angle where crap.

You do realize that Buffy is the only series that didn't get cancelled before Whedon finished the storyline? That it has some of the best (female) protagonists of any TV series to date? That without its success there was probably no chance of Joss' other TV and film projects getting off the ground?

Show some respect. Firefly is my favorite of the lot as well but I am DAMN grateful for Buffy and I got a lot of enjoyment out of it (seasons 2, 3 and 6 in particular).

I just wish game companies would hire real writers to write their scripts instead of having programers who don't know much about story telling or dialog write them.

I'm just saying if they really think video games are art then why not go the extra step and hire real writers who have worked on books, movies, and Tv shows so that the scripts are as good as the graphics.

Funny enough, Whedon's material almost always ends happily or hopefully. People can die in the long run, but it always ends on an "up" one way or another.

AFAIK, anyway. Even Angel ended hopefully or bravely.

Actually, you know, that would've been pretty cool, if it had ended with this cycle being wiped out, and us being shown that we were actually watching the recording Liara hints at in ME3.

Yeah i like that idea.  it's kind of like an ending I wrote where if Liara wasn't your LI you would see here hundreds of years in the future telling a class of school kids(made up of all the race in one class room to show they stayed united and working together)the story of Shepard and his team.

I like your idea alot.

But Joss would have done it completely differently, and in a way that actually made sense. It would have been so much better than anything Casey Hudson or Mac Walters could have dreamed up.

Oh I know, I wasn't saying it wouldn't have made sense.  But hell, he's the only human being who can take the adorableness of Felicia Day and kill it.

Nah, I could do that too, in a heartbeat.
And I absolutely adore Felicia Day, I'm just a mean sob.

There probably would have been death in any ending done by Joss, but I think that he wouldn't have killed Shep and probably not the  LI as well.
In Serenity everyone but Wash survived, Buffy survived, same as Giles, Xander and Willow and the ending to Angel's last season was never intented to be the end of the series.

For anyone who doesn't know, Dark Horse (which also publishes the Mass Effect comics and now even Dragon AGe) are currently publishing official follow up comicbook series to both Buffy and Angel and have published Firefly comics as well, all with Joss working on the comics as well as other show writers.

Anyway, you can bet that no matter how bittersweet or sad Joss' ending would have been, it certainly would have been more fulfilling and make a lot more sense.

For the record, Whedon wouldn't have killed everyone, just Shepard's Love Interest.
