ask this again after we see what they do with the extended cut DLC. That will decide if it is the biggest disappointment of the year or game of the year for me at least. If they hadn't screwed up the ending, I would say yes, a GOTY contender.

Since the DLC is just clarification it probably won't be GOTY for a lot of people.

Not for me it isn't.

I never had any qualms about ME2 or ME1 winning GOTY awards. Yes niether game was perfect and at times I think ME2 in particular was a bit over-praised but it's undeniably still a pretty great game. I just happen to like the first one better.

Now with ME3 it's a bit of different. The combat, environments, etc. are undeniably the best I've seen in the series. But that's really ME3's only strong point. The dialogue has been reduced to a very simplistic level which was simply unnecessary. I never thought they would dumb-down their dialogue, but I guess they did. Which is odd given the whole Reputation system. So at last we get something that let's us play more neutral Shepards... but then you take the neutral option away? I have a bad feeling this was thanks to the "Action Mode" which I doubt all that many people are actually interested in.

There's a lot of sloppy animation work too. And I don't like saying that... but it's the unfortunate truth. Compared to many other current games ME3 has some really fugly looking animations. Which is odd since EA made this a selling point of games like BF3. But I guess it wasn't important for ME3. Now I'm not saying all the animations are bad. Some are done well, but I just get this impression ME3 is unfinished in many respects. However one of the more pertinent issues is just how many wonky conversations there are on the 360 version. If anything I expect the dialogue cinematics to look nice. But here I can't even count how many times I've seen Shepard "teleport" or "shift" during them. It's really rather frightening these things made their way into the final version.

Then I got to be honest about the story. While it's solid and a step up from ME2, a lot of it just has this feeling of being contrived for the sake of it. I mean some of the scenes are great. But towards the end I got the impression they were killing off characters more for convenience and less for the sake of the story. There's just a lot of unnecessary rail-roading that goes on in ME3 and it cheapens the value of it. I mean I can tell they were trying to make your previous choices matter. But really the only decisions that have any truly noteworthy impact on the game is what you did with your ME2 crewmates. Now that'd be fine with me. But there's hardly any mention of what you did involving any of the side quests from ME1 and ME2. Yes there are a few, but only a very few. I am very much shocked how few cameos they were. Heck barely even any emails. That's a noticeable step down from ME2. Then there's also the unhelpful Journal and the FedEx Quests. Not only does Shepard interact with fewer characters, but I have to go scan a planet to find their Prothean Teddy Bear? Why am I doing this stuff? And why must I use ME2's silly scanning system to boot? What was wrong with ME1's nice planetary views and press "Y" to scan?

However the biggest stickler has been this whole ending debacle. Not only were we heaviy mislead as to what to expect, but the ending is completely unsatisfying. And worst of all Bioware won't even really tell us what their DLC plans are. So you lie to us? Then you keep us in the dark to "speculate"? And you think releasing some free DLC months later is going to make everyone feel better? LOL what? I'm sorry but I don't particularily enjoy being jerked around as I have been. This is a huge slap in the face to just about every fan out there. After this whole thing I just feel like I've been betrayed. And honestly even should this "Extended Cut" be the most amazing DLC of all time I'm still unsure whether Bioware should be forgiven. For now I cannot in good conscience even suggest ME3 be a GOTY contender much in the same way I cannot recommend anyone play it at this point. To do so is basically pardoning fraudulence.

No. With all the flaws and with the ending, there's no way it is GOTY worthy. Although you can bet it'll win the GOTY from IGN (for very obvious reasons), and probably win it from a bunch of other sites that receive gift baskets full of money from EA

Wow, really?  I thought the rest of the game was stellar.

But the ending just makes GOTY impossible...well, should make it impossible.

I too personally still have some qualms with the game. Too much time spent on the Citadel searching for quest givers and too much time spent fighting Cerberus IMO. On top of that I was disappointed by the lack of consequence for some choices (rachni, collector base, human councillor) though other choices had satisfying outcomes (such as ME1's council decision). Still a good game, but not a great game.

Definitely. You can't say a game is bad because the last 5 minutes was. The rest of the game was amazing and is currently my favourite game of this year. Easily.

It's difficult to say it is with the bleeding wound that makes you feel like your choices made very little difference in determined the fate of a galaxy and the people you've grown an emotion connection to throughout the series. If the Director's Cut DLC is satisfactory, meaning emotional closure and shows us the effects of our decisions on the universe in a detailed (and maybe even inspirational) way, then absolutely. I think the hit to Bioware and EA's reputation will effect it if people are still unhappy after the DLC, but c'mon, they can't mess it up worse than they did the first time. Basically, I believe it all depends on the Director's Cut DLC and whether or not it gives us the the jaw-dropping, tear-jerking ending we all thought we'd have after three games of making extremely difficult and emotional decisions and molding relationships (BIOWARE, Y U NO GIVE ME LITTLE BLUE CHILDREN???) that added individualism to our Shepard.

Possibly. But in the same way that George W. Bush was Man of the Year 2000: Because he sparked so much controversy.

Personally I don't think so. But seeing how they've gone and changed the series so damned much to appeal to an even wider audience it probably will be.

For a game to get GOTY from me I have to love the entire experience. I can't say 'Well the game was 99% great, so it's my GOTY'. The ending was a massive, glaring fault that keeps it from reaching GOTY status.

Depends on whether they can perform a near-miracle with the "extended cut" and fix the ending, even though they won't cut anything out. I can't really see how it can be done, given the severity of some of the flaws (like a genre violation), but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Most of the game was GOTY material, but with an ending like that, I don't think the title is merited.

Absolutely- it has 75+ perfect scores from critics. Those same critics vote for most of the GOTY awards. ME3 will win MANY GOTY awards (no Red Dead Redemption to steal them like ME2).

Might be a GTA 5, if that guys C.V is to be believed.

Red Dead is awsome though and does deserves the praise.

In my opinion Diablo 3 is really over hyped product that will most likely fall flat as a pancake.

Not to mention it has the always online attachment now which has caused a fuss. No mod support will also be a big no-no for it. Personally, I'm looking more forward to Torchlight 2.

I know what you mean, I was really excited all they way until recently, about Diablo 3, but the more I learnt about it, the features etc., the more I started disliking the game. Currently have no interest towards it, whereas Torchlight 2, like you said, sounds rather interesting amongst others.

ME3 was a good game.

But if no one can produce a better game than ME3 for 2012, then it's a pretty underwhelming year for games.
