A real shame because aside from that ridiculous aspect, ME3 is an excellent game.

Are you people serious? There is no other game out there that can compere itself to the story of Mass Effect, not a single one. Yes the ending was a disappointment, yes it has some minor issues, BUT the story is so good that it makes us care, no other game out there manages to do that.
The ME3 story is not nearly as good as it could've been. The reason why people care so much is because ME1/ME2 laid the groundwork for that. Nobody would've cared much about the story if ME3 were the first game.
You people should be ashamed to call yourself ME fans.
I don't call myself that and neither am I. <_<

Maybe you don't play enough games.

The ending, among a few other details, kind of broke my enthusiasm for the game. The ending is part of the journey and if the ending is bad then that's going to stand out. The controversy surrounding the game won't be helpful either way. A nomination wouldn't be shocking, but not winning wouldn't be shocking either.
If the Extended Cut DLC succeeds in making people happy, maybe, but otherwise I think it's quite possible for another game to claim Game of the Year instead of Mass Effect 3.

If ME3 came out last year as originally intended, it still would not have won. You are not beating an Elder Scrolls game to that gong.

One of my friends from work stopped playing at Sur'kesh. I'm trying to convince him it gets a lot cooler almost immediately afterwards, but he, like me, is annoyed by the direction that the ME series took after the first entry.
So...yes, right now it's a contender. However, so far this year, it's only competition is a RPG that people say "the story sucks, but the combat is fun!", a passable squad based take on a horror series, and it's biggest competitor is an indie PSN game that most people don't even know what it's about.

Putting aside the ending (and for the last game in a trilogy the ending is worth a lot more than it would be for another game), there is a certain lack of polish compared with previous BioWare releases (DA2 aside). While you get to make some big decisions about conflicts from the previous two games, there is a lot less information presented about those conflicts than was presented in the previous two games. At some level this is understandable as you don't want to rehash everything for the veteran players, but this is also the first ME game for some players and I'm not sure that they are presented with enough information to feel the weight that their decisions bear on a fictional universe. The war assets also weren't handled that well, there should have been ramifications for your actions, as it is most of your choices ending up taking allies from one faction and adding them to another. The story path is also very linear which adversly affects the illusion of control you have over shepard (yeah, most Bioware games are on rails, but this one is on rails and in a tunnel too. This is also the shortest ME game made.
The main TPS gameplay is good and I enjoyed it, however the level design is pretty linear for the most part (N7 maps excluded) , the scanning planets/avoid the Reapers galaxy map game is laughable and the multiplayer while fun is very rudimentary.
For a AAA game, the graphics are unremarkable, they aren't bad, they aren't great, they're just middle of the road. The sound however is good. As I've said before without considering the ending I'll give the game an 8/10 with the ending I'll give it a 7/10. That's not GotY territory for me unless we have a really crappy year.

Adding the dialogue and LI improvements and fixing the character models would clinch it.

If this is your stance then it's you who should be ashamed to call yourself a gamer... For your examples of games where you don't care for story, you picked three of the best stories ever told in games. Sure, Mass Effect is good storywise, but far from the best I've played... (that honour goes to Half-Life 2) and not even the best trilogy I've played (that goes to Sands of Time and it's sequels)
