I'd like to open up by saying I'm a huge fan of RPGs, - Morrowind, NWN, Fable, Mass Effect.
With that in mind, I went out and bought this game a few days ago, expecting a pretty straight shootin, squad-based rpg. What I did not expect was the tactical combat. So I plowed through most of the game with ease (on normal for my first run) until I got to Uldrek who proceeded to wipe my party several times over.
What was not immediately apparent, and I didn't pick up early on (because much of the game is relatively easy) was the tactical nature of the game and how easy it is to build a party that is not sufficient for some battles.
Is this a gripe, or complaint, absolutely not. I'm enjoying the game immensely. Granted I threw the difficulty down to casual because my group was so out of whack with the skills that would be useful in the game, I could either reroll and just finish it out and start again on hard.
My only comment would be, that if there was any weight given to how much more strategy this game requires than the typical rpg, I missed it entirely.
Now, back to slaying things so I can finish up and run it again!

Well people who know Bioware knew it was going to be a spiritual successor to BG2.
EA's marketing had other ideas, perhaps justifiably (probably tons of gamers who've never heard of BG2

They always marketed the game as having tactical combat, but I agree that the trailers made the game out to be more action oriented like Mass Effect. Quite frankly though, I don't think that approach hurt the game at all. All the hardcore players knew what the game was and those that didn't got interested and tried it out. Sure there's maybe a small subset of players who thought the game would be action based and were disappointed but there's likely an equally large subset of people who were introduced to the tactical combat and are enjoying it.

You can definately make the game tough by making some bad choices when leveling characters. I have found this particularly noticable on my characters that I don't use too much and put 3 or so levels on at a time.
My second toon was far more successful as I knew what I was doing.
