Humor need not take away from a dark and gloomy tone.

But it does. Kind of by definition.

Can't be focused on how dire the situation is when I have some joke to laugh at ever 20 minutes. In DA:O it almost felt like the really bleak situations were the brief ones, whereas the jokes were never in short supply. If the world is supposed to be in danger, I'd like to feel like the world is in danger throughout the game. And let the funny bit be the brief break in that, rather than the other way around.

Assassin's Creed 2 had some missions set during Carnevale. It was a nice change up to the gameplay. It wasn't a new map or location, just a period of time where everyone was dressed in costume and partying.

I dont know.I have not had problems with Biowares jesting and easter eggs in DAO,but I suppose it is best if it is kept at bay and not overdone. Just like real life,I suppose.Sometimes we laugh or are being sarcastic(as I prefer to do) just to be able to cope with it all.Is not the clown the saddest and most clairvoyant of them all?Humor need not take away from a dark and gloomy tone.
But just because the main questline takes us to a street carnival, not everything will have to be about going silly nutters - assassinations and kidnappings happen on such occasions, after all. But it would be a great opportunity to see the NPCs act maybe even OOC-or out of THE character we assigned to them up until that point-and could lead to some either tragic or amusing revelations about your followers.

Yeah, just because it's a light hearted setting bad stuff can still happen. There's always going to be something dark or seedy going on where large crowds gather... especially in somewhere like Orlais.

I guess it would depend on how Bioware approached the concept. It could start out light hearted but take a sudden turn for the worst, for example, the festival is attacked and many people die or your PC gets abducted and taken to a dungeon to be beaten and tortured (those are crap ideas but you get where I'm coming from.)

You have a point there, but we forgot to define the kind of humour being used.Sarcastic or cynical?Silly jesting with lecherous references, like Oghrens can be?Just think of the best standup comedians - if the humour used serves to illuminate a great truth,or to deal with a sensitive issue (imagine a companion who finds it hard to speak of something important, and tries to take away the awkwardness of the situation),it could actually enhance the gloomy feel.Just like shadows seem darker in the corner of a brightly lit room.

And the candle in a dark room seems brighter than flood lights.

I like Lolalei's suggestion that it could be integrated into the running theme of the story. Not unlike what I've been talking about with the Gold Saucer example.

I really want a masquerade ball event, with flatteringly designed party costumes for the main character/companions. Preferably involving Empress Celene, such as having to mingle with nobles and ask the right Investigate questions to learn the identity of an assassin at the event, and then tail them without being discovered.

MotA tried to do this, but it fell flat. I want a masquerade ball in a Val Royeaux ballroom that looks and feels ostentatious and spectacular, and is filled with people dancing, not just standing around in groups of three.

Assassin's Creed 2 carnival is a perfect example of the type of setting I'd like to see in DA3. Imagine you PC and companions running around in a town/city like this during the day and evening:

I've suggested on the thread "masquerade ball" that it could be a great intro for DA3. Same goes for this thread.

These kind of things have many possibilities for a story. Could be my suggestion or a diversion from the main plot or something inbetween: doing side things but you have to be there to progress the story.

Perfect analogy.I never once suggested that the silliness go overboard:)^_^I agree with the above suggestion also.I merely meant to point out that the right kind of humour should be used in the right amount to strike a good balance.DA2 was too much for me,too. In something like the Bard`s Tale, which is a mockery of the genre itself,or Fable, which is not even an RPG by any definition of the word,it is fine:):o

Woah, this looks amazing, makes me wish the DA series had better graphics, but I guess I'd rather have a good story. This would be so fun, now I'm really hoping for a partyish thing in DA3

Could probably impliment both, the festival being for the common/regular folk and in the evening a masquerade ball is held for the upper class citizens. Especially if the festivies being held are a celebration of some past event within the dragon age/Thedas lore or whatever.

CENIC: The setting could drastically change depending on whether it's day or night. During the day things could be more mellow, people browsing market stalls and watching street entertainers, then by night things become more fast paced with drunk people staggering around, evening entertainment, dancing etc. The art style could change drastically too with lanterns lighting up the area and fireworks (if fireworks even existed back then?) etc.
