Mass Effect 1 is the only game so far that brings my entire PC down. Before or after a cut scene the game crashes the pc so hard, that the screen becomes black, some permanent sound comes out of the speakers and that's it. When I do a reset, then the screen doesn't get recognized, ie it remains black. I have to totally turn the pc off.

I can play Rage, I can Play Arkham Asylum smoothly. But this old game doesn't run.

On a side note the screen resolution didn't go beyond 720p. I figured that I had to start ME as admin and only then can I go higher with the screen resoltuion.

Specs:

OS: Win7 x64
DX: DirectX 11
GPU: Nvidia GTX 560TI
CPU: i7-2600 3.4GHz
MEM: 16GB
HD: 200GB free
SND: Realtek OnBoard

ME version: german, using english language output. Applied patch 1 and 2.

Does anyone have an idea of what's happening? I don't get a bsod and I don't see anything in the system event log. I tried various Nvidia drivers, even the latest. Always the same. After ~ 10 mins the game crashes my sys. And that happens usually before or after a cut scene.

Thanks a lot for the help!

ME-1 is three years old. There is a relatively narrow "window" of Geforce drivers that have always worked with it, between 2 1/2 years ago, and 1 1/2 years ago.

Thanks. But is there a way to determine if the Geforce drivers are even causing this? I tried those from november 2011 and the most current ones. Changing the drivers didn't seem to have a positive effect. And I can't find any erros in the event logs. It's very strange.

If you haven't tried the drivers numbered 258-something, you missed the correct slot for the short time nVIDIA managed to include ME-1 among the games they cared to be compatible with.

Thanks, but I'm really not in the mood to install a different gfx driver for every game i play.

However, I read this here:

Seems to be the same problem. After a bit of investigation on a different perspective it turned out that the gfx card may be the culprit. Unfortunately I have a Zotac and Zotac doesn't offer a problem-solving bios update. You can read a lot of the same issue on the Zotac forum.

I'll get a new gfx card.
