ME1: Tired of biotics

So I've played through the entire trilogy a few times only using the adept and vanguard. From a gameplay standpoint, I love the biotic classes. My shotgun bastion adept was by far the most fun I ever had playing Mass Effect. Charging into a room, lifting every enemy up in the air, and getting them all stuck in a stasis bubble that they'll never leave.

Now I want to move on and choose a class based on lore and RPG reasons rather than gameplay without getting shafted on NG+ Insanity. I'm only considering the 3 non-biotic classes for ME1: soldier, engineer, infiltrator. I could sure use some help and clarification (lol) regarding those classes and builds for them.

Soldier

Pros
  • supposedly the easiest class
  • lots of gun variety
  • immunity looks amazing
Cons
  • boring
  • popular
  • Ash isn't as useful when you're already a soldier
Engineer

Pros
  • I study engineering and love tech stuff (RPing here)
  • can bring along different squaddies since I open all the boxes
  • just a pistol... again
Cons
  • tired of casting classes
  • supposedly the hardest class
  • no defensive boosting abilities
Infiltrator

Don't really know too much about it in ME1. Is it just a glorified sniping class with some tech abilities? Is it really a nice hybrid between the two aforementioned classes?

Dissapointed that you're tired of biotics (especially with your signature being adepts united).

I love adepts and vanguards but don't really play sentinels.

I played engineer on ME 1 and they aren't as fun as they were in ME 2 & 3. Your best bet is to go with the infiltrator. They are a fantastic combination of tech and combat abilities.

Engineer is fun but a little bit tough. Soldier's only redeeming feature is CARNAGE. The rest of teir abilities are boring. Really boring. They're more fun in Mass Effect 2&3 because the shooting really improved.

Infiltrator is the best of the three by a long shot. You'll want tech abilities but also some good shooting for back up. Even as an adept (my favourite class) I brought a sniper rifle. Mass Effect 1 is more forgiving if you're a sniper because enemies have will stay still. In Mass Effect 2 & 3, unles you use tech and biotic powers, sniping is a tough task.

Bring your Infiltrator along. It was my first successful playthrough.

Infiltrator is probably "better than Soldier" and really is a Soldier with better rifle skills and tech if you take AR training as your bonus power.  Infiltrator might be my favorite ME1 class, or at least tied with Soldier.  I sort of got tired lifting everything under the sun or suns with Adept.

Either way should be good. New game insanity for a Soldier isn't all that fun early unless you really know what you are doing with your guns and grenades, or you spec and use your squad correctly. Lot's of people think Engineer is the weakest class in ME1. Maybe it is. I agree that it isn't as good as in ME2 and ME3.

Between the Soldier and Infiltrator it comes down to the Tech Talents.

Also, the Infiltrator can rock with any squad combo with the 9 points of investment in Decryption and Electronics. And taking AI Hacking pretty much can make you a tough Commando (Engineer) Infiltrator.

As the Soldier you would need to take either Decryption or Electronics and then bring at least one squadmate to cover the other Talent you don't have on Shepard, so that leaves less combos for all of the containers you come across.

And you really don't need to have the Shotgun or Assault Rifle as a talent and the Infiltrator has good bonuses to Pistols and Sniper Rifles, since you can still use them without zooming.

So basically, the Infiltrator is gonna be the best out of the three from both its solid utility and survivability, especially with AI Hacking to lower cooldowns on Tech Talents. Damping is really sweet to use often for example too.

And check this out: ME1 Talent Calculator

Here's a reasonable lvl. 60 build suggestion with the Infiltrator you can try.
12 - Fitness
08 - Pistols
12 - Sniper Rifles
07 - Tactical Armor
09 - Decryption
09 - Electronics
11 - Hacking
12 - Damping
06 - First Aid
12 - Commando
00 - Charm
00 - Intimidate
04 - Spectre Training

I don't know why the Engineer gets such a bad rap in ME1, it is my favorite class if I want an easy play through! The play-style is emphasized by insanity though, where it is clear that your endless supply of tech grenades don't do effective damage. What they do is lock your opponents down so that you can take them down with conventional weapons. One nice thing for the engineer is that the different tech powers bonuses affect each other - each grenade power up affects the other grenade types. My engineer feels very powered down on ME2!

That said, this means the engineer is very much a caster class that you are trying to move on from, and a slower one than biotics at that - engineers don't have many powers to let you charge in guns blazing.

Soldier is surprising fun as heavy armor, high hit points and the invulnerability power (with adrenaline rush for an instant recharge) mean you can simply charge most things and live with the consequences at higher levels. The early parts of the citadel can be brutal on insanity though, if playing from level 1.

The inherent problem with an Engineer is just that if you give an Infiltrator the AI Hacking bonus, it becomes an insurmountably more powerful and flexible version of an Engineer. Seriously, it makes an Engi completely obsolete unless you want to intentionally give yourself a handicap, since playing as an Infiltrator is just as easy (if not easier) as playing as a Soldier or Bastion Adept.

Ha, the two turian assassins outside of Chora's Den, right?

That part totally sucks as Soldier if you don't have Kaidan with you to just Lift them.  If you do then they are potentially instakilled.  It is a very drastic difference in difficulty.  Actually I was pretty annoyed when I finally went to get my Kaidan ally achievement at how easy it was that way.  Without him you are trying to burn through their immunity with garbage weapons.  Grenades are very important.

Same with Therum early, if you are stubborn and don't take Kaidan there (say because you like Garrus and Tali better) that fight is pretty rough.  But it is doable with some nice debuff rounds (Like Chemical I or whatever you have) and clutch grenade use.
