A little background on me: I love this series. I love sci-fi. Things like Star Trek and Mass Effect are what inspired me to study Aerospace Engineering. Having played all three games till my eyes bled, and getting all the DLC I could get my hands on, as well as reading all the books and comics, I thought I'd give my feedback for the developers and writers.
There are a lot of folks disappointed with the endings, but I thought they were alright, and in any case I'm not going to waste my time with things you guys have already heard. Instead, I'd like to focus on the series as a whole with what I liked and didn't, and what I personally would like to see in the next ME universe game. You may have heard it before, but hopefully I can offer you one more statistic in your customer feedback.
Things that I saw as Improvements and un-improvements
- The combat system in mass effect was bad. It was difficult to tell what exactly my powers were doing. This was greatly improved in the next 2 games. Additionally the "feel" of aiming my weapon was bad in ME1 and improved as well.
- The ME2 weapon system was 100x better than ME1, though I'm sure yall have head that 1000 times. Although, I prefer the ME2 system over ME1 and ME3. I feel like the modifications for the ME3 weapons was a step back to the ME1 system. It complicated things too much for me.
- I liked the improvement with the ME2 vehicle (hammerhead). The ME1 system of driving forever on a square mile of terrain was painstaking. That being said, I am sad the hammerhead didn't make it into ME3. I feel like there was too much infantry combat and not enough vehicle combat. Or at least not enough driving. The vehicular combat seemed, well, generic.
- Incorporating Kahlee Sanders and Kai Leng into the series was a great idea to reward the fans of the novels. My only qualm with that is I feel we didn't get enough of Kahlee. But the amount of Kai Leng we got was perfect I think. Though Grayson's daughter would have been a nice touch (good idea for DLC).
- In ME1, we got to choose either udina or anderson for the coucilor, but that ended up working out the same way regardless. I feel as though there should have been another plot branch-off for that where anderson remained councilor.
- This isn't anyone's fault but EA's, however the Kingdom's of Amalur / ME3 demo cross DLC was full of technical errors. I never got mine due to some stupid EA glitch. Their customer service said they saw the error but could do nothing about it. They sent off a ticket to get a higher level customer assistance technician to fix it but it didn't get fixed until after the deadline.
- I didn't like the ME3 'passive' mode for when you resolve conflicts with people in places like on the citadel. I would have preferred the method from the previous two games where the camera angle changes to focus on the conversation. I just didn't feel engaged with the people I was resolving arguments between.
- Planet scanning in ME3 took too long. I don't mean the scan when the reapers come, I mean when you find something on the planet and you are scanning the planet - the mouse cursor moves too slow. Crank up the sensitivity/speed on that thing.
- The fuel upgrade for the ship in ME2 should have been imported into ME3. I didn't much care for finding extra fuel in debris fields.
- Earth at the beginning of the game was perfect. Earth at the end of the game didn't seem like Earth. I just felt like I was on any old planet. I wasn't engaged in the fight, I didn't feel like my existence was at stake. I'm not sure why, and I guess I don't have any suggestions, but it just didn't feel like the final fight.
- I feel like the citadel should have been bigger. I liked the citadel in ME1 the most, because you could walk from place to place. In ME3, you had to take the elevator. Without that continuity, the scale of the size of the citadel just wasn't there, I didn't feel it.
- Novels are usually written in first or third person. Second person isn't that popular. However, what would have been cool is if the novels and comics were in second person (a la genesis dlc style), and those would create additional plot elements to be incorporated into the games. So you would import your save game from mass effect 1/2 as well as an additional file from a second person novel. Now this may create headaches for the writers, but if it was implemented correctly it would have been a cool idea. With technology today, especially with kindles and nooks, I'm surprised second person novels haven't taken off.
- On that same note, it would be cool to have a side-line story where you play as someone else, say thane on his assasinations, or legion trying to find shepard or something. Then their save games would be imported along with the main save game. Again this is a plot and writing headache but would have been cool. Now the way I see it, you all still have the option to do something similar. For example, release another ME game where you play short missions as each of the other characters. e.g. miranda, thane, tali, etc. But the game imports the ME1 storyline. So it is a parallel game to ME2, but the plot branches would have to stay in that game since it's too late to import them into ME2 or ME3.
- An ME3 MMORPG would be awesome.
- Following that other note, if yall were to do it all over again, you could go both ways and have the decisions made in the game be imported into a e-novel as well. I suppose this could still be done... although it would first require the development of software to do second person books like I was talking about.
