Since you didn't name your current video card, or any other PC components, not even your OS version, you do not seem at all anxious for an answer.  Here is the information on the warning label (with my edited caution) you could have looked at:

Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (either this is wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater (or this one is wrong)
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space

Preliminary diagnostic information

PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems.  There is almost nothing that is truly "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and resulting in warning labels attached to game boxes for those games that have serious requirements.

In case you have misunderstood how to evaluate your PC compared to that game box label, we have to start from here.  Fill it all in.

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon 64 / Pentium / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed:  ?.? Ghz (or AMD Performance Number)
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Vista ? (Oh, no!)
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024)
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 3650 / Geforce 8600 GT
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.??
. . . (use numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

The usual culprit for this error message is an Intel (CRAP) video chip!

At least we'll know whether you have the opportunity to upgrade (you saw the last sentence I wrote above, correct?)

This is the correct place that your added information belonged, and you should edit the new one to nothing more than a sentence about it being a duplicate, that a moderator can delete when time for house cleaning is available.

right now is an Intel® GMA 3100 or Intel® G33/G31 express chipset
family. that's what it says on the dxdiag thing. the system i have is
Vista as well.

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Name / Type: Intel ® core 2 quad processor/ Q6600
Processor Speed:  I don't know
Operating System / Service Pack: Vista (Service Pack 1 is required)
System RAM: 4GB
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: Intel
Video Card Model: Intel® GMA 3100 (it won't work for gaming)
Video Card Driver Version: 7.14.0010.1329
Video Card onboard RAM:286 MBs (an Intel video chip cannot have dedicated VRAM)
Sound Card Manufacturer: I don't know
Sound Card Model: I don't know

Assuming this is a desktop PC in a "normal" tower enclosure, not a slimline hotbox, you need at least an HD 4650

Here's one of those for $35 after rebate:  www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

If you have a laptop, you'll need either a different, much simpler kind of game, or a replacement PC, because that would not be an upgrade option for such a laptop (made with only an IGP).

If you want to refer to the abysmal capability of such a POS as "playing", you exaggerate horrendously.

The interim message, regarding Dx10, could have been the problem right there.  This game requires Dx9, not Dx10, and if you did not have both of them, the game could not run.

Replace that antique old GPU right away. It was designed six years ago, as a very basic, very minimal business graphics device, not even as good as the current onboard video chips of its own time (other than Intel's previous to the i3 / i7 combined CPU & IGP, old onboard junk). The object at the time, I believe, was to get the cost down to a minimum, leaving out as much as possible.  It's another in the series of incarnations of the Radeon 9550 SE, which had been the least useful of the Radeon 9n00 generation's Dx9.0"a" cards.

Here is a very good PCIe card for $50 after rebate:

www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

For anyone running a search, if you actually have the right video card, but the games is telling you otherwise, look to the linkages of three softwares that interact.. one is broken now.  Start from the graphics driver, reinstall it, and retest.  Next, reinstall Dx9, not Dx10, and not Dx11, and retest.  Last, uninstall the game and reinstall it.

(P. S. added in edit 2-24-2011 -- occasionally, this error message is triggered from mixing up screen ratio settings between wide screen and standard 4:3 ratios.  Be sure you are starting out from a resolution that matches your display's ratio.)

Hi,

Realise that this is an old thread, but it seemed more sensible than starting a whole new one. I was running DA:O / DA:A fine, with no graphical issues at all, a couple of months ago. I haven't altered my system other than to install DA2 (which also works fine for the most part), but now it's giving me a "no supported video card" error when I try to run the game. The config utility doesn't detect a problem. I'll include my graphic card details, but I haven't altered them since the last time it worked. ><

The last comment in this thread that I see is five days old now, but I just had to reload FireFox, and for some odd reason, it's loaded this message thread.  If there has not been any newer comment, the only thing that comes to mind is the too- careless nature of some Microsoft automatic updates.  I don't believe in giving them that kind of freedom to mess with my machines.  Have you somehow failed to understand the dangers inherent in doing that?

Your problem could very well have come from that vector.  {Edited to eliminate the typo caused by my "fat" fingers (clumsy, anyway).}
