Hi everyone, I tried playing Mass Effect back in 2010 logging about 30 hours. I was having fun somewhat, but I ultimately gave up for two reasons:
1.) I didn't know what I was doing. I'd never played a tactical game ever; I was just into run and gun first person shooters which ME is not. So I spent much of the time saying what the frick am I doing. Well I think I could take a fresh approach to the whole ME series since I learned how to play tactic based game by finishing Dragon Age Origins 3 times logging approximately 500 hours (lol) I taught myself to play tactic based games.
2.) Honestly, and this is nitpicking here, I didn't like the guns. Overall it seemed to me that the weapons were weak but that is probably because I come from an FPS background.
Anyway, I thought ME might just be awesome if I took a different approach and mindset into the game. Everyone's always telling me how awesome ME2 and now ME3 are and it really makes me curious.....actually...it makes me want to play the whole series.
Do you think I should give ME1 another try so that I can prepare for ME2 and ME3?
Thanks for any input.
Should I give Mass Effect another try?

I was hoping to be able to upgrade my weapons, which I think you can, as well as upgrading certain proficiency on certain weapons...I'll never know if I don't play it though..

Bump : ) Do the weapons get better later on in the game, or is that not the point?

Yea the weapons do get better. Eventually when you get the "rich achievement" you get access to the spectre weapons, which pretty much are the best weapons. Problem is you loot so many weapons its a bit of a hassle always comparing them and seeing which one is better. You kinda just have to pay attention to the names of the weapons.
As for upgrades you have like weapon attachments that slow down your gun overheating, weapon stabilizers, etc etc.
Should you play me1? I think so, just for the knowledge however, i think its cool to see me1 consequences in me2 however small they may be.
The mechanics of the game are sloppy and frustrating compared to me2, me3. It really isnt as tactical as you think, your squadmates are morons in combat and act as cannon fodder/need to be constantly revived, and the only remotely tactical thing is to use power combinations for crowd control.
But I think you know this since u played 30 hours, lemme know if you need any more info
