Why not stick with one protagonist for the next installment of DA 3 ?

I like character connections. I like seeing their struggle over multiple games. One reason I like Mass Effect so much. You get a emotional bond with characters. You care about them.

I didn't give a damn about one character in DA2. If they had somebody like Allistair or Morrigan, it probably would be a different story. DA2's "emotional" moments were also incredibly awkward. When somebody died, everyone reacted lifelessly. When you unite with Bethany again after years...she was like a robot standing there. Where is the family love?

But yes, a protagonist we already know would be better. I like seeing other characters too but you just can't strike a bond with them. Take Mass Effect for example, I know Shepard. I can relate more and it makes the choices harder to do. You grab a emotional bond.

The best thing for the serie is to have a new main character for every game.

DAO we had the warden
DA2 we had Hawke
DA3 we will have ? (probably a seeker from what I read on the forum)

Who or what the protagonist is is in my opinion not important as long as the story and her/his character is great.

Are you saying we won't be able to play dalish in DA3? I dought any true dalish will join the chantry rank and be a seeker but hey am probably wrong, da is the world with alot of.. how to say without causing a mental injury to the writers.. inconsistencies, thats right! Meh I am sure DA3 is a human base game again, oh I can't wait for the Bchin and whines!

Hmm DA3 should cost $19.99 because that way it will appear different from the am hurt $60 dollards post that  we got for a wholeFing year.:wizard::wizard:

Wait!!!! Canada is getting rid of the 1 cent coins .. make it $19.95![smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/kissing.png[/smilie][smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/kissing.png[/smilie]

This exactly, and it bears repeating.

I like the different protagonist in every game, since it basically means we get a whole new game with a different story, only set in the same world. The main issue I think is one they created for themselves. Including DLC for Origins, they left too many things hanging. The same applies to Hawke. I think if people felt they had more closure for their character there would be fewer threads like this popping up.

I don't see why having the same protagonist for more than one game and DA being about the setting as a whole are mutually exclusive. Both the main protagonists so far just fell into their stories, they were in the right place at the right time, what's stopping that happening to one of them again?

I'm satisfied with a new protagonist each time, but I think I'd enjoy playing a former protagonist again more, if only once. I'd prefer a character whose back-story I know, who already has connections out in the world, but where these things aren't just handed to me on a plate at the start of the game.

I don't mind new protagonists, I think the only reason DA2 felt more disjointed compared to DA:O was because DA2 felt rushed and wasn't as indepth as DA:O.

There are a lot of people who want to choose the race for their main character. I suggested on another thread that doing a bit for everybody (read a bit, you will never ever satisfy everybodys needs) introduce back the origins story so you can play another race in the game even if its just for introducing things in the story or explaning certain events that will take place.
I really liked playing a dwarve and an elf but it will all depend on BW's main storyline and how other races could be connected/played out in it.

I'm VERY ok with a new main for every game. We get to see the 'world' this way. Not just one persons life. Plus, it has more opportunity to continue as a game. We could end up wit DA17 lmao, who knows. Where as something like ME was only meant to have 3 games.

The advantage to having a new protagonist in each game is that you don't need to invent a reason to reset them to Level 1 in new titles. Plus, there's less background information to worry about, which is important when considering the choices people may have made in an RPG.

Having different protagonists per game is fine, they just need to make sure they finish the pc's story in the game rather than relying on DLC to do it for them.

I wouldn't really have a problem playing a different character in a DA game as long as they wrap up the PC's stories. I expected my Warden's story to be over with by the time DA 2 came around. The only Wardens that got some type of closure to their characters were the people that made the sacrifice, the Orlisian Warden, and the Wardens that romanced Morrigan. Then we have Hawke....See what I'm getting at?

Rather have a new protagonist every game with a gripping story where choises matter and full closure at the end in the Thedas world. Trying to end a story arc after 3 games like in ME series is not the way to go. Offiously they bit more off then they could chew and should learn from that. Interesting tibits can be highlited out and made a dlc off or if they feel very confident in their product as a full addon.

We've jumped from The Warden (our favourite), to Hawke, and 99% likely to take on another individual in the next game. Does anyone else feel like its a huge immersion breaker 'leapfrogging' between primary characters ? It feels like the series loses its focus and depth it has the potential to achieve.

I mean, exactly which direction is DA going in, or is Bioware winging it as each story comes ?

What do you guys think, should there be continuity in out protagonist, or does switching roles make more sense from a storytelling perspective, a la Song of Ice and Fire style ?

It was stated before DAO's release that there would be a different character every game and that the story is about Thedas, not the Warden and this has been repeatedly stated time and time again, so i can only conclude you have been living in a cave since DAO's release or that you just like asking rhetorical questions for kicks.

So if not playing the Warden ad infinitum is a deal breaker for you then I'd suggest you go play something else like say erm Mass Effect oh wait you cant because the killed Sheppard in ME3 oh well.........

I don't think it's necessary to stick with one protagonist for multiple games, but I wish they would make the new protagonist proactive so that he doesn't seem to be an incompetent buffoon who can't be bothered to do anything without someone telling him to handle it. And if they could try to avoid letting the protagonist allow villains to simply walking away while the protagonist stands idly by like a piece of furniture, that would be appreciated.

I prefer having a different character each story, my Warden sacrificed herself to end the blight, her story has ended.

Having a different character each story allows for that story to be told from beginning to end in the same game, lowers the chance of retcons.

This.

Although you were arguably able to get rather definitive closure about what happened to the Warden through one of the ending choices in DA:O (although not what happened to a certain Orlesian who might have stepped into their shoes).

That said, people don't always like definitive endings, because...well, they can be a bit rubbish when it all winds up in a bit of an anticlimax or gets straightjacketed. Fortunately, Bioware have never put their fans in a situation where everyone's protagonist ends up with a virtually identical ending irrespective of the choices that the player made in the game up to that point.

*ahem*

Would anyone like a blue cupcake?

They've said from the beginning. Dragon Age is about Dragon Age, it isn't about anyone in Dragon Age. It looks at Warden and Hawke because they were there when these events happened in Dragon Age. It is about events, not people.

I would have liked to play as The Warden again. But I don't want to play as Hawke again. The Warden was no errand boy or just a sidekick to Anders. The Warden rocked.

I felt that Hawke's story did not have a fair end, but the Warden's did. There was no cliffhanger, but a more definitive epilogue of "you lived in Denerim with Leliana, you went travelling with Zevran, you returned to Par Vollen with Sten" would have been nice to limit the idea it was unfinished as much as possible. Yes, the Warden still lived, but his story was over. One could also argue that with the destruction of Kirkwall, the Champion's story was also over, but the cliffhanger was more prominent because it never said what exactly Hawke did after Kirkwall.

Whereas in my case, every time I see a bandwagon, I jump on it.

This. Cliffhangers are cool sometimes, but don't do them for all the characters.
