Unexpected consequences

So, what I'd like to see moving forward:
* Morally ambiguous dilemmas that make us really think and puzzle things out
* Quests where there aren't always perfect solutions
* More quests where you maybe need to side with a bad person for the greater good
* Seeing the impact of such choices within the game (not just cosmetic changes)

How can you think about an unexpected consequence while making a choice? It's unexpected.

Damn...
You got me.
I meant more thinking hard about what the implications of making a certain choice may be, or more morally ambiguous situations where it's hard to see the right and wrong thing, but I do see your point.

I'll explain how I mean this.
If Harrowmont takes the throne the dwarves will act isolated politics. Dwarves control the lyrium so communication between topside and Orzammar will be difficult.
If Bhelen takes the throne there will be open trade with the topside.
If DA3 is about mage/templar war that decision is very important hence you can import it or choose it at the beginning of the game.
This could be about making moral choises. In case of Harrowmont maybe a war to get to the lyrium, in case of Bhelen maybe which side Orzammar takes in the mage/templar war.

In relation to this thread I made, I got to thinking about the exact consequences of choices we were given. Even those that had an impact on the game (in both Origins and DAII) had pretty obvious outcomes. I'm not always against this, but what I want is once in a while, is a real moral dilemma that really makes me think. There shouldn't always be a third option where everything turns out alright for everyone (but in other cases, yes, I think there should). The only quest that comes to mind in relation to this is A Paragon of Her Kind, where putting the "good guy" (in this case Harrowmont) on the throne turned out to have mostly negative consequences. However, the only impact this had was a few lines of text in an epilogue slideshow post-game.

Maybe a big decision you made in DA2 could transfer over to DA3 with serious consequences.
Like, if you sided with the Mages then there could be a serious complications in the new game where the Mages have pretty much taken over and are out of control, using blood magic to the extreme and are slaughtering innocent victims to conduct sick experiments etc, and if you sided with the Templars then they have begun abusing their power even further, slaughtering mages on sight, torturing them, raping them etc but on a grander scale than what was going on in the Gallows in DA2, maybe Cullen's gone mad with power too and is ruling with an iron fist (like his original epilogue in DA:O.)
Something like that which shows your choices have severe repercussions. (Although the Templar/Mage thing is probably a bad example since you have to pick one or the other in DA2.)

Even simple things like that Magistrate in Magistrate's Orders actually SHOWING UP again at some point later would be nice. Dude threatened you and then disappeared. Did he forget he was mad?
Heck, even an outright anti-climax like "later that year, he choked on an amuse-bouche and died" would be SOMETHING.

I'd sure like to see more things come back to bite you later--and not 3 whole GAMES later, either. It'd be nice, also, if occasionally things come back to bite you in such a way that you wind up having to justify your original decision to angry people. That would be cool.

Oh well, maybe I'm pettying on all here but that quest was a real bummer. When I was in the thaig thinking about what consequenses my decision would have on the main story I might as well wouldn't have bothered.
The thing that did come out of it was money (letter from elven dad) and the knowledge that the girl you saved wanted to become a guard when she grew up. It wasn't a fedex quest and to be honest there was some moral dilemma (killing the dude or not). But some outcome from the fruit cake's dad later in the game that have some influence would have been nice.
