I would have enjoyed a good boss fight.  I also would have enjoyed a deep, thought-provoking, mentally stimulating ending.

What kind of people enjoy ****-filled endings?  I just want to know what category the OP puts himself in, is all.

I dont understand why we can get a satisfying boss fight followed by a deep, thought-provoking, mentally stimulating ending

For the first time we've played an interactive simulation that presents us with a challenge that far exceeds the limits of the character we're playing.  So we're forced to compromise instead of getting our own way (like a spoiled kid).

I'm 32 years old. I've been to war, dealt with more than a couple life or death situations, and made sacrifices for loved ones that people just shouldn't have to make. I've been to 5 different continents, interacted with people of many different nationalities and religions, and read heavily from religious and philosophical texts from all over the world. I am a very cultured, very mature adult. I am not at all uncomfortable with thought provoking, mentally stimulation situations, and I wanted a boss fight.

I don't play many video games. I bought one game between ME2 and ME3 and it was a strategy game. I play video games because they are fun, because they are a light hearted and simple minded escape from real life. I don't NEED a video game to feel mature or deep. I already know I am. For some people, those who make video games their life, an occasional detour into realms of deep thought may seem like a fun excursion, a mental exercise that you can reflect upon, and then tell yourself, (and anyone on the forums who will listen) how mature you are for liking it.

Some of us, however, already live our lives in deep thought in a very real and very mentally stimulating world. When we play video games, we want the hero to ride of into the sunset, or, if it fits the theme of the game, to make a heroic sacrifice that illustrates the positive traits that are far too uncommon in the real world.

So don't come here and tell me that I am a child for wanting a boss fight at the end of a game, because when all is said and done. I'm going to put down the controller and go back to the real world where you can't face down the embodiment of all your problems and defeat them once and for all, whereas you are just going to start on another game, and get some other happy ending somewhere else.

Read this in the Morgan-Freeman-end-of-Shawshank voice. Hats off, sir/ma'am.

I agree to a point, I don't need or want a boss fight. Saren was mediocre, the human reaper just ridiculous, and ME3 gave us that terrible JRPG guy. I totally agree that I like a thought provoking, philosophical ending, and I actually liked the style of ME3's ending up to the very last 2 minutes that ruined most of it again. Still, the main problem is that it doesn't make sense, that there are too many problems, plotholes, loose ends that you have no idea what really happened, happens, etc. Nothing of it is the least satisfying or just a clear end at all, it just ends as a big "WTF".
So, on one hand the ending does get the most style points of all the Mass Effect games from me, but on the other hand it was still so badly executed that I wholeheartedly support the Retake movement (or, preferable, IT). I don't want another stupid bossfight, gawd no.

I liked the idea of no boss fight, there is nothing wrong with a boss fight, but not having a boss fight was a nice change of pace. Sadly they didn't deliver a deep thought provoking ending, instead the story ending was a failure from a literary standpoint.

Making the story dark didn't make it deep, there are plenty of dark stories that are considered well written (Anyone ever read the Bartemous trilogy? That had a very bittersweet ending, but in that case it was beautiful because of the parallels it draws.) Even Bioware proved they could do sad and deep, (A La Mordin) but the ending isn't beautiful in any way shape or form, it just come off as slipshod and not thought out.

So to sum this up, they catered to a good idea, but in the wrong way.

I already did that in Red Dead Redemption. And you know what? Rockstar didn't muck it up!

I dont need a boss fight, in-fact I'm fine without one. Saying a boss fight would have been "too videogamey" in a video game is just silly though and I'm sorry to say comes off as been pretentious.

Although I can't say I've faced so much in my life as this guy... I love this post.

A fellow Tarkovsky fan!

No offense OP, but I am well over the age of 30 and the ending is nonsensical, faux-artistic crap.  The only thing that could have made it worse would have been to add a dancing midget.

When waffles get soaked with syrup, they get more awesome. Pancakes just kinda get soggy.

Guys, I know I can't stop bringing up numbers, but here it goes again:

Since when is a 13 year old part of the MTV generation?

That 13 year old is now in their thirties.

Tarkovsky's Solaris had a midget and it's will always be infinetly greater than the ending we have now. Seriously if feels like the bastard child of Tarkovsky that has NONE of the talent.
