ME1 and dragon age origins are two of my favourite games ever then they started making their games more streamlined to attract a wider audience which I can't blame them for doing.

And you forgot unlimited ammo.

To limited extent there is unlimited ammo supply in ME2-3. Plus PR.

Lorik Qui'in wasn't on the list.

He is the most interesting man in the Universe.

According to my "acquaintance", who is even more Astronomy nerd than I'm gun-nerd, ME1 planets were pictured mostly fine. He almost chew my ear off, explaining all that, but since I'm not Astronomy guy, I didn't get most of his explanations. But I trust his judgment, so I'm fine with planets. And even their "dense population".

The only time combat worked in the first game was when I had a sufficiently upgraded sniper rifle to blast away Sergeant Stirling with one exploding round as soon as she'd finished mouthing off at me.

Stasis/Singularity works too.

Never tried that, I never really got the hang of biotics and combos until ME3 :(

I'm fairly astronomically nerdy and it wasn't that that bothered me, just the sameiness. Same buildings stuck randomly in the middle of nowhere, the only rocks happened to be large concentrations of something interesting and so on. The first few planets I visited actually did impress me with their other world feelings, it was only a bit later I started getting rather bored with them.

The only point I can see is the first one, maybe.  There is less wide open emptiness in the second and third games, though that is a subjective thing.  Some people like the open feel, others hate emptiness.  Meh.

Explosive rounds are still there, at least in ME3.  Max out your Incendiary ammo skill and explosive is one of the evolutions.  No it doesn't function the same way, but it is still ridiculously powerful, especially with a rapid-fire weapon.

The inventory made no sense whatsoever in ME1.  How can you carry and access all of this equipment (up to 150 pieces!) just anywhere?  In ME2 it made sense because you carried weapons on your back, and nothing else.  Schematics on your omni-tool allowed you to create weapons at weapon lockers and thus switch weapons, but even then you can't change your armor out in the field.  As it should be.  With the return of weapon mods, Bioware wanted to keep modability balanced, and you could only mod at a bench, or when starting a mission.  This requires foresight in what weapons, mods, and armor you bring.  You have to think about it now, you can't just expect to be able to switch anywhere.

As for things I personally miss that didn't make it back, I'd have to say the Geth hoppers.  Those things were difficult to fight, and it feels like the Geth are much easier without them.

Yes, I liked the ME3 weapons mod system. It was vastly superior to ME1's mess (even though I don't really like having 10 improving versions of the same gun - that breaks suspension of disbelief somewhat). It's a crying shame that the same mechanic wasn't present for squad armour though.

Actual side quests, being able modify just about every piece of equipment, classes that were not as watered down as they are now.

You were doing good until the part about classes being watered down. I think it's only partially true. The changes made to the classes since ME1 helped differentiate them more, which is a good thing.

i completely disagree about that.

idk if you were around with the old forum when ME1 was the only mass effect game, but there was infinately more character and class discusion with ME1 then ME2 and ME3 combined.

That's actually a fair point - there was a *huge* amount of discussion as to which class to pick, which one worked with which bonus power, which could amange the best DPS or CC, etc. There wasn't really anything on that scale with the classes in ME2, as there was much less scope for fine-tuning on them. They pretty much did what they said on the tin and little else.

Geth stalkers? Yeah they were cool. Annoying to snipe but still awesome. xD

Only thing I really miss is being able to stand on a random plant and look out to the sky and the horizon on foot.

I'm not biotic fan myself (to play as biotic character, I mean), but that combo was very useful in ME1, probably it was "get out of jail free card" for some otherwise problematic situations.

Unlike many other I have no problem with similar planets and especially similar buildings. I even find it realistic and fitting: it is easy for manufacture, logistic and training. Lot of proprietary formats and standards are total PITA IRL:
- Oh, no, Greg, we cannot install this air purifyier, it it using unique powerjack and proprietary air hose links, we need Elkoss Combine jacks and Armali air hose links, but we only have Hanne-Kedar spare parts!
- No problem, we got duct tape.
- It won't work, I'm afraid, this is Rosenkov duct tape, it adhesive works only with Rosenkov surface coating.

Regarding planets - only things I miss are vegetation and bodies of water (where they could be). I'm fine with "flat grass texture", though, but I'm spoiled by OFP/ArmA. Image IPB

I got super excited when I saw all those Mako's on Earth, but know they chose to have you run for the beam instead of driving.

..hell, the last time you did that on Ilos it destroyed the Mako, so god knows why your frail body survived

 1) I don't miss this, simply because that would bring out the Mako, which I hated in ME1.  Not just the controls, the entire thing!  So I'm glad this isn't back.

2) Yeah, having guns be rocket launchers just because its fun to watch stuff blow up.

3) No, again, glad this isn't back.  We could only have a set inventory and there was no option to expand it.  You have to make sure you give everyone good equipment or else you're forced to turn everything you just picked up into omni gel, no option to go into your backpack and turn worse stuff into omni gel.  Besides, I like having customizable armor in ME2 and ME3.

I miss them too. I wish I could access my inventory at any time during gameplay like I did ME1. Sucks.

me1 we had Wrex, me2 let me down and gave us grunt, and me3 has no krogan squadmate ?!? where did the awesomeness go ? why ??

Exploring planets to find cerberus bases on the ouside, proceeding to climb a nearby mountain undetected with the mako and sniping away the unsuspecting baddies with a sniper loaded with explosive rounds. That was sooo nice and badass.

Snipers in general were kinda sweet in me1: ammo mods as you wanted them, having to aim through a moving scope when stuck with low skill level, unlimited sniper bullets, assassination skill for priority targets. Me3 sniping is nice, but has much less flavour imho....

I loved climbing mountains with the mako. Maybe I'm weird, it just felt epic.

also, the me1 geth troops as other mentionned: stalkers, snipers, armature and colossi.... why did they go away ? Krogan battle masters where also very nice, not like me3 where they are a joke

I'd take that one further and say the whole lot of weapon powers in ME1 were vastly better than anything that came since. Quite why they took out stuff like Carnage and Assassination in ME2 was never really explained, but they did expand the basic functionality of the kit.

The closest thing I can see to ME1 sniping is using the Black Widow. But then, we're stuck with trying to use ammo powers to replicate it.

Yeah, I definitely think ME2 and particularly ME3 brought a lot of great new stuff to the table... but they really missed a trick getting rid of all the ME1-era weapon modifications.

I miss being able to revisit hub worlds, like returning to Feros or Noveria and checking the shops. I miss vehicles and exploring random worlds and doing side missions that are actually side missions and don't matter to the plot (war assets bleh these aren't side missions)

I miss pinnacle station, being able to play any kind of combat mission I wanted over and over again.

Has anyone mentioned mini games? And I liked that you could just choose to bypass with omnigel if you got tired of playing them.

I miss being able to sell stuff. I feel like I have a lot of unwanted 'stuff' in my inventory in ME3 and would like to get rid of it so as not to have to weed through it to get what I want.

Yeah, Quasar was a good way of getting a few extra credits when you wanted to make a purchase before your next mission.
