Hi guys,
I'm about halfway through act 2 on nightmare. I made Hawke my tank this time around. I'm currently, obviously, built heavily in to sword+shield, defender, and about half into warmonger. I'm curious though, if battlemaster might be any better. From what I see, it looks like the debate boils down to Battle Synergy vs Bravery.
Bravery has, what looks like, an obscene threat multiplyer, while Synergy has a threat transfer, so I'm not sure how it will play out.
Warmonger or Battlemaster for tank?

Well nightmare difficulty leaves me out of the conversation but I only get Rally and Second Wind in Battlemaster. I think you need to get Vanguard. Don't all warriors get Vanguard?

Well, the best way to pick up threat generally is to just run around dealing lots of damage.
However, if you're going full tank and damage isn't an option, using threat management via abilities both on hawke's side and your companion's side will probably be necessary.
The threat management abilities on hawke's side mainly involves taunt (transfers enemy's attention from companions to you) and either the battle synergy or bravery sustain. The extra threat generation from shield defence is mainly to compensate for the reduced damage but I suppose it may help to maintain the enemies attention.
On your companions' side most of the proper threat management will come from rogues. Armistice can be used to remove threat from companions which redirects enemies to the next greatest threat; hopefully that been hawke (especially useful for those been attacked by melee enemies) and goad can be dumped onto hawke to redirected attention to hawke (especially useful when companions are getting attacked by ranged attacks).
Rogues can also remove/reduce their own threat (which is picked up rather fast due to their high dps) in a variety of ways - stealthing will drop all their threat, evade will theoretically drop the attention of the enemy attacking them, and subtlety will reduce threat generation.
Rogues, mages and warriors can all remove threat by stunning enemies (i.e. a stunned enemy will redirect its threat towards the person with the highest threat). Mind blast, miasmic flask, pommel strike, and electric-spells can all help in threat management (as well as crowd control). Unfortunately, friendly fire on nightmare will make most of these aoe stuns not so useful. It's important to note that stuns may actually redirect enemies away from hawke if hawke's threat generation isn't high enough.
In regards to the battle synergy vs bravery it boils down to whether you intend to keep close to your companions and whether you want to tank even more of your companion's damage via damage transfer.
The threat generation from bravery should help with maintaining adequate threat levels even at lower damage levels, helping to maintain the attention on hawke. Bravery is also somewhat useful getting some extra damage as it synergises well with the aoe attacks of warriors.
The threat transfer from battle synergy means that your companions will generate no threat proportionally speaking - which is pretty much all you need. Battle synergy is also good in that it gives extra damage resistance and defence to your party as well as allowing hawke to tank 25% of any damage a companion takes. The only problem is that in order for this sustain to work well you need to have the team in reasonably close proximity to each other which may not be possible in certain party configurations.
Haha got a little side-tracked and ended up spieling for longer than I intended, hope this helps.

Both are useful for a tank.
I usually pick up taunt and bravery from warmonger and second wind from battlemaster, all fully upgraded.
Battle synergy requires that the tank be close to the rest of the party, which isn't always ideal. Since I prefer one tank and three ranged members in the party, I usually skip Battle Synergy in favor of Bravery. If you like multiple melee fighters, then it might be useful to you then.
You don't need Vanguard, unless you want more offense from your tank. It couldn't hurt, though.
