Now that ME's crapped out, what the greatest sci-fi video game saga?

My vote would be for Halo. It's got the big, epic, galaxy-spanning storyline and a rich fiction that is constantly and carefully expanded and built upon. Dead Space looks promising, although it's still somewhat new and meddling by EA executives might derail it in the same way that ME was derailed.

People really seem to like Starcraft and Eve Online as well, but I've never played either of them so I don't know how they stack up.

Honestly, nothing pure sci-fi really ever grabbed my attention the way Mass Effect did.

Definitely not Halo, that's for sure. Maybe the Phantasy Star series, or perhaps Kotor.

Yeah halo's backstory is phenomenal. It's actually a lot harder sci-fi then mass effect is. It's just no one even knows it has a backstory.

Meh, I haven't found anything that can match up to most of Mass Effect, most other SF games... have a different feel.

Still Mass Effect, it didn't crap out, more like that you don't like it anymore whereas I still love it.

There´s no sci-fi game even remotely in ME´s ballpark. It even topped Star Wars for me before I saw the ending.

I argued that exact same point for years, but then Starchild and his space magic happened. From now on, every conversation about Mass Effect will have to mention the storytelling and PR disaster caused by the ending. So let me ask this another way:

What's the best video game sci-fi saga that you can gush about without tacking on a "BUT" at the end?

I really like Halo's complex story, I have to say Halo as well.

I couldn't put one in front of the other at first, but after ME3's ending..

From what I've played: Mass Effect
From what I've heard: KOTOR

Should I try to find KOTOR, even though it's outdated?

Even with ME3s ending, there is no sci-fi universe better than ME, except Star Wars.

Even though the ME3 ending is a train wreck, the game is light years ahead of any other game. It is my measuring stick when eyeballing other games. The rich, deep universe, choices, conversations, characters, I have not played a single game that could beat that. Deus Ex Human Revolution came closest, but ME is still the boss.

But hey, I have a little hope in the closure DLC, giving them a chance and want to see what they can do with it.

KOTOR. Non-ending trumps THAT ending.

I still think it's Mass Effect. No other game made you feel like you were part of this cool galactic community quite like Mass Effect. Plus the characters just feel so real.

zomg yes. KOTOR is badass.

OP: It's still Mass Effect.

Edit: Pretty sure KOTOR is on Steam? I know I have it digitally on PC, forget where I got it.

I love SO3, but Star Ocean 4 was pretty much ME3 ending-level bad except for 60 hours.

Dead Space for me. It's been my favorite since I beat the first game. It not an incredibly original story (neither is Mass Effect), but it is more than just a horror game. You can get really invested in the story and characters. At the end of Dead Space (SPOILERS) where you discover that Nicole has been dead this whole time, was pretty devastating I thought. And then just afterword, when you go to fight the hive mind, you are so fueled by revenge that you forget it's a video game. When that **** who was responsible for Nicole's death was tortured by that Hive mind I screamed at my TV in joy! Then I realized that I had to fight that thing and my joy kind of diminished... Same with two, it was a little more actiony but I thought it actually had a more impressive story since Isaac could then talk and was also dealing with things like dementia. Mass Effect and Dead Space are the only Sci Fi games I've ever thoroughly gotten into. Halo is cool but I just can't give a damn about the master chief. He has about as much personality as a brick wall and is really not that interesting. Plus the basis of the story is a rip off of the Demolition Man which is pretty inexcusable.
And I guess AC is part Sci Fi, even though the whole Sci Fi parts of those games are pretty useless and unnecessary...
