Skip the first few games and go for the books, Halo 1 and 2 have kind of dated graphics and like I said the Halo universe is truly expanded in the books.

Go and read the first 3, the second is kind of meh, but has his moments
Then start out with Halo 2 and keep reading the books :D

Also since we are mentioning obscure games:

Muv Luv: Standard ****** porn visual novel.
Muv Luv Unlimited: interesting Jav sci fi porn visual novel.
Muv Luv Alternative: **** HITS THE FAN and you are in the middle of it, heck is the ONLY game that I know besides ME that is a trilogy with choices that cross over and even has a reason to explain multiple playthroughts.

Overrall ranking.

1. Muv Luv: For doing so much with so little.
2. Halo: for great novels and having time travel without screwing the universe.
3. Mass Effect: Great lore, decent novels and a good character. (minus a lot of points for destroying the antagonist of the whole reapers).

The Antagonist are very important, Muv Luv has ****ing great ones, and so does Halo, but ME took a crap on theirs.

Still Mass Effect if end sucks that still dosn't change that fact that Mass Effect is one of the best game what i've been ever played!

But there is other very amazing sci-fi games also :)

Halo?  Dead Space?  Mass Effect?  Today's gamers, I am dissapoint :

Metroid was doing sci-fi video game saga's before it was cool.  Metroid, Metroid 2 and Super Metroid (ie Metroid 3) are a trilogy in all but name.  And they pulled off that awesome sense of immersion without about 5 paragraphs of text between the three of them...  Just goes to show how solid gameplay, great visual design and a clear theme for a game is all you need to make an epic game.  If Super Metroid alone isn't in your "Top10 Games of All Time" list, then you're doing it wrong.

Not to forget the Metroid Prime Trilogy either.  Metroid Prime 1 in particular was easily one of the top games for it's vintage (Gamecube/PS2/Xbox era).

I am Dissapoint ... you arguablly  one of the greatest gaming sci-fi characters ever as you avatar and you fail to mention her or her  games..

BLASPHEMY , HERETIC . =]

Starcraft has a great setting, story and characters but I've always felt the gameplay was a little too 'Warcraft in Space!'.  Though, perhaps somewhat ironically, I've felt it does RTS better than the Warhammer 40k games.  Plus, Metroid was doing it way earlier :hipster-glasses:

Here's another option for Sci-Fi RTS - Homeworld 1 and 2.  Now they were epic space RTS games, which certainly didn't fall into the 'Warcraft in Space!' trap.

Mass Effect has "crapped out" because of the last ten minutes and is now inferior to... Halo.

I just remembered why I told myself at some point between ME2 and ME3 that I shouldn't come here anymore.

Anyway, if we're going to play this game, I'm gonna say Killzone, if you actually read all the backstory on the website. There's some real moral/political ambiguity for you.

But really, the correct answer is still Mass Effect.

Halo, yeah. Hard science fiction as it is. You know, without space magic.

I didn't  play Halo, so i can't put it in the list. I hope the new X-com won't screw up the series

Thank you! I read the OP question and immediately thought of those two classic games. I still consider ME series to be top notch sci-fi, but Homeworld was such an engaging story with the coolest gameplay of any RTS.

If we're going to talk about multiple genres of games...

These are individual games, or a series of games, that have made a last impression on me, being a gamer and fan of science fiction, for many years now...

I've tried to narrow it down to a "top five", keep to the theme of "space/alien" science fiction, but in no particular order.

Elite (the series)

Elite
Frontier: Elite II
Frontier: First Encounters

Possibly the greatest sandbox space game series I've played. Sure, graphics basic by today's standards, but you could simply fall into the universe and shape your own story. Kept me engrossed for countless hours.

Original co-creator David Braben seemed set to launch Elite 4, but whilst work had been done developing the game over many years, last year it seemed though development had halted. Will we see a fourth game? Seems unlikely at the moment, but when asked last year if the game was still on the dtawing board, David Braben himself said last year - ""yes, it would be a tragedy for it not to be."

X (the series)

X: Beyont the Frontier
X: Tension
X2: The Threat
X3: Reunion
X3: Terran Conflict
X3: Albion Prelude

Very much the spiritual successors to the Elite series of games, with open ended sandbox gameplay, but also featuring a core plot and story lines.

X: Rebirth (also known as X4) is pencilled for release in 2012.

X-COM (the series)

X-COM: UFO Defence (USA) / UFO: Enemy Unknown (Europe)
X-COM: Terror from the Deep
X-COM: Apocalypse

First of all, I'll note that I've not listed the subsequent (Interceptor, etc) because they didn't appeal to me and took a big step away from the original games.

The first three games though, were superb. They're still amongst my favourite turn-based strategy games of all time. Very much looking forward to XCOM by 2K Games, due for release next year, hoping it catches the essence of those first three games. Early videos I've seen, suggest it will.

Wing Commander (the series)

Wing Commander
Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom
Wing Commander: Prophesy
(Armada, Privateer & Privateer 2)

Loved all the Wing Commander games, along with most of the spin-off/parrallel games, such as Armada and Privateer, along with the various expansions and add-ons.

For me, probably the first true "space opera" series, with a solid story that ran through the games and anchored the games together. I would suspect the Mass Effect series takes a good slice of inspiration from the Wing Commander series.

And finally...

Mass Effect (the series)

Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 3

The first game came to me by recommendation from a friend, not long after release, who knew my love for the genre. I wasn't disappointed.

Mass Effect 2 was a superb continuation of the series, but Mass Effect 3 fell far short of expectations. I'd still keep in amongst my personal "greatest" though, simply based on the first two games, along with the too few "great" aspects of the final game though.

Frankly, whilst the final game had some great moments, it fell far, far short of the bar that Bioware set themselves. Not enough overall content, multiplayer that didn't interest me, and a hugely dissappointing ending that just didn't seem to fit the series, or bring any cohesive conclusion.

Whilst many are waiting for the "closure" DLC or any other additional DLC they come up with, sadly for me, I don't think there's anything that can "fix" what was wrong with the game, overall. Perhaps most frustrating, was that whilst my expectations were perhaps and understandably very high for ME3, it didn't live up to those expectations, with me feeling rather mislead by what was claimed, promised or suggested by the developers, during promotion... right up to release.

Such a shame. :(

I never did play the other two.  First one was pretty good, but I hate English translations for Japanese games now.  Most of the time the dialogue sounds poor and the VA's don't put much effort into it.

Depends on which one you mean: the FPS or the reimagining of Enemy Unknown? Not even interested in the FPS. Bleh. But definitely pumped about Enemy Unknown. I pumped more hours into the original than I have any game ever. Only gripe I have with the new one is the 'one base' rule.

It'll take more than the ending to ruin Mass Effect for me. It may disappoint, but everything before it more than makes up for its shortcomings.

We are talking about space operas or sci fi in general, because even Street Fighter is sci fi...

Let's set some rules.

1. Has to involve the space in some kind.
2. Extra points for consistent lore and twist that don't break said lore.
3. Books to expand/explain the game should be good, if not then is a minus

Street Fighter  Scifi - it might be more the Wuxia then anything else or a influenced by that gerne.

But going by those then  I would Phantasy  Star 1-4 fits perfectly they only thing is that hey don't have books because that was kind before the time of tie novels.  we're talk  Sega Master System and Genisis here.

1. No. Limiting games to space operas is stupid. Most games are confined to a planetary setting. Even ME takes place not in space. We only travel through space. Having a restriction like this renders the discussion pointless.

2. Okay. That's pretty much a requirement for any story telling.

3. No. Read the title: sci-fi video game saga. The game has to stand on its own w/o the aid of expanded story coming from the books. It should be the same as movies; you can't say "x movie is better because the books explain everything so well". We are not involving books. If you are then ME drops to bottom due to "Deception".

Only canon should be established within the game(s).

------------------

That being said I would like to nominate the Independent War series. As far as I know it's the only simulator that attempts to conform to Newtonian physics.

I never played Phantasy Star. Gave me the impression it was more Fantasy then Sci-Fi. However, PSO was amazing. PSU killed anything that entire franchise, RPG or MMORPG, has to redeem in itself.

Once you play it you know from where bioware took all th eir inspiration (well mostly they just copied it)
