I hated the endings as much as anybody else, but I still think ME is the best sci fi saga on any medium.

And then go play kotor 2, but make sure u get the fan mods that add in the missing content and fix the bugs....kotor 2 really was a great game, a shame lucas arts didnt care about art and allow iit to be finished. Kreia is one of the best characters ive ever seen in a game.

I actually really prefer KOTOR 2's writing as well.  I'm super stoked that Chris Avellone is a part of the Wasteland 2 project!  Kreia is amazing.  As far as I'm concerned pretty much anything MCA touches turns to gold.

It's just unfortunate that the ending seems to be... missing :

That seems to be a recurring issue in your games. Maybe you should take that as a sign.

Even with its ending, Mass Effect's universe, characters, and attention to story still make it the number 1 sci-fi game out there. The reason the ending hurts so bad is BECAUSE it's the best. Tack ME3's ending on Halo and there wouldn't be as much backlash because Halo's story is tertiary.

After ME though, Half Life is the best, and has yet to disappoint given that it's been silent for years now. Portal 2's up there as well. Valve are 2nd to none with weaving a story into the gameplay.

In my opinion the three best sc-fi games saga are:
1.Fallout
2.Mass Effect
3.KOTOR

ME1 originally was for me the best game ever, but after decreasing RPG aspects in ME2 and facepalm at the end ME3, Mass Effect lost 1st place.

ME1 is still the greatest sci-fi game I have encountered.

To me, Kotor and Fallout and Starcraft etc were just games that happened to have a superficial sci-fi flavoring.

But that first moment in ME1, when you are looking at the star map and realizing that you can go anywhere and explore.... that captured the essence of true sci-fi, for me.

Just because the ending is bad doesn't nullify the rest of the series. From Mass Effect 1 right through to the last 5% of the third game has been a phenomenal experience. Nothing like the immersion Bioware has given its fans has been replicated in an RPG before. The characters are all finely honed, we care for them, get attached to them and empathise with them as real people. At least I have; I cried when Mordin died - the most poignant moment in the third game. I don't think many games have been able to evoke in me such compassion for its characters as ME has.

The lore is extensive, well read and conclusive. You could build entire scientific theories if Bioware ever provided some tangible mathematical theorem for mass fields. Doubtful because it's fictional but they could have gotten us to believe in its possibility. As it is there's scepticism over Einstein's energy-mass equation as to whether objects actually can travel faster than the speed of light.

All-in-all, Bioware have created games that immerse you in its world, provoke you to think about some of the greater philosophical ambiguities and just generally created a universe rich with life, culture, exploration and detail. Mass Effect remains chiefly among my top games, not just sci-fi's or RPG's but in general.

The only other sci-fi's that's ever cut it close, for me personally, are Homeworld and Halo. Halo only fell short because there wasn't much variety in Master Chief like there is available to RPG games.

I'm not downgrading a great game saga like Mass Effect because I loathe but a fraction of it.

Fallout 1 and 2. Van Buren might have been good if they'd released it before Interplay went down the drain. Fallout 3 was... meh, more or less, never got me hooked. Tactics was just horrible.
Eve-O is great if you can stand the game play, lots of intrigue and double dealing. Also lots of mentally unstable people trying to run empires, so the forums can be quite strange at times.

space: above and beyond was my all time favourite and the best example for flaming your best franchise.  it is as if these people are scared stiff of making a realistic and intelligent futuristic masterpiece. and of course as soon as they collect a reward, they seem to think they made it and loose interest in continuenty.

i also have fond memories of deep space nine.  less fond memories of psycological clap trap episodes.

I know fallout is definitely sci fi but I hate saying it's the best sci fi saga because it's not MY type of sci fi.

damnit i want my ME3 the way I wanted it. Or damnit I want someone to point me in the direction of some other space opera, or also a lover of cyberpunk, games. Preferably of the rpg variety.

Really the lack of proper use of the sci fi genre is pitiful. Most just use it to justify guns and explosions IN SPACE. or their supersoldier fantasy's (like I love crysis and think it's well executed but that's really what it amounts to and most don't even put that much thought into the stories)

Yeah halo's backstory is phenomenal. It's actually a lot harder sci-fi then mass effect is. It's just no one even knows it has a backstory.

yep to me this is an issue, I want a game where the sci fi actually comes into play, not just as an added backstory for the few who care.

Not many sci fi games have gripped me the way ME has. The closest games that come to mind is either fallout or the starcraft series but even then it's no where close Image IPB

Actually there is: Portal 1 & 2!Image IPB

I bet Rockstar will fill the void at some point.

yeah I was actually thinking this. And I think they could do it well. They put so so so much research into making their games both realistic and authentic representations of the stories they present I imagine it would take years for them to make a sci game up to their standard, if they ever even made one.

It does come in to play. All the technology and new scientific theories they talk about. But it's military sci-fi, so technobabble isn't the focus, killing big aliens with big guts is. You want to play a game where technology is the focus? Maybe someone will come out with Engineering: 2516 one day for you.

Sci-Fi saga? I'm not sure about a saga really, but I do know of a few individual games that are fun to play. Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force was a great game for it's time, although I heard the sequel wasn't as good. I think its one of the better Sci-Fi games that I've played for its time. What else...Star Trek: Armada wasn't too bad I suppose, it was like Command & Conquer but in Star Trek form.

I did try to play KoToR a few years ago, but never finished it.

Can I toss in the pre-cursor and say Wing Commander series?

Kotor is Star Wars and thats still very much active so that would get the number one slot possibily but the downside of SW' universe is that its pretty set in stone, Fallout series...hmmm...is that Sci-Fi though, I love Fallout but I am hard pressed to label it Sci-Fi, personally.

Mass Effect verse is still extremely interesting and open to a myriad of future options in terms of gaming, at the moment its the most promising and least constrained if you think about it.
