Should I try to find KOTOR, even though it's outdated?

Yes!

yes, in fact the fact it's outdated is good, because it means it can run on nearly any computer/laptop. I downloaded it recently to my school computer with some crappy graphics card and it runs perfectly.

The only downside is as soon as you turn it on you better not have anything else planned for that day cause next thing you know it will be 10 hours later and you haven't eaten or relieved yourself.

What is this problem people have with Fallout being sci-fi? It's as sci-fi as they come.

I can't wait til dark millennium comes out. The mass effect universe is so tiny. Barely any worlds are populated, and the ones that are have tiny populations. The warhammer 40k universe really gives you a feeling of how large the galaxy is. A trillion people just died? Must be fall, the common cold is passing through.

Agreed, if you're the type of person who values gameplay and story over graphics it's well worth a look.

and even the graphics, I think, are great if you're usually console gamer, my only complaint is I'm not a fan of the combat mechanism (that and I'm not a pc gamer so the controls in general are awkward for me)

Really if I didn't think it would be locked I'd make a, stop what you're doing and go play KOTOR, thread right now.

Tried it last fall. I couldn't get past the outdated gameplay and Carth. Sorry Kaidan...

Carth got kicked out of my team as soon as I became a Jedi.

are we just talking about series or including even one shot games? Cause Chrono trigger and FFVII would make my list if the latter.

[space: above and beyond was my all time favourite and the best example for flaming your best franchise.  it is as if these people are scared stiff of making a realistic and intelligent futuristic masterpiece. and of course as soon as they collect a reward, they seem to think they made it and loose interest in continuenty.

i also have fond memories of deep space nine.  less fond memories of psycological clap trap episodes.

Aaah finally someone else remembered. SAAB wasn't exactly 100 percent realistic but it had some damn good episodes and not least it was badass. :)

DS9: Hmm definately my favorite series of that franchise but offcourse with a gazillion episodes not all can be good.

There are a lot of Scifi games with interesting background stories, but none of them are actual "Space Operas" (which Mass Effect clearly is). Space Opera is almost dead genre if you ask me. I loved Mass Effect for the same reasons I loved the old Babylon 5 TV serie, but nowadays there is no substitute for Mass Effect in gaming world nor in TV.

Here's the thing though, do you think 343 Studios is going to screw over the Halo fan base ? (in Halo 4,5,6) ? I current don't have a problem going back & playing Halo 1-3, ODST, Reach or H:A.

But I do have "feel" like I have a serious problem about ME, be it 1, 2 or 3. Bungie never made me feel piracy was viable alternative to demo'ing a final product (since pre-order DLC, day one DLC & exclusive location DLC are the norm for EA/Bioware games now).

Time will tell, but I think (atm anyway) Halo is seen more favorably over time than ME is.

You know, it's funny. I was a huge fan of the TV series LOST, and had a few thousand posts on the LOST forum. Everyone was coming up with tons of end-game theories and explanations, and discussions about the excellent character development, etc. But, when the actual series finale happened and many people were disappointed with the simplicity of the ending, people started posting stuff in the EXACT same way that they are posting about ME3 now.

In others words, all of the sudden, LOST was the single worst entity on planet earth, and the posts on that forum immediately did a 180 degree turn from "the best series ever" to "okay, we now know that LOST was the worst thing ever invented in the history of time, so what other backhanded ways can we think of to bash it".

So obviously, to answer the OP, my answer is ME is still better than any other Sci-Fi video game series, despite the ending.

My vote would be for Halo. It's got the big, epic, galaxy-spanning storyline and a rich fiction that is constantly and carefully expanded and built upon. Dead Space looks promising, although it's still somewhat new and meddling by EA executives might derail it in the same way that ME was derailed.

People really seem to like Starcraft and Eve Online as well, but I've never played either of them so I don't know how they stack up.

EVE-O back story is grim dark and epic.  In game not so much, it's a sand box MMO supposed to be driven by players, not by devs, so (apart from Incursions) story events are rare.  But being a Catholo-facist space slaver is..well actually thats the largest NPC empire.

343 was created from the best and brightest of the Halo fanbase. If they can't do right by me, there is no more hope for games in general.

because in modern "culture", ESPECIALLY in america, sci-fi is pretty much seen as meaning space/aliens/future. Speculative Fiction rarely enters the conversation, ESPECIALLY in the academia setting.

Free Space & Free Space 2.  Freespace 2 is considered to be the finest example of a now pretty much dead genre - space combat sims.  But it was very intuative to play, and was pretty epic with huuuuge capital ships duking it out as waves of bombers and fighters darted between them.  It was also a master piece in both story telling and setting up atmosphere.  Free Space still has one of the best cinematics on painting a "We're boned" introduction to the series, and introduces the main bad guys - The Shivains - in a way that makes the Reapers look like amatures. No, really.  The Shivians would show the Repears a thing or two about how to wipe our civilisations.

Anyone play Freespace 2 and remember the savage joy of watching the Colossus take out the Shivan Juggurnaut, and there's the savage joy of having taken out the Shivans capital ship, only to have the carpet ripped out from under you when it turns out there's hundreds of them?  That was followed by the realisation at just how unbeatable the Shivians were.  There was no 'crucible' super weapon, only the desperate attempt to collapse the Capella jump portal which resulted in most of the good guys fleet being wiped out, including the loss of the Colossus.  Hell, I remember watching in muteted horror as she went down fighting, because Interplay did such a damned good job in building up how the Colossus your best hope against the Shivians, and she felt like it.

I dunno, I still consider Mass Effect to be that.

Halo kinda fell apart after first game... Maybe Gears of War?... But that's... dunno if I'd call it sci-fi. Didn't care for Half-life and... what else there is?

Yeah, gonna go with Mass Effect!
