Now that ME's crapped out, what the greatest sci-fi video game saga?

The Mass Effect series is everything that I wished the Halo series could be. Complex characters, a great squad, great dialogue, and some heart-warming moments. However, if you also included fantasy than I would have to argue that Planescape Torment beats everything in spades. Yes it is only one game but no other game has that atmosphere like it.

From what I've played: Mass Effect
From what I've heard: KOTOR

Should I try to find KOTOR, even though it's outdated?

I know I'm 16 pages late, but when I saw this I had to answer with a resounding "Yes".  It's fantastic; one of BioWare's greatest works.

Anyway, I've never been a big fan of Halo.  Sure it was fun, and the first game gives me fond memories, but it never caught my attention like Mass Effect.  Current ending not withstanding, ME is one of the greatest bits of sci-fi story out there.

But my personal favorite?  Like, ever?  Hm...

Deus Ex might be nay-say around here now (endings), but that.  It's not really a saga, per se (never played the sequels), but I loved the dark, Asimov-esque story.  Human Revolution was really good, too.

But then again, I wouldn't want to live there, y'know?  I wouldn't mind living in the Mass Effect universe.  Without the whole Reaper destruction and post-war clean-up, mind you...

My vote would be for Halo. It's got the big, epic, galaxy-spanning storyline and a rich fiction that is constantly and carefully expanded and built upon. Dead Space looks promising, although it's still somewhat new and meddling by EA executives might derail it in the same way that ME was derailed.

People really seem to like Starcraft and Eve Online as well, but I've never played either of them so I don't know how they stack up.

EVEs world is player made is player made, its lore is just white noise.  Though if we let the Goonswarm be the evil Empire....

Am I allowed to still say Mass Effect?

I love Halo but... c'mon. I know the ending kinda ruins it but you can't just disregard the rest of the ME universe.

It's hardly a 'saga' but the System Shock games hold a special place for me.
Also the Fallout series (1, 2, Tactics, 3 and of course, New Vegas).

I also really liked the Lost Planet games.

Uh, maybe the Mass Effect series? No other series has ever had me as emotionally engaged in the characters and technology and planets. The endings won't dislodge Mass Effect as the best sic-fi series I've ever played or watched or read.

And then go play kotor 2, but make sure u get the fan mods that add in the missing content and fix the bugs....kotor 2 really was a great game, a shame lucas arts didnt care about art and allow iit to be finished. Kreia is one of the best characters ive ever seen in a game.

I actually really prefer KOTOR 2's writing as well.  I'm super stoked that Chris Avellone is a part of the Wasteland 2 project!  Kreia is amazing.  As far as I'm concerned pretty much anything MCA touches turns to gold.

It's just unfortunate that the ending seems to be... missing :

I hereby ORDER you to download the Restauration mod wich repairs everything in the game, frome the sh*tload of bugs to the story points (HK factory, crew on Malacor, Little robot vs G0T0, Visas vs Handmaiden or Atton vs Mical, etc) You'll then realise how great this game is!

Just to be clear I still think the game is great, even without the Restoration Mod :)

Mass Effect was just great until the last 5 minutes. I'm still hoping the EC will at least fix some of the stuff and make it somehow work because right now the ending doesn't work.

Aside from this: Fallout 3 and NV (I didn't get the first two because well, I guess I can get them now from Bethesda free.)

I did play the original Starcraft. The new Starcraft would bring my quad core to its knees so that's out.

Halo? I played all but Halo 2. Good series. Reach IMO had the best balanced multiplayer I've played.
