From what I've played: Mass Effect
From what I've heard: KOTOR
Should I try to find KOTOR, even though it's outdated?
Yes!
Agreed, if you're the type of person who values gameplay and story over graphics it's well worth a look.
Resident Evil 4 is my favorite game of all time, so I may fit the bill

Mass Effect is still the greatest. I just have to hold my hands to my ears, make my own ending, and pretend this debacle never took place
Theres no place like ME2, theres no place like ME2, theres no place like ME2.

For all sci-fi, Fallout is my undisputed king with ME taking this misstep.
For ME's subgenre of sci-fi, Sins of a Solar Empire is my personal favorite, though Freespace (edit: and Warhammer 40k) get pretty close.

Resident Evil 4 is my favorite game of all time, so I may fit the bill. Followed closely by StarFox. As long as it has cool characters I'm in.
It has incredible characters. One of them tells mesmerizing war stories that I just listened to slack-jawed. And of course after playing KOTOR you can join in on all the "meatbag" references!
Also, Bastila is still the best LI in any Bioware game. Yeah I said it.

Oh no you didn't!
I have a hard time getting over any of the LI's in BGII (even Anomen, as long as you're evil).

On second thought, scratch that. WH40k is fantasy in space, not sci-fi.

KOTOR 2, for being partially rushed, did have significant parts that were more mature and better than KOTOR. Personally both have rusted to me.

Both are actually pretty much the same for me, both captivated me in a good way, story, the novels, the comics, I love them.Holoe4 wrote...
I really like Halo's complex story, I have to say Halo as well.
I couldn't put one in front of the other at first, but after ME3's ending..
Halo 4 might change that(and the extended cut for ME3), but we'll see.

Yeah warhammer 40k godly, but i don't want to call it sci-fi. It's a thing all its own. It's GRIMDARK!
Also, I'm still pumped for dark millenium, even though it's no longer an mmo. It's still gonna be rpglike

I see what your saying and I don't completely disagree. But for me, with Fallout anyway (I'm not big on fantasy), it's the immersion. I have never been as immersed in a video game as I was on my first playthrough of Fallout 3.jsadalia wrote...
I have to say that Fallout, like the Elder Scrolls games, really kind of trails off into tedium for me after the initial burst of fun wandering around and killing things. The narrative force is too diffuse and characterizations are too weak: never really cared much about anyone in the games, or about what happened.

My vote would be for Halo. It's got the big, epic, galaxy-spanning storyline and a rich fiction that is constantly and carefully expanded and built upon. Dead Space looks promising, although it's still somewhat new and meddling by EA executives might derail it in the same way that ME was derailed.
People really seem to like Starcraft and Eve Online as well, but I've never played either of them so I don't know how they stack up.
Interesting sig, you know what else has EA in it? GrEAtest!

i played kotor for the first time last month (march) , bought it over steam (any where else is massivly overpriced)
i will say that the game really does hold up, it very good, although it does not offer the closure i would like. but you will be satisfied with the experience.

Shin Megami Tensei Persona - best RPG series ever (even though it's technically a JRPG). Persona 3 and 4 are definitely 2 of my favorite games of all time. Although it's kinda in between alot of different genres since it's part science fiction, part fantasy, part mythology, part everyday life. It's strange...but it works beautifully. Oh and they end with REAL ARTISTIC INTEGRITY as well. Usually it's a bittersweet ending but the narrative is done so well that there isn't filled with plotholes galore.
Persona 3 has one of the most well-done bittersweet endings ever if you have the FES version and can play The Answer. I actually found the game's answer to "What's the meaning of life?" to be quite touching, and it fits perfectly with the themes of the game as a whole.
