My vote would be for Halo. It's got the big, epic, galaxy-spanning storyline and a rich fiction that is constantly and carefully expanded and built upon. Dead Space looks promising, although it's still somewhat new and meddling by EA executives might derail it in the same way that ME was derailed.
People really seem to like Starcraft and Eve Online as well, but I've never played either of them so I don't know how they stack up.
Interesting sig, you know what else has EA in it? GrEAtest!
Hoh boy, here we go.
Now that ME's crapped out, what the greatest sci-fi video game saga?

As far as other series that can compete? Halo is actually pretty good, especially the early games. I think it gets a bad rap for being a pretty simple shooter with an obnoxious online crowd, but the single-player storyline is strong.
I'll also throw in the Marathon and Starsiege games for old-times' sake. Still some of my favorite storylines in all of gaming.

Space sci- fi: Mass Effect, followed by the X series.
I bought the X Superbox on Steam a week ago, and the more I learn about the X universe, the more I'm seeing where some of Mass Effect's lore might have came from. Watch the intro to X: Beyond the Frontier, and you'll understand:
It's not exact, but throughout the series, there are some similar ideas, like:
-Sentient ships who try to wipe out all life in the galaxy
-Jump gates (rather than mass relays)
-The destruction of Earth's jump gate, leaving humans stranded in our system
-Some humans get stranded on the other side of the gate
-Different races working together to eliminate the Xenon (Terraformers)/Reapers
ME still has deeper lore, and it has many differences from X, but I can't help but wonder if the ME team got inspiration from X?

Pity Reach bombed, though. Hopefully 343 can deliver with Halo 4.

Yeah, X is one of my major candidates. Interesting backplot [I got the physical superbox, it comes with a booklet that basicall eplains the lore of the three games, linking everything together properly. Don't know if you got a digital copy of that or not, but its an interesting read], alright story in game and free gameplay mechanics. The first X is... slow to start. God damn Siezewell is a bore to get through, but after that it picks up [And after you get the time dialation device]. I'm looking forward to the new X game coming out this year.TRSniper4 wrote...

Halo has a fantastic backstory. The books and other media have expanded the universe massively over the years.

Knights Of The Old Republic 1 AND 2. The second game has a less epic overall story, but greater character development and a personnel quest. In my own opinion, KOTOR 2 has the best writing even seen in a Video Game.
Advent Rising. A good old forgotten Si-Fi game. Mixed opinions on that one.
Halo. Of course, the novels are great. The best game itself is the 2nd. Fantastic universe. Would recommend picking up any of the novels aside from the one written by Willam C.Dietz.
Starcraft. Well done and quite fun to play really. Fantastic 2nd Trilogy.
Half Life. Of course, Half Life 2 has quite a fantastic setting, but it isn't much of Si-Fi. More post apocalypse.

Shin Megami Tensei Persona - best RPG series ever (even though it's technically a JRPG). Persona 3 and 4 are definitely 2 of my favorite games of all time. Although it's kinda in between alot of different genres since it's part science fiction, part fantasy, part mythology, part everyday life. It's strange...but it works beautifully. Oh and they end with REAL ARTISTIC INTEGRITY as well. Usually it's a bittersweet ending but the narrative is done so well that there isn't filled with plotholes galore.
Persona 3 has one of the most well-done bittersweet endings ever if you have the FES version and can play The Answer. I actually found the game's answer to "What's the meaning of life?" to be quite touching, and it fits perfectly with the themes of the game as a whole.
And the BEST part...you NEVER hear Atlus claiming "artistic integrity" garbage with it...because they don't need to. The ending is quite sad but yet there's closure. It makes SENSE. That's the difference between Atlus and Bioware, it seems. Atlus makes COMPLETE games with endings that actually makes sense whereas Bioware releases incomplete games AND charges you for Day 1 DLC!

Also Halo is still well below ME series, despite ME 3s ending. As is Star Wars, despite Kotors success, I just cant take it seriously after Lucas crapped all over it with the prequels, no matter who writes it.

Heh, well to be fair, most of the closure you don't get until The Answer, which we didn't get until they re-released the game as Persona 3 FES (albeit for a discount).

I actually thought "The Answer" wasn't really a necessity to be honest. The ending to the original, IMHO, was fine as it is.

I guess the fallouts are a strong contender for me then as long as you disregard the crappy spinoffs and number three.
Outcast was pretty damn epic in its day too.

Halo? Seriously? Since this topic should really have something to do with ME, I'll start by saying that Halo has not matched the thought provoking interactive game play of even ME1 and I was a Halo junkie for a while. Matter of fact, Halo can't even stand up against Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.
Yes the ending was dull and far from stellar but the story alone was what makes the game what it is.Dead Space 1 and 2 were great games but the genres are completely different. Dead Space wasn't epic story telling, it was all about survival in that sci-fi setting. Right now, the last sci-fi game that I'm waiting for, if done right would blow Halo out the water. Aliens: Colonial Marines and notice how said "if done right."
The only thing I can somewhat agree with you is what I placed in bold from your post. I feel that if this continues then we are on track for another "crash" of 1983. It's time, for all these deadlines and pressure to end. How can a company be truly creative if they are forced to work under these constraints? It's still no excuse for the ending but still.
